MediEvil Review - IGN

MediEvil successfully brings Daniel Fortesque’s tale back from the dead yet again, but not nearly enough was done to modernize the mechanics of this remake.

-Foxtrot2029d ago

"but not nearly enough was done to modernize the mechanics of this remake"

YET...games such as Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Battlefield, most fighting games, Lego games, Pokemon etc which get sequel after sequel, copying most of the previous games mechanics, usually get a free pass. Even something like Destiny 2 which was one sequel, didn't improve on much yet again some people like IGN didn't seem to mind.

It's not really about the score of a game, the franchise, the developer behind it or the console it's on, it's just the double standard for some

septemberindecember2029d ago

@Foxtrot

Those games get incremental updates with each release though. Comparing any of those games to the first release that came out many years ago will show that there are a lot of modern mechanics implemented which help improve the game.

That being said, I wouldn't expect a bunch of new mechanics being added to this game because it's aim isn't to change the original in any significant way aside from graphics. But something like a checkpoint system would have been nice.

darthv722029d ago

I've just seen a few more lower scores (2/5 = 4/10) and I'm thinking that maybe these reviewers were expecting this to be all 3 games on one disc in the vein of the Crash trilogy. I mean sure, it would have been great to get the 3 games in one but that wasnt what they were going for. I enjoyed the demo and it did what it set out to do. Bring the fun of the original but make it look better thanks to modern technology.

septemberindecember2029d ago

@darth

Are there even three MediEvil games to remake though? I thought there was just two, the PS1 original and then the PSP one that is basically just the original one revamped.

Razmiran2029d ago

There are 2 ps1 games
No idea about the psp one

Neonridr2029d ago

don't take so much offense to a score. If it's a 9/10 to you, then that's all that matters. People get so worked up sometimes.

This isn't a sequel of a game that came out last year though, so I wouldn't use those as examples. Imagine if Resident Evil 2 just gave us what the original was, tank controls and all without modernizing. That game would have played horribly.

KeenBean3452029d ago

Agreed, this just seems inline with the reception that the original games got at launch back on the PS1, as reviews seem to mention clunky controls.

Still going to pick it up as I enjoyed it on the PS1 but I cant help but feel some people over hyped this to be some big exclusive. It's just a graphical upgrade to a good game from the PS1 days, nothing like RE2, Zelda: Link's Awakening, etc which modernised the game for audiences today.

IamTylerDurden12029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

RE2 isn't a remaster or just a technical remake, it's a reimagining of the original. It's essentially a new a game based on the original.

MediEvil PS4 and RE2 are very different animals. MediEvil is a technical remake, but essentially a remaster. RE2 is a complete remake and reimagining.

That's why MediEvil was priced at $29.99, which ultimately is fair. RE2 is a $60 game, which is also fair. They are different types of games, different categories, yet they are being scored on the same plane.

It's as if critics don't understand what they are playing. MediEvil is a faithful, nostalgic remaster/remake released around Halloween. This is a $30 game for fans of the original. It's not being positioned as a major exclusive. It's just a fun offering and a chance to bring Sir Daniel back. RE2 was a major, AAA release via Capcom.

Neonridr2029d ago

@IamTylerDurden1 - that still doesn't mean it couldn't improve on the original. Resident Evil 2 could have gone for some faithful reproduction and gave us tank controls. Link's Awakening could have restricted us control wise like the Game Boy version was. But both were updated to more modern control schemes. Just because one is cheaper doesn't mean they couldn't at least update some systems that only existed because they were limitations at the time of the original.

IamTylerDurden12029d ago

Or it could be better, Daily Star gave it a 10/10.

The game is a 70 Open Critic.

Kribwalker2028d ago

@tylerdurden

some reviewers really didn’t like it
https://n4g.com/news/230297...

only 39% would even recommend it on open critic. I was thinking about picking it up in a month or two when it’s cheap, but maybe it’ll pop up on psnow in the near future and i can give it a go there instead now.

Kribwalker2028d ago

@Tyler Durden

The daily star gave it a 10/10?

The daily start also gave Days gone a 10/10

It also gave crackdown 3 a glowing review
“Crackdown 3 Review: A non-stop joyride of destruction that’s been well worth the wait”

They seem to love a lot of games

Kornholic2029d ago

What a poor comparison. Those are modern games that have created the standards MediEvil is being judged against. Call of Duty doesn't have to modernize the mechanics because:
a) it's not a remake
b) the mechanics are already modern

RpgSama2029d ago

"but not nearly enough was done to modernize the mechanics of this remake"

Did the Crash Remakes "modernized their mechanics"?

I think the whole idea was to release the SAME game with updated graphics, this is not a sequel.

Edgelordsupreme2029d ago

I don't like Crash, but Crash always played better than Medievil.

