Every PlayStation Controller Ever, And What It Means For PS5

With the PlayStation 5 coming next year, let’s takea look back at every controller in PlayStation history to see what could be next with the PS5.

PS1 controller- Playing Ridge Racer and Tekken. Even with the dual analog controller before the dual shock. Still have the controller.

DS 1- playing GT and Ape Escape and feeling the rumble and having many options catching monkeys

DS2- playing GT, DMC and GOW and feeling the rumble, killing stylishly with Dante and doing QTEs with Kratos

DS3- playing Folklore with the motion sensor and killing with Nariko and Kai in Heavenly Sword. Loved that crazy Kai. They should be unlockable characters in GOW or HZD. Maybe the next installments. Hint hint.

DS4- playing HZD as Alloy and Spider-Man. Felt so good in the underated Macross/Robotech like game Galak-Z

Can't wait to control and feel with DS5. More innovation. But most importantly, **MORE FUN.** And VR is just going to be even more awesome.

YES FOLKLORE was one of those amazing gems on PS3 I wish I still had. The motion control in that game was perfect imo

I think that game really showed what motion controls could do. It's a shame that the game went so under the radar. It was so original and impressive for it's time.

dualshock is the best controller ever made indeed, in every generation;
from what i readed, dualshock 5 will be marvelous too

I have all my PS controllers but the only DS controller I ever liked is DS4. Everything else felt small and my hand cramped playing on them. One area I feel Xbox was better than Sony at is the controller feel. Nintendo has been up and down but the Pro feels great. This is the first-gen where I liked all 3 controllers. I hope that continues next-gen.

I kinda wish they would use the style of one of the officially licensed PS4 controllers, the Hori Onyx. It was pretty comfortable to hold and use. It just didn't have a headphone jack, speaker, or light bar so it couldn't work with some games. I'm sure Sony could find a way to add them and keep the same design though.

Am I the only one that would like a Boomerang style controller from the original PS3 concept?! If it released as a limited run special edition I'd be all over it haha.

Such a shame so many bitched about it, I remember watching a vid about how it was supposed to be more comfortable and sit more natural in your hand, will try and find it.

I'm glad someone agrees. The ergonomics of the controller looked so smooth, the only thing was that the face buttons looked a bit off / wonky but that was a prototype and with some tweaking I think it would have made a great controller.

I honestly was disappointed when the change happened, from what I remember of the video, the way the pad sat in the hands made the face buttons easier to press, along with the shoulder buttons, I think the main issue would have been the PSP like nubs instead of the sticks, and there would have been no rumble at all due to the size and shape of the handles, but like you say, issues easy enough to sort before launch, maybe one day we will get an anniversary edition or something lol.

Hard to say because we never got to actually try it.

People complained because it was a way to mock Sony, but all accounts said it was a pretty good design to actually use.

Yeah I remember that well, such a shame, but the ds4 was good and the ds5 seems like a whole upgrades worth of controller so theres that lol

I just hope they just evolve the current design with improved triggers, thumpsticks and make it just a bit bigger. Just don't change the stick positions or anything like that.

Even though they’re handhelds the PSP & Vita should’ve been on this list since they were important to the evolution of gaming controllers

PSP was the first system to have a home button, of which has since become standard on every controller & handheld going forward

Vita introduced the touchpad that was later utilized by the DualShock 4. Another thing to note for Vita is that it was the first handheld with dual analog sticks that was later adopted by New 3DS & Switch

I was hoping the PS5 would advance controller design/input and move away from virtually using mostly two thumbs to do 80% of the work. We have 10 digits on our hands, two arms, two legs, and its nearly 2020, and we still using two thumbs supplemented by two fingers.

I think the Dual Shock is going to have the similar PS4 base controller that is familiar to player but the only difference is that it is going to be USB4 type-C instead of USB 2.0 currently available on PS4 consoles.
