In an era defined by exclusivity, Microsoft is opening up to 3rd party platforms.

I mean its on PC, does that really make it "3rd party"?

Sciurus_vulgaris33d ago

The game is published by MS, and developed by an Xbox studio. Gears 5 is a first party game.

Nitrowolf233d ago

yeah but it was already releasing PC via windows store. The difference is here storefront

UltraNova33d ago

Tomato tomato...same platform as before the PC, no difference here.

Unspoken32d ago

Microsoft doing the right thing and making games available to more users.

Sony on the other hand...

Silly gameAr32d ago

@Unspoken

You people are incredible. Any move MS makes, is the best move and where the industry should be heading in your opinions. I never thought I'd see a day where people are actually trying to villainize a company for making products, to make their own products worth buying, lmao.

DaDrunkenJester32d ago

@Unspoken
@Silly gameAr

Didn't we just get an article saying that Sony is looking to put some of their games on additional platforms? I think the industry is moving forward in a different way and closed off platforms are sort of going bye bye. We are seeing more platforms, we are seeing streaming going to multiple devices, we are seeing more and more crossplay... Yes I still think a platform needs games that define them, but the old ways of completely closed off ecosystems is slowly going away.

RememberThe35732d ago

@Da
He was talking about their multiplayer games. But until we actually get real announcements, let's slow our roll a little.

usually MS 1st party games release on the Windows Store only and people gripe and complain. Then they make good and release it on Steam and people try to make other deflections.. can't please everyone clearly. The term 3rd party here is referring to the platform on PC.

GottaBjimmyb32d ago

Frankly, The wider the availability, the better the games will do. Not a bad idea since games will be available for sale on Xbox, Xbox windows app and Maybe steam this pairs well with games being included on Game Pass. basically, they get the upfront subsidization, (via subscriptions) and post launch sales, which really gives them a much more stable development budget, though we have yet to see if more stable means larger revenue, more investment into games, or better games for that matter.

I will say, I think Game Pass would be better if it removed 3rd party games (or at least non-indie ones) and just put the full budget into bi-monthly first party releases. However, that would be assuming they have the dev power to support frequent AND quality releases, which clearly has not been the case so far anyway. 90% of first party releases on Game Pass have been average at best.

Rude-ro33d ago

It’s steam... which is offered on more than Windows.

NarutoFox32d ago

I guess I'll be playing this on PC. Hopefully it's good

Nu32d ago

Steam will hopefully make the Gears series a little more mainstream and increase the fan base.

Silly gameAr32d ago

@Unspoken

Yes, but if you think they're going to put the big exclusives like God of War, Last of Us, ect. on another platform, then I doubt that will happen. MP friendly games, or games that might benefit more on more platforms, like free to play games, MP only games, or 2nd and 3rd party games that are more synonymous with PlayStation, I can see as more of a possibility.

People talk crap about Microsoft, but if you don't have an Xbox, you can play the games on PC. The competition would never release games on PC

Sciurus_vulgaris33d ago

Actually, Sony has been conservatively allowing some of their games to release on PC. Beyond Two Souls, Detroit Become Human and Journey are Sony owned but got recent PC ports.

ElementX33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I meant first party games.

darthv7233d ago

those aren't really "Sony's" games, those are QD's games

Sciurus_vulgaris33d ago

@darrhv72 the games I mentioned are owned by Sony.

MasterCornholio32d ago

Wasn't there an article where Sony have them permission to release those games on PC?

DigitalDaniel32d ago

Uh no they are not Sony games.
QD made them and had an exclusive deal with Sony. Kinda like it was with the PS4 Spider-Man game, Sony didn't own them at the time. They just acquired them now, but at the time they were contractors for Sony.

That's because Microsoft is still releasing all their games on their own platform.

Windows is owned by Microsoft.

They're not putting Gears 5 on a Mac.

Neonridr33d ago

but it's not like they are getting all the revenue when someone purchases it off the Windows store vs Steam. They are selling games at a loss there. But they are trying to appeal to the larger userbase.

bishup2533d ago (Edited 33d ago )

@ darthv72
Sony allowed the quantic dream collection to the epic games store.
https://www.dsogaming.com/n...
sony still owns the rights to those IPs.

Elda33d ago

It's appearing on Steam a platform MS doesn't own though it's a PC platform.

Inzo33d ago

Its available on Steam, doesnt that mean you can play on a MAC?

