Gears 5 breaks records as biggest launch for any Xbox Game Studios game this generation

Thanks to the incredible support from our fans, Gears 5 kicked off the Holiday season strong – attracting over three million players in its opening weekend and setting new records for Xbox Game Pass with the biggest launch week of any Xbox Game Studios title this generation. The performance easily doubled the first week’s debut of Gears of War 4 and made Gears 5 the most-played Xbox Game Studios title in its first week since 2012’s Halo 4.

"Gears 5 breaks records as biggest launch for any Xbox Game Studios game this generation.....attracting over three million players in its opening weekend and setting new records for Xbox Game Pass"

As always MS trying to find the very specific combination of words and data that works the most for their narrative, talk about post moving, now it's about how many people played the game at an entry-level fee of a 2$ Gamepass subscriptions or free trial.

AngelicIceDiamond35d ago

Its not goal posting if they have an additional service that the game is performing well on. Its not like Nintendo or Sony have such services at the moment.

roadkillers35d ago

...and Sony doesn't do this? I think Gamepass is great for gaming and it isnt laggy like the streaming platforms. I have no idea how well Stadia is going to play, but if our PSNow subscription is any indication it will be pretty poor.

My personal hope is that Microsoft leaves the console business and puts their games on platforms like Nintendo and Sony through gamepass.

RpgSama35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

@Roadkillers

"...and Sony doesn't do this?"

No, Sony puts real sale numbers for their console and their games out, not hours played, bullets shot or buildings destroyed like MS.

mandingo35d ago

Relax my guy. You can’t even let Xbox have this even though it’s a great game?

Zeref35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

As always ponies trying to spin this into something negative.

No matter how you look at it. 3 million people played the game over the weekend. 3 million gamers that enjoyed the game. That is a win.

I'm gonna assume about 2 million of those got it on gamepass. That's 2 million people that will now potentially stay subscribed to Gamepass in the future thanks to Gears 5.

King_Noctis35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

“As always MS trying to find the very specific combination of words and data that works the most for their narrative“

Tell me, what company in existence has never done this before?

rainslacker35d ago

Gears of War 3 sold 3 million in it's first week. It wasn't a MSGS back then.

There are some modifiers to make their claim, but 3 million players in its first weekend seems like a valid way to measure it, since MS isn't so concerned with sales anymore.

rdgneoz335d ago

MS has moved the goal many times this gen. Last gen they talked about console and game sales. Now it's users (including free ones) and people playing the game over free trials or game pass. If you can't win, move the goal post...

Godmars29035d ago (Edited 35d ago )

@Roadkillers:
Sony doesn't offer their AAA level games, any launch day titles, day-one through a subscription service.

@Zeref:
Its that assumptions have to be made that's at issue.

Agreed. This is the best MS game I've played this gen. Playing it on a souped up PC and only paying $2 to play it is icing on the cake.

Mr Pumblechook35d ago

@OldGuyStillGaming “So far for me it’s been pretty good.”

Damning with faint praise.

OldGuyStillGaming35d ago

Well I have been having more fun on Crackdown 3 than G5 and all thanks to the $2 Gamepass

NarutoFox35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Just like the first gears trilogy that started way back in 2006 with great review scores. Congrats to coalition.

2pacalypsenow35d ago

Not really.

Gears 5 is not even close to Gears 1.

The impact Gears of War made was legendary, and made people want to buy an Xbox, me included.

KickSpinFilter35d ago

Try reading the article header again...

343_Guilty_Spark35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

If I remember You hated the original Gears of War during the last generation so don't come on here with the BS. You just hate Xbox PERIODT

2pacalypsenow35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

@343_Guilty_Spark

Please quote me when I have said I hated Gears of War 1?

The original trilogy was good. you can look up my gamertag (Thuglife67889) and see I have played every single one, I was actually playing the original on on xbox 360 over the weekend, if I hated it so much, I wouldn't have.

@KickSpinFilter

I'm replying to the comment not the article, since Game Pass wasn't around when the 360 was, comparing Gears Of War 5 to the original trilogy is laughable.

