Respawn admits "we broke our promise" with Apex Legends' current loot box-riddled event

Respawn has responded to the furore around Apex Legends' controversial Iron Crown Collection event, admitting it broke its promise about how loot boxes would work in the game, and announced plans to sell coveted cosmetics directly.

Wow, and just like that I'm done with them. I really enjoyed Apex, despite some of its flaws. It was, in my opinion the most entertaining Battle Royale game. I hadn't played it in a while, because of life circumstances. Yet always planned to hop back on. After this, I think I'm just done with the genre altogether. Go screw yourselves Respawn and EA.

They apologize to the community that makes a fuss, then just make all the money off the people who don't spend much time in the community making a fuss. There are always more people who play a game, than care about making a fuss over what would be better for them, and trying to keep companies honest. In this case, they made a slight change, but I have a feeling that may be more because the upcoming changes to console platforms, which will require loot box percentages be transparent, and they don't want people to see just how ridiculously low those percentages are. I think in some cases, you'd have a better chance getting a legendary tank weapon in WOW, if you were not a main tank, and just tagging along with a guild that needed an extra DPS.

They are going to struggle with monetizing this game, and probably have been. Being free to play, monetization is necessary, otherwise it will cease to exist. You could argue that free-to-play model in itself shouldn't exist at all, but that's a topic for another day.
The problem is, the art-style and characters aren't as attractive to kids as Fortnite is, who get their parents to spend money on cosmetic crap.
Crap like this is happening because Respawn has no idea how to make the money needed to convince EA to continue development of the game. So EA steps in and does what EA does best: piss people off and f up everything.

I've been thinking that this whole loot box controversy is a ploy by EA to make it so people will stop complaining about regular micro-transactions. For years we've complained about the regular ones, now it's getting more to where we'd prefer that over the loot box model. Lesser of two evils and all that.

I don't think people have a problem with MT in a F2P game, so long as they don't break the balance of MP games. But the cost of some of the non loot box items nowadays can be 1/4-1/3 the cost of a full game price. A buck or two before this gen, and now you get a character skin or glider for $20.

no they wern't, lol.. Rune pages were something you paid for tho! and runes! now it's all free, hell there's even the hextec system that lets you get skins for just playing the game.

And over the case of 10 years how is it bad for me to show support to a company that l've sunk hours into their games with cosmetics - something that doesn't change the game at all for anyone else?

f2p games are allowed to do micro transactions to make a profit as long as it doesnt effect gameplay ffs- do you think they make games outta charity??

The game does not exist if it can't make money - games are not charity - you're always gonna pay something and when you stop the games dead and devs move on.