2pacalypsenow33d ago

@Inzo

Not necessarily, it has to be optimized for MacOs.

Steam has its own category for Mac games.

@ElementX

"The competition would never release games on PC"

Never?

Brace yourself!

“We must support the PlayStation platform -- that is nonnegotiable,” Layden said. “That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”

https://www.bloomberg.com/n...

ElementX33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

From the same article...

"particularly multiplayer titles designed to be played on personal computers -- may see broader distribution."

I don't you'd see any single player games from Nintendo or Sony on PC

Obscure_Observer33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

@ElementX

"I don't you'd see any single player games from Nintendo or Sony on PC"

First you said that competition would never release games on PC. Now you´re talking about single player only games, moving the goalposts i see. Not really hard to tell that this news took you by surprise.

Uncharted, TLOU and Killzone for example are single player and multiplayer games as much as Halo, Gears and Forza.

You can play that denial game all you want. The fact that Sony may focus just on multiplayer games and/or multiplayer-only games to be multiplatform, doesn´t change the fact that first party games from Sony are comming to PC, putting Sony on a position closer to Microsoft rather than Nintendo. FACT!

I been telling people that Yoshida is the new CEO and he has a FINANCIAL background! CHANGES are to be expected!

Embrace change! Evolve or die!

ElementX33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I should've been more specific in my original post. Nintendo and Sony will probably never release their big franchises on PC. I guess I have to lay out every single detail of my thoughts or somebody will pick them apart. Uncharted, Mario, Zelda, God of War, etc are the games I had in mind, not multiplayer games or minor IPs. I meant the games you think of when you hear Sony or Nintendo.

Inzo33d ago

He also said MPs and they can afford to do so if they wish but one thing you wont see on PC is a Sony first party exclusive.

Obscure_Observer32d ago

@Inzo

Dude, can you read?

“That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of *MY* collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”

Translation: SONY´S FIRST PARTY GAMES

And if the games were any good, I'd be praising them, because it would mean I wouldn't have to buy another console. That's not the case though, unfortunately. At least they're acknowledging that no one wants to use their rubbish windows store

Varodor33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I don’t think that they have a choice, otherwise the game not only makes no profit but the development will not pay off.

Ciporta198032d ago

Well their games hardly sell well on the x1 si they don't really have a choice.

Well it’s inevitable that MS is going down the path of a becoming a third party developer. The question that looms is when are they’re going to make the official announcement?

Zeref32d ago

So is Sony, so I guess Ms has the right idea

FGHFGHFGH32d ago

I think they'll do it similar to windows phone and just let it happen over time. They can still collect money from xbox live. It's kinda sad but funny that Xbox console users have become "2nd class citizens"

ArchangelMike33d ago

So... when's it coming to PS4?

Srhalo33d ago

Halo on PlayStation... sooner than you think.

Obscure_Observer33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

@Srhalo

"Halo on PlayStation... sooner than you think."

According to Sony new policies, could be the other way around.

TLOU, Uncharted, Killzone among others multiplayer games from Sony on Xbox.

Besides, all i see is Microsoft announcing their games for the Nintendo Switch. Cuphead, Ori, and possibly Battletoads.

Sony is getting nothing so far.

BehindTheRows33d ago

You’ve clearly read too far into things (I get why, but slow your role while you ‘hope’ Sony is turning into Microsoft).

ImGumbyDammit32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

@BethindTheRows
The exact words from Layden (just the other day) were Sony would release some of their games on other platforms and devices. How is that reading too much into something? Or do exact words from the chairman of SIE studios not actually mean what the person says? It sounds more like you are ignoring what he says out of convenience because it doesn't support your own argument.

“We must support the PlayStation platform — this is non-negotiable,” says Layden. “That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”

Sounds like what Sony is planning is exactly what Microsoft is doing here with Gears.

Before you mention Ori or Cuphead on Switch remember Sony's exclusive Quantic Dream games are now on PC. Again sounds familiar but, for some reason in your mind only Microsoft is heading down this path.

Edit: my horrible grammar.

SolidGamerX32d ago

LOL, "Sony's new policies".

Kiwi6633d ago

So a game that people say is milked and hasn't been great for sometime would suddenly be popular if it was coming to PS

Srhalo32d ago

Who knows it might even sell 13.2 million!

goldwyncq33d ago

Super Smash Bros on Xbox... sooner than you think.

Zeref32d ago

They literally came out and said that's not going to happen

ravingfairy32d ago

PS would finally get a good fps
