Borderlands 3 is the Result of Gearbox Understanding its Fanbase

AB for SG: "We see it time after time in the gaming industry. A new IP will gain an audience, grow a large, dedicated following, and generate substantial revenue for a developer. Over time, the need for change takes over the design methodology and a few titles later, the fans are left with a product far removed from the one they fell in love with. Many of us often ask how this continues to happen. The good news for Borderlands fans then, is that Borderlands 3 may very well be the greatest example yet of a developer truly knowing what its fans want."

As a huge fan of BL2, I can't wait to try it. Approved!

Leeroyw2109d ago

If you like borderlands you'll love this. I reckon it's great.

Sono4212109d ago

Borderlands 3 is EXCELLENT! Except Ava... god why did she become such a main character? She is literally the worst and they are trying to make her into the new Lilith, it's just idiotic. Other than that it's great though.

gangsta_red2109d ago

You'll love it, I'm seriously enjoying this game so far.

JokerBoy4222109d ago

It's great, BUT its different than past Borderlands games.

JokerBoy4222109d ago

@Brave_Losers_Unite I meant tone wise as well as mechanically. It feels a little too inspired by current looter shooters than learning from what they got right and wrong with their own games.

Christopher2109d ago

I'm not seeing that, Joker. It feels like some quality of life changes, new weapon concepts so it's spiced up a bit, more flexible skill trees, and even more focus on challenges post-game.

rainslacker2109d ago (Edited 2109d ago )

2 was different than 1. The Pre-Sequel was different than BL2. Playing BL1 after playing BL2 and TPS makes it feel almost archaic in design.

So long as it maintains the same feel, and builds on what came before, then that's what a sequel should be. It doesn't have to reinvent the wheel with a sequel....which is what this article is talking about.

You say it feels different, but didn't BL2 feel different than BL1? BL1, you didn't have this large cast of characters who you were connected to to make you feel like you were building on a story. BL2 had all those vault hunters as integral to the main story, even though their story wasn't explored nearly as much. BL2 made them an integral part of the story going on. I don't know if BL3 builds on the vault hunters from 2....still haven't gotten around to it since I'm trying to get the plat in BL2....it's addictive. But, I know there are connections to the other games, like they connected BL2 to BL1.

gammaray132107d ago

i agree and it is also way too short

Kingthrash3602109d ago

There are some issues with it....it didn't do much to upgrade from bl 2...but if you are a fan you'll like it

CooliSushi2109d ago

It's not a huge step up, but the changes made make it difficult to go back to bl2. You'll love it

ilikestuff2109d ago

Im enjoying but it’s not exactly realistic.

Larrysweet2109d ago

Wtf joking right realistic?

ABizzel12108d ago

I feel it's a good Borderlands, and as a fan of the other 3 games, I like it. That being said it's definitely not the level of improvement that we should expect in 2019, it feels like the Borderlands game we all wanted back in 2014.

FantasticBoss2109d ago

I've yet to get my hands on it myself, but I'm getting the impression that this game is a bit stuck in it's ways in a way that some people may love, but for others is a bummer. Not quite sure if it was quite a home run. I still look forward to playing it eventually.

Christopher2109d ago

If I wanted different, I'd play Rage, Far Cry, Halo, Gears, or the plethora of other shooters out there.

porkChop2109d ago

Nah man. It feels like a proper evolution of the BL formula. The game is a bigger jump/improvement than BL2 was from BL1. It builds on everything that was great about BL, while also bringing in a lot of new ideas.

FantasticBoss2107d ago

I'm always torn on how much "different" I want in a games' sequel. I don't always want a completely different experience, but if it's too close to what came before it then I have a "been there, done that" problem on my hands. I want games to iterate on themselves to become better, and it sounds like this one may have been in the oven a little too long for what they changed to really be enough for me. Not to mention it looks like the writing doubled down a bit hard on the poop jokes and what have you in a way I'm just not into. By all means, enjoy the game if you love it, but this one kind of fell from a day one to a "eventually" purchase for me and my gaming buddies.

Arty842109d ago

nope i liked bl1 and bl2 i didnt want what i keep hearing is bl 2.5 and sure it aint paying full new release price for it

3-4-52108d ago

BL2 is more like BL1.5, than BL3 is BL2.5 If that makes sense.

This feels every bit as much of a true sequel as BL2 did when it released....and in some ways even more.

Media is more sensationalist now so they want to start controversy for the clicks....which seems to have worked considering how many of you took the bait.

1nsomniac2109d ago

Understand the facts. Gearbox have always been lazy. We know this already. Spin it anyway you like it doesn’t change that.

neutralgamer19922109d ago

Exactly ever since success of 2 it took them 8 years to make BL2.5

EDKICK2109d ago (Edited 2109d ago )

They also had an extended DLC schedule for Borderlands 2 all of which were fantastic, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep the last large expansion was mid 2013 and they continued releasing smaller dlc til early 2014.

