There Are Officially Too Many Games To Keep Up With

Let me paint a picture for you: you’ve just bought the latest video game that you’ve been waiting years to come out. You get home and start playing it, and you put around 10-15 hours into it. Then there’s another video game coming out soon after that you’ve also been waiting years for, and you buy that. The problem is you haven’t beaten the game you just previously bought and are now starting up a new game. Sound familiar to you? If not, lucky you. However if you’re like me, you’re finding you’re failing to beat a game before jumping straight into another one. It occurred to me though that it’s not just that as adults we don’t have that much free time anymore, but that there’s just way too many games to keep track of now.

That plus the fact that games are so massive know, most are a chore to get though.

VenomUK2095d ago (Edited 2095d ago )

You're not meant to play everything.

There are too many games that are too long and now subscription services with all-you-can-eat buffet of games further compounds the issues. You're not meant to play everything. Once you understand that a zen-like peace allows you to move forward and focus on the titles you really want to play.

But... it's nearly Christmas and there's so much good stuff coming out! And then spring with FF7 Remake, Watch Dogs Legion, Cyberpunk 2077, the Last of Us 2 and more and that's before the summer releases and then the launch of the next-generation consoles next Autumn. It's too much. They're too much. Cannot compute. Cannot. MUST PLAY THEM ALL.

Who is making it official 😂

Tross2095d ago

@VenomUK That's a good point. It's probably worth noting that it has never occurred to me to try and read every book ever written or even to try to watch every movie ever made. So...maybe it shouldn't be all that surprising that there are too many games for one person to play in a lifetime too.

Tapani2094d ago

I made a decision that I will not buy any single new game until I finish at least 7 games from my backlog of 15 (or play each more than 50 hours and be done with them if they take longer and are mundane.) There will always be a new Black Friday, spring or summer sale or whatever around the corner...

FallenAngel19842096d ago

That’s been the case for decades. Not everyone has the time and money to enjoy nearly every game that comes out. Even when they do find the time even fewer manage to complete all of them

Kran2096d ago

As the article states, it wasn't as much of an issue back in the 70's and 80's. Things only started to get crowded post 90's.

FallenAngel19842096d ago

Even during the 80s & 90s not everybody played every single game that released

Kran2096d ago

Because, and again I mention it in the article (did... You read it at all?), back then they relied on word of mouth as there wasn't really any mass marketing, so players simply didn't always know about a new game. When they did, you bet they snapped it up.

@justthefacts okay?

I mean I didn't write my comment out so pompously, that's how you chose to unfortunately read the comment it seems. All I'm saying is had he read the article, his comments wouldn't have been needed as I literally explained it in the article......

FallenAngel19842095d ago

I read the article. I’m saying that even when people are of a game’s existence that they like they’re not always going to be able to play it. A store near them may not stock the game, it may be too expensive, or some other issue happened. There are various factors that prevent a consumer from enjoying literally everything that they’re interested in.

This pretty much goes for nearly every entertainment medium.

in the 80's and 90's most games could be completed in a few hours but games were still expensive. now imo games are more available with services and digital sales but most take much longer so time is now the problem for me.
I've actually just about got on top of my backlog, the only games I haven't played which I still want to are bloodborne and spiderman.
blasphemous looks really good so I will probably try that as soon as I've finished gears 5 which I'm really enjoying.

traumadisaster2095d ago (Edited 2095d ago )

I would lose the term officially and now in the title as this has been the case unofficially fore years. Also what board certified official for you? Kind of weird misuse of the word.

Can’t even bother to do the that site with such a poor title. Since this has been the case I would choose a title that reflects the length of this issue.

I started on pong so I’ve seen a thing or two...

Edit: tried to read the article, the first few paragraphs were so terrible I had to stop.

Thanks for (half) reading I guess?

It can be at times but not really at the same time, at least for me. I'm kinda picky with games, I don't touch anything with required online (unless its strictly an MMO or PVP game) or anything with SP microtransactions, so that alone really slims my radar down. Then about once or twice a month in a day off I take about an hour and look up upcoming game releases and add ones I want to a list and then ad them to wish lists on their respective storefronts. When I get paid I begin preorder payments on the ones coming within the next 3 months by breaking up even payments of (total cost ÷ # of paychecks till release) pretty easy to manage but can lose track sometimes