Tear1112029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

If this game was from nintendo it would take 8 out of 10 at least

2029d ago
SIANSLOW2029d ago

Because it would be better

gravedigger2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

Well, for me, i love when this remake remained faithful to its clunky controls and bad camera like in original 20 years ago,

2029d ago
JokerBoy4222029d ago

Its IGN... I mean, this is how assbackwards they've always been.

FernDiggidy2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

"Most fighting games..."

FOH! Don't include fighting games along those other filthy titles. HOW DARE YOU!

Amen to everything else tho.

Xb1ps42029d ago

Oh man.... I was so looking forward to this game, I’ll still get it but I’m a bit discouraged..

No save point sucks, I want this game for nostalgic reasons so just wanted to run through the game not really have to constantly start over if I die..

gravedigger2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

MediEvil is exactly what it needs to be. A solid remake of a classic original PlayStation platformer. It wasn't amazing then nor is it great now, but it's something the fans have been waiting for and Sony delivered.

execution172029d ago

Pokemon Sword and Shield will probably get 8-9's across the board even though it just looks like a remaster of a 3DS game that doesn't even look like they even tried to take a leap to console gaming

Chumdiddy2029d ago

I don't think that's the point.

They're saying that it still feels a lot like a PS1 game. Remakes tend to update controls to some degree.

N1GHT_W0LF_X2029d ago

If the basis of your remake was already a 9/10 then not modernizing any game mechanics doesn't hurt it because the game was already good to start with.

MediEvil has always been a 6/10 game at best so they desperately needed to change something in the remake to modernize it but they failed to do so.

I remember completely hating MediEvil back in the day because it felt unpolished compared to Crash or Spyro and it seems like they've done nothing to improve any of the clunky gameplay mechanics.

Kribwalker2028d ago

It’s pretty much the average score of Metacritic (67/100)

I really don’t think it’s a conspiracy, it’s a mediocre game in most reviewers eyes, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. I had a tonne of fun playing crackdown 3, and it rated a few points less then this one.
Just enjoy it and don’t worry what the reviewers say

windblowsagain2028d ago

Because those games are not broken to begin with.

Sorry but BF,AC,COD Get updates all the time and are pretty easy to control as games go.

Medievil just felt poor from the demo i played. Framepacing was bad, framerate was all over the place, camera felt weird.

The whole control scheme and camera needed updating.

Whats with IGN with 6.5 score on PS4 exclusives this year... days gone 6.5 and medievil 6.5

-Foxtrot2029d ago

To put it into perspective Mario Kart Tour got 6.7

Basically saying both are worse then a dumbed down mobile game that holds your hand and is filled with MTs.

septemberindecember2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

It's a value proposition though, and Mario Kart Tour is basically riskless yet it's still a disappointing 6.7.

I'm sure if Days Gone and/or MediEvil were free games they'd be scoring much higher because of the value.

Nintentional2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

I have to give it to you on this one, Foxtrot. This is literally the first time I have agreed with you on anything 👏🏼 I’m marking this day on my calendar lol

Sm00thNinja2029d ago

Lol Days Gone deserved a 6.5.. a 7 at BEST. Not sure about this Medievil game though other sites seem to disagree

Daver2029d ago

Days gone is the best game I have played this year. For me it deserves more than that. To each their own I guess

Sm00thNinja2029d ago

Definitely. Theres things to like about Days Gone... I just found out .... blank person was still... blank and found... blank... at a camp. It's just so repetitive...to each his own maybe I'll change my tune by the end

UhOh2029d ago

Yeah it is way too tedious. Babysitting a bike that has the gas tank of a rc car after riding past other motorcycles obviously to pad out the game so you can't beat it so fast.Back and forth across the map cuz deacon can't grow some balls and tell those camps he is not putting his life on the line for so low pay(or how about trust for pete sake) or not to call unless there is more than one job in one area instead of the more generic plot quest with infestations and ambush camps. Or at least do better at explaining it away. It's awesome how this game will make some things very realistic compared to others like deer hunting but, deacon being an army vet can't carry quad mags much less drums. Or how about not even one extra lol. But, they want you to face deer that run into hordes and do missions with mini missions on the way to the actual mission. Funny enough you can upgrade the storage on the bike. Unlike another PS exclusive you here me criticizing in my comment history, days gone actually has fun moments and non repetitive mission objectives but, those are canceled out by the repetitive and tedious babysitting in the game between the bike and the camps and travel between camps. Also he cant put a crosshair on another persons head that is 20 ft away and charging within 3 seconds. Look, I am an army vet and this is nonsensical. Just look at some other modern games, even third person shooters and how fast they can put a muzzle in you face. It is just funny the things they made realistic and the things that are not. Anything that helps you is basically fake seems to be the rule they go buy. It's like this game is made by people who learn everything from Sons of Anarchy but they took the realistic stuff out like precision shooting. You have to play like rambo or contra just to get him to do super basic stuff. He definitely was no infantry man and that's for sure.