Z50135d ago

Totally agreed. Gears 1 made people want a 360. Gears 5, not so much.

mandingo35d ago

Well duh. Gears 1 was groundbreaking new and fresh. This the 6th entry if you include judgement. It’s not the same appeal obviously but gameplay wise it’s better than ever.

King_Noctis35d ago

Gears 5 could have scored 100% and it wouldn’t still be enough for some of you with agenda here.

Obscure_Observer34d ago

"I'm replying to the comment not the article, since Game Pass wasn't around when the 360 was, comparing Gears Of War 5 to the original trilogy is laughable."

No, it´s not! Specially in this day and age when ENGAGEMENT is becoming more and more important. No when Gears 5 beat the crap out of games like Fortinite. No when Sony will make PS Now reborn as PLAYSTATION STREAMING! No when Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Google are joining the fray. There´s imminet GAMING ENGAGEMENT WAR comming and some people are just too stupid to realize that this upcomming global war for your TIME already begun!

2pacalypsenow34d ago

@Obscure_Observer

Who cares about "engagement", I'm talking about the quality of the game, you're too busy worrying about Twitch streams and how people many stream the game, or mention it on Twitter. I'm talking about how good the game is to play.

And the rest of your comment, I don't even know what you're on, so I'm just gonna ignore it

The thing everyone is missing is the fact that the 3 million players was including the Ultimate Edition versions (gamepass ultimate or retail ultimate versions) and didn’t even include the launch of the base version on gamepass or retail which is crazy and shows the gamepass model can be successful
“First week performance includes the four-day early access period beginning Friday, September 6, which was exclusive to Gears 5 Ultimate Edition and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members. ”

NarutoFox35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Everyone knows about that

lxeasy35d ago

Thats awesome and an incredible feat. Congrats Coalition and Microsoft, this is well deserved, the game is stellar.

Godmars29035d ago

Questioners are going to question.

And the heart of the issue is that is that user logins for a subscription service are not the same thing as fully priced retail sale numbers.

Obscure_Observer34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

@Godmars290

"And the heart of the issue is that is that user logins for a subscription service are not the same thing as fully priced retail sale numbers."

Issue? Where´s exactly the FULLY PRICED retail sales numbers provided by Sony for GT Sport???

Where´s exactly the FULLY PRICED retail sales numbers provided by Sony for Days Gone???

That´s right, NOWHERE!

Bring us the OFFICIAL source or GTFO!

Godmars29034d ago

@Obscure_Observer:
Show where, or who, has held up GT Sport as reason to buy a PS4 much less subscribe to PSNow.

Likewise, Days Gone may have been an under-delivering wet fart, but it was both a wet fart that had to be bought outright and was something many in the PS camp will admit under-delivered at the very least.

Again, such is an issue with MS specifically because they only have the likes of Gears and Forza, day-one releases to promote Game Pass. Seem to be confusing use numbers with sales numbers in service of a subscription service.

Brave_Losers_Unite35d ago

Especially since they are almost giving the game out for free

King_Noctis35d ago

For new Gamepass subscribers you mean. Its not like one month lasts forever.

RizBiz35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

@King_Noctis Even if it's the only game each player plays this month, that's only $5 per person. I'm sure the game cost more than $15 million to develop.
I really don't understand Xbox's strategy here. It's like they're going out of their way to lose money. The XBox division reminds me of Sony's mobile division, just let it die already.

RedDevils35d ago

Except sony make quality phone.

Godmars29035d ago

@RizBiz:
"Say a lie enough times and it becomes the truth."

Think MS's strategy is to report high use numbers so as to bring in users. That they don't really have much to offer said brought in users through reported high user counts, aside from a couple of multiplayer titles versus a diverse library, is besides the point.

They could send you a free copy made of 24 carat gold and you would still find a reason to complain

Since when is the beginning of September the holiday season?

rockwhynot35d ago

Labor day holiday doesn't mark the beginning of any new season but solid guess.

2pacalypsenow34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Just Microsoft being Microsoft and changing things to benefit the report their shareholders see.
