Mario Kart Tour Review - IGN

Nintendo is still struggling with how to make a great mobile game, but Mario Kart Tour’s racing is solid.

-Foxtrot2049d ago

Jeez. Literally hand holding, full of MTs and so dumbed down yet still a 6?

Really?

They gave Days Gone 6.5 / 10

Jin_Sakai2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

I played the game and put my phone on the table and didn’t steer a single time only used power ups and won the race.

Can’t forget the amazing season pass you can get for $5.99/month. Can’t stand mobile gaming, Switch being an exception.

Days Gone deserved an 8/10. This game deserves a 5/10 at best.

-Foxtrot2049d ago

That’s that Nintendo magic for you when it comes to reviews

EddieNX 2049d ago

Switch is a portable console with amazing games. Phone games are the gaming equivalent of poo.

LucasRuinedChildhood2049d ago

Everyone knows that I disliked Days Gone but it definitely deserved a better score than this sorry excuse for a game.

UltraNova2049d ago

Handholding at its best.

xxShadow-Shockxx2049d ago

What's up with the hate on Days Gone? Im towards the end of the game and its been a great experience.

Servbot412049d ago

I'd say Days Gone doesn't deserve a better score than 6.7, but that this deserves something around 2. This has almost no redeeming features other than it looks alright and is playable, at least Days Gone was a complete game.

nommers2049d ago

IGN loves Nintendo no matter what.

King_Noctis2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

If that is the truth then this game would have gotten a 9 or a 10.

I'm just sick of hearing people say this love this or that love that when reviewers give good score (or in this case, bad score) to games that said people don't like.

UltraNova2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

King,

They know its bad, they know we know its bad, they know most of the other reviewers will give it a bad score so the gave it the best possible score they could within the "safe zone".

Why is it so hard to understand?

2049d ago
Imalwaysright2049d ago

The real question is why are you comparing the review standards of a console game vs a mobile game?

-Foxtrot2049d ago

Reviews are reviews man

They are still games

If I was comparing a game to the iPhone 11 pro review then you’d have a point

Point is how can you say a shitty mobile game is better then a decent console game

Imalwaysright2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

Yes and context is context man. Context is the reason why you can give a 10/10 to a mobile game's graphics despite PCs/consoles existing. Context is the reason why you can give a 9/10 to a mobile game's gameplay despite games like Vanquish or Bloodborne existing. Days Gone was reviewed with console gaming standards in mind, this game wasn't or does anyone expect a mobile game to rival games like GoW or The Witcher 3? Anyone that does please reply to me. Come on don't be shy.

BTW, the person that reviewed this game didn't say that it was better than Days Gone.

UltraNova2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

Well lets see their objectivity when Death Stranding, a game like no other afaik, comes out shall we?

Edit
As long as they do not create and publish clear scoring guidelines for different types of platforms/genres then a general score scale will be vague and all context lost or rather compared inaccurately unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Imalwaysright2049d ago

UltraNova

Objectivity? There is no such thing in reviews and there'll never be. Reviews exist only because someone played a game. That's enough to guarantee that every single review will have personal bias.

" scoring guidelines"

No need for that because everyone knows that mobile gaming doesn't have the same standards as console gaming.

2pacalypsenow2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

@Imalwaysright

People compare Switch games to Xbox one and Ps4 games, the Switch is basically a tablet.

UltraNova2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

Imalwaysright

That's what I'm saying, objectivity is out of the question. So any score for any game is up to debate.

Without rules anything "can" be compared to anything.

Imalwaysright2049d ago

2pacalypsenow

Yes, well that's because Nintendo's biggest games have AAA budgets https://www.forbes.com/site...

Imalwaysright2049d ago

@ UltraNova

But the standards stem from objectivity. A budget that a game like Days Gone had is not the same as the one this game had. The hardware that is running them isn't the same either. Context matters.

2pacalypsenow2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

@Imalwaysright

So if a mobile game has a AAA budget then it can be compared?

What if a game on Xbox one is an Indy with a low budget and a game on the iPhone has a AAA budget, can you compare them now? Can you not compare Ori to GTA 5 because one cost more than the other?

Because that makes no sense, a game is a game, its fun or it's not, some of the best games this generation have had low budgets.