Also even though it ended up bombing they did release Battleborn in 2016. And then they released the Fight for Sanctuary, Borderlands 2 dlc leading into 3 for free. So to act like they did nothing for 8 years isn't really factual, regardless of your feelings on Borderlands 3.

Ricegum2109d ago

Have you even played Borderlands 3? If you had, you certainly wouldn't be calling them lazy. Fantastic effort went into the game, and a tonne of content.

FPS_D3TH2108d ago

There’s so much content in borderlands 3 that this comment really just boils down to uninformed ignorance.

SlagWolf2109d ago

Been hearing mixed things about the game from people I know who played it. Just more of the same which might be great if that’s what you want but heard the story and humor was way more miss then hit.

The game graphically doesn’t look like that big a jump and considering how long it’s been between BL2 and BL3 that’s disappointing. I’ll catch it on a sale with all the DLC later. I have other friends who are sitting in the same boat as me

toxic-inferno2109d ago

The jump in graphics is significant - it may not match up to other modern games in this way, but much like Breath of the Wild, the art style hides the imperfections. For the first time in the series, i find myself actually looking at what my guns look like.

Anyway, I can't argue with you - waiting for the full edition is an amazing deal for this series of games.

EDKICK2109d ago

The jump in graphics is one of those games that while playing it doesn't seem that big a jump but when you go back to Borderlands 2, especially if you go back to the 360 original version but even the remaster, you suddenly realize it's a larger upgrade than you thought.

Damn, the Fallout tactic but reversed..

Inverno321d ago

I am glad the movie is bombin, can we stop making horrible adaptations now?

ChronoJoe321d ago

There have been some good adaptations recently though. I think the Gran Turismo movie is really good and The Last of Us and Fallout TV shows are great too.

If they're going to try, some of them are going to fall short. That's just inevitable. If anything we should encourage more effort so that they learn more about what makes some of these work, while others don't. Honestly I think Borderlands should have been a hit, but I think it would have been much better as an animated show akin to the League of Legends TV show on Netflix.

Inverno320d ago

Yea but the good to bad ratio still leans more to the bad. All the ones you pointed out have been pretty great, can't wait for season 2 of all those shows. With that said, you can't "fall short" unless it's on purpose, in this case it's Borderlands. These characters, the world, the lore is/are fleshed out, there's a ton of source material, there are 7 games!

Kosic321d ago (Edited 321d ago )

But BL3 is the worst one in the series....should do #2 and experience Handsome Jack

Michiel1989321d ago

there was no actor handsome enough available to play Jack

DustMan321d ago

Nah. Tiny TIna's Wonderland is the worst in my opinion. I enjoyed 3 more than the "pre-sequel" and Tiny Tina's Wonderland.

Dudeson321d ago

Agreed, at least 3 felt like borderlands, gameplay was great, bosses were interesting. Wonderlands was just a turn in the wrong direction, the idea seemed great, but playing through the game just didn't feel like borderlands to me. Also dlc scam.

porkChop321d ago (Edited 321d ago )

My issue with TTW is that it's supposedly a new IP in the Borderlands universe, not just a Borderlands game. Yet it plays and feels just like Borderlands with some magic tacked on. For every cool new idea there's a handful of ideas just rehashed from Borderlands. They really didn't do enough to make it feel like its own thing. It's still just an FPS with guns, except the guns are magical now. Why not focus instead on crazy melee weapons, bows, and magic/spells instead?

Lighter9321d ago

I'd say the pre-sequel because of the low gravity. That was horrible.

porkChop321d ago

In terms of gameplay BL3 is the strongest in the series. It's the narrative that really lets that game down.

ChronoJoe321d ago

Eh...

The story is definitely worse but there's more to these games than that. Gameplay, loot, endgame and build variety is definitely better in 3. I think they did a great job with the game, some of the DLC is fantastic too.

Kosic321d ago

I agree with people are saying. There's sole really good ideas in the games followed by some odd choices. I loved Bl2 , and I liked the presequel because it tries to explain Handsome Jack's downfall (YouTube game theory handsome jack).

Also PreSeq, has this really cool team play where talents could help pick your friends up from bleeding out. Athena throwing her shield if it bounces of a player they are picked up from dying. Head shots Aith the sniper chick etc.

BL3, I cannot get past the annoying social media influences, it's meant to be funny, it's just unbearable. Gameplay feels solid though. But I've not made it past lvl 20 ish on 3 tries. The story does not interest me, the classes are poor and talents feel bland.

gold_drake321d ago

i didnt like 3s sotry villains, like at all.

but i dont think any of the borderlands mainline games were "bad". i nejoyed all of them

but im not part of the community and play them mostly with my friends or alone.

there are worse games rly.

Like they said...a bad publicity is still a publicity

jznrpg321d ago

I totally forgot there was a movie coming out. I’m not a big fan of adaptations mainly because most of them suck and they take away from me playing video games. I didn’t get into Borderlands 3 game. 1 was my favorite 2 was pretty good but a third with more of the same didn’t interest me much to begin with.