Sm00thNinja2029d ago

What I dont understand from this.. is how Nintendo could remaster Zelda OOT tomorrow and it would get a 10 on Switch with NO MENTION OF updating game mechanics

RpgSama2029d ago

1000% Agree!!

"but not nearly enough was done to modernize the mechanics of this remake"

Did the Crash Remakes "modernized their mechanics"?

I think the whole idea was to release the SAME game with updated graphics, this is not a sequel.

Dannycr2029d ago

@SSm00thNinja
It's very easy. There are games who simply dont age well. Plenty of early 3D games during the PS/Saturn era didn't age well. MediEvil was never an amazing game. It was a 6-7 game at most and those mechanics are quite archaic.

Ocarina Of Time did age decently enough for it to retain it's core mechanics (although, OoT3D did have some improvements, like the better made Water Temple). Same with A Link To The Past. There's simply games who age better than others.

If you think this is a matter of just giving Nintendo a pass (which I'm hardcore against giving Nintendo a free pass for all the shit they pull off) it's not. I bet you the Shadow Of The Colossus remake was super praised for all its updates.

Sm00thNinja2029d ago

@Dannycr hmmm I can agree with you on several aspects but OOT was not without its flaws and while the mechanics were solid back then I'm not sure how well they'd hold up against BOTW. I know its unpopular opinion here but I loved BOTW

Vegamyster2029d ago

That's a very silly comparison, this game or series was not critically acclaimed to begin with while OoT defined a genre, of course it would receive more praise because it's aged better just like certain other old games that have been remastered.

Sm00thNinja2028d ago

@Vegamyster look up your history the original Medievil for PS1 was a highly praised cult classic.

Vegamyster2027d ago

The games average was a 80 on Gameranking based on 16 reviews, Ocarina of Time came out a month later had was a 97.5 on 28 reviews.

Days gone to me was a solid 8 or higher. I really enjoyed that game from beginning to end. We have to remember that at the end of the day it’s just one person’s opinion for a review. Read the review to see why they gave it that score. Sometimes people have biases and it comes out in their review

Sm00thNinja2029d ago

Very true! To each his own. There are things I like about Days Gone. Again, my opinion could change by games end. As for Medievil, reviews seem to be pretty mixed at this point so again... different reviewers

Blank2029d ago

It’s IGN bro whether you rely on them or not I will only say that who cares how big they are? They are more on the publisher side over the consumer.

Crash was a carbon copy of its original? As is this so what's the problem ign?

Edgelordsupreme2029d ago

Crash played better from the start, same with Spyro.

Razmiran2029d ago

The gameplay in crash aged better

porkChop2029d ago

Clunky controls will always be clunky. Crash and Spyro had good controls for the time, which allowed them to age better. When MediEvil released it had clunky controls even for the time. I guess IGN was hoping for some quality of life changes/updates.

GaboonViper2029d ago

Playstation has been utter trash this year.

Ricegum2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

Yet they're still having a better year than their competitors.

franwex2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

Hmm. It actually has compared to other companies, surprisingly. At least it’s not been to the standard that we are used to. Death stranding may be their best game this year-but it looks like it won’t be for everyone.

Next year looks really good though!

GaboonViper2029d ago

YES exactly, i love PS, hell on twitter im called a pony but this year has been poor, Days Gone, Laydens departure, PSNow being ram downed our throats, meanwhile MS has put out Gears 5, Outer Worlds and early next year Ori 2, i hope Sony have something special planned next year as this year has been a dissapointment for me.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

AnubisG2029d ago

So tell me, how os Xbox doing this year? Oh that's right.....

Edgelordsupreme2029d ago

This is going to blow your mind, but you can look at one companies output independently from their competitor. You can be critical of Sony and Microsoft, just because Microsoft has also done pretty poorly doesn't change Sony's output this year. They're competing for my money, I enjoy video games I'd like to give them my money but neither of them has given me much of a reason this year.

Oh right, I forgot we are on N4G and anything critical of one company means it's an endorsement for the other. How could I forget!

KickSpinFilter2029d ago (Edited 2029d ago )

Xbox has been what exactly this year or even all gen?

KwietStorm_BLM2029d ago

You can't do that around here, Gaboon. Fall in line or else.

Father__Merrin2029d ago

ps4 has had tons of games this year i think your getting your format of choice mixed up

PixelOmen1057d ago

Gravity Rush 2 is probably the most underrated game on PS4.

DarXyde1056d ago

Agreed. And it was definitely top 5 on the platform for me. Genuinely loved how charming the series is/was.I loved it so much that I Platinumed it twice (Gravity Rush 2 and its Japanese variant, Gravity Daze 2).
Such a lovely series. I say this once every 3 or so months, but Sony committed the gravest sin in my eyes by dismantling my favorite Sony studio, Japan Studio and I really had a hard time forgiving that.