Imalwaysright2049d ago

Yes, I would say that Cuphead, Blasphemous and Ori are great games but those games aren't the norm, they're the exception and they were developed with dedicated controller/keyboard (hardware) in mind wich means that mechanically they are far deeper than a game that is played by swiping the screen such as this one. When reviewing this game the context of how it's controlled needs to be taken in account. Again, the standards from console gaming vs mobile gaming stem from objectivity.

They gave Days Gone a 6.5 and this a 6?

Maybe if Days gone had Mario in the title, it would have gotten the reviews it deserved.

Sm00thNinja2049d ago

Let's not get it twisted Days Gone was pretty trash. This is getting a slight pass because it's still Mario Kart??? I played this game for 5 min before I was like absolutely not

xxShadow-Shockxx2049d ago

How is Days Gone Trash? Im generally curious cause im in the middle of the game now and don't have many issues with it, ive been enjoying it a lot.

2pacalypsenow2049d ago

Trash?

The only reason it was given average reviews was because it didn't provide anything new, which it wasn't trying to. Something a lot of games do and are called "groundbreaking", some reviewer even criticized it because it was too "white" lol.

If Days Gone was trash then Ubisoft games that all follow the same formula over and over and over should be "trash" and be given low review scores.

Nintendo can release the same Mario Kart over and over and people will still piss themselves when it releases and reviewers will give it 9's and 10's because of the name.

Sm00thNinja2049d ago

I absolutely struggled just to make it to a halfway point in Days Gone the characters are SOOO UNINTERESTING I found it hard to care about anything in its world. To each his own maybe trash is a heavy word.... it just didnt live up to the standard I've come to expect from big Playstation exclusives

P_Bomb2047d ago (Edited 2047d ago )

You’re not halfway though. Not even close. Haven’t beat a horde yet. There’s two more big maps below you with more regions. Things start to pick up once you get to Lost Lake. 1st map was too decompressed and had the worst ally camps.

It’s more a back loaded game than front loaded. Once you open the fast travels and detox the danger zones it becomes less grindy. Characters aren’t Judgment quality, but the survival sandbox is on par with scrounging in State of Decay and Dying Light imo. Stalking out camps with stealth and spot/mark. Divide and conquer on the bigger hordes. Ain’t that bad.

Sm00thNinja2047d ago

@P Bomb maybe I'll pick it back up and give it another shot today

P_Bomb2047d ago (Edited 2047d ago )

I hear ya though. Maxing trusts is a time sink and the story doesn’t really start until Boozer heals up, which happens after grinding the meh Tucker/Copeland combo. Arguably too long with the number of chores that accumulate, but I’d definitely clear as much of the map as you can handle. The Nero outposts in particular.

It’s the AC/FC formula. If you chip away at the map every so often in between other games, maybe by the time you get into the military storyline with better fuel consumption/material storage limits and weapons, you’ll hit a stride and start sandboxing through more unscripted scrums. Luring a horde to take out an enemy camp, or just taking in a rainstorm or blizzard. If not, hey at least you tried lol!

Sm00thNinja2047d ago

@P_Bomb I'm giving it a shot the hero story line is boring but I'm interested to learn what happened to Sarah although that little bit of storytelling damn near mirrored The Last of Us. The environments are stunning though it's just the characters are so damn dull... I'll chip away like you said theres some parts to love in here I think

ShadowWolf7122049d ago

No.

They gave this a higher score of 6.7.

KeenBean3452049d ago

In what universe is this a 6.7? It plays shit, riddled with MT's and has no challenge at all.

How does Mario kart double dash barely get higher than this??

Applejack2049d ago

Double Dash is still my favorite Mario Kart right next to 64. Saying this game is anywhere near that is insulting.

SegaSaturn6692049d ago

People sure like giving Nintendo a pass. They make some great stuff, but like Squaresoft, Enix, they produce a lot of trash nowadays too.

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot694d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr693d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt694d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky692d ago (Edited 692d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long692d ago (Edited 692d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.

Nintendo Hit with Class Action Over ‘Spotlight Pipe’ Loot Boxes in Mario Kart Tour

Nintendo’s former use of “Spotlight Pipes” in Mario Kart Tour is the subject of a proposed class action that alleges the company has deceptively induced players—especially minors—into paying real money to essentially gamble on winning in-game items.
