In the long run, PS5 will be defined by its approach to gaming, not by raw power, as 4K will lose its appeal sooner rather than later.
That has always been the case for consoles though. It comes down to content at the end of the day.
PS5 will be defined by games and Sony will deliver.
At then end of the day... Sony have proven themselves... TIME AND TIME AGAIN. They deserve our support and we deserve their next console. Playstation ftw
It'll have power, too.
At the end of the day you're going to get both raw power and games.
@Oathbreaker Strange, I remember early on in this generation there were loads of articles pointing out that the Xbox One was weaker than the PS4. Every AAA game showed the graphical advantage the PS4 had, and Sony fanboys lapped it up (what with the first six months or so of the PS4 being dominated by indie games) Now though it's a complete 180, now power doesn't matter, now it's the games that matter and power means nothing. How about we all admit that games are important, but so is power. I mean if power wasnt important we wouldn't need a PS5 or Xbox Two.
'*will be defined by' Oathbreaker is 100% right. + I'm certain both new gen will easily achieve the minimum resolution required which wasn't the case in 2013. A jump is indeed required for a new gen hardware.
@shaggy2303 - i agree totally. In the beginning of this generation PS did not have the games and XBOX did start out of the gate with the best and most exclusives. BUT then we had grass gate and 900P - 1080P makes you a better gamer etc. It is quite funny seeing this all changed now. XBOX will deliver the games next gen - there is a reason for the aquirement of a bunch of new studios and getting a lot of talent in the game development world. The agenda is shifting with the wind from the ass of all PS fanboys. Unfortunately this also means a lot of the media. BUT i think we can all agree that resolution, FPS, and games etc. all matter when choosing your favorite platform. And the next gen will for me also emerge a new element - freedom to play you game everywhere you choose. On your console, PC, and even your phone streamed through game cloud or you own xbox console.
@Cigi, Pretty sure that wind you're smelling isn't coming from the PS fanboys.
If power mattered so much then why is the Xbox One X not turning their sales around? Why is the Switch at 720 P about to pass lifetime Xbox One sales this coming fall? You can have all the power in the world, but, it has no meaning if you got no games to play. Also higher res hasn't swayed the sales ratio towards Xbox either, games still sell the most on PS4 still.
@cigi You're delusional just like shaggy PS4 had games from the start xbone had some but PS4 had them and yes Indie titles but Microsoft had..... Ryse son of Rome and wait they had TV integration, kinects, and weaker hardware.
@Cigi "XBOX will deliver the games next gen - there is a reason for the aquirement of a bunch of new studios" if they couldnt release decent games in their 3rd generation in this industry, with the talent they have already acquired this far. I wouldn't hold your breath for next gen being much different.
Sony had games at the start of the gen though. So, it wasn't just power beats all, games don't matter, it was an added bonus that people could gloat about the power, while also getting the games. The idea that Sony had no games at the start of this gen is a fallacy that often gets perpetuated against Sony consoles, and oddly enough, it seems that 5 years into the gen, the console which isn't bringing games isn't getting the same criticism from those who spent all that time saying Sony had none the first year or so.
Sony's games on pS4 are mere shadow of what they were on the PS3.
Really? Spiderman was/is a stunning game, God of War was amazing ( I still need to finish it) Uncharted 4 was decent, but not as good as 2.
Completely agreed. There were many PS3 games that set new milestones and brought something new to gaming. Uncharted 2 combined solid 3rd person shooting with amazing character development and narrative, GOW3 showed us how the pre-rendered scene blended seamlessly with gameplay and also the insane scale of the boss battles, LBP allowed us to create almost to the limits of our imagination, KZ2 showed a huge graphic leap for consoles rivaling PC, the PS3 was where the Souls series was started, and the list goes on.
BREAKING: THIS IS PS5. According to this leak- the GPU will be clocked at an insane 2ghz. This equates to 9.2 TF on the RDNA architecture. Or roughly 14 TF on the GCN Architecture aka over double the power of the X1X. Almost RTX2080 power.
During the start of the generation most games are multiple platform, unfortunately. It Usually takes a while to get games that r built for the system to shine. Power is very important initially to show differences and thats why i got the ps4 over xbox
Well things could change if Sony decided to launch the PS5 with some high quality exclusives. In addition to that the PS5 is backwards compatible with the PS4 and will dramatically improve PS4 games. With that said if someone is looking at the PS5 to play high quality Sony exclusives I'm pretty sure they will have plenty of them to choose from when the system releases. That's the reason why I believe power won't be so important this time around in the beginning of the generation especially with the PS5 being backwards compatible with so many high quality games. Now of anyone has to be worried about having the weaker system it's Microsoft because they need to have the most powerful system of they want to keep their promises and not lose face.
I think Sony at least will be on the ball with the PS5 at the start. There is a reason why there is not a lot left exclusive wise coming to the PS4. I think they will have plenty of teams working on PS5 games right now and most likely have had them working on them for a good year or so. I think there will be 2 or 3 exclusives at launch or launch window. Then a few spread out over 2021.
Also take into account the PS5 will be backwards compatible with the PS4 so there will be a nice library of exclusives to choose from at launch. Not to mention PS4 games will be even better on the PS5 so that will be even more reason to get one at launch.
I think there will be one or two exclusives for PS5 during launch window to showcase the power and new capabilities. They will probably be shorter experiences. Cross-gen games might have their PS5 versions shown as well with ray tracing, native 4K and better visuals etc. Especially for people upgrading from base PS4, there's a lot to like here. Not so much for PS4 Pro owners, unless there's a PS5 Pro from the start.
It's important not to be underpowered at the start but it's obvious both will be powerful consoles with similar power and able to easily deliver the required standard resolution (4k now) That was not the case in 2013. Rest is matter of timing when you feel exclusive games make it worth it for you to upgrade to new gen
Sony will bring it as usual.
They didn't`t bring it for me. I never got one.
XBO or Switch didn't bring it for me so I never got one.
Gaming consoles defined by their gaming selection. Astonishing. /s
Who knew that video games were of paramount importance to gaming?
MS lost that plot this gen. soo.... it might not be that obvious as we thought it was
They will have enough power and they are good at making old hardware better by optimization as the generation goes on. And extra flop or whatever won’t be that If of a deal this gen. They make the games and should continue to do what has made them successful. The only thing I think the games they want to censor should have a separate version with a higher rating like Adult. I understand the censoring but they should just give us the same game that’s in Japan .
You know ps4 is region free. . . If you just gotta have your perv anime games you can just import it because no console maker is gonna allow adult only games on their system.
So basically just like the PS4?
That’s nothing new, same goes for the rest of them.
As usual. It's Sonys direction that makes them stand all for 4 generations. Not hardware.
I just hope there's a lot more to next gen rather than just more power and prettier graphics.
Think you may be disappointed. I mean VR has been introduced this gen, so with the PS5 itll just be prettier version of what we've got on PS4.
Faster loading times is huge.
Having an SSD is already making next gen interesting. Add that along with BC and other features and I see no reason to not get one.
I expect the PS5 to be the most powerful console or equal to Scarlett, otherwise I will be disappointed. & of course amazing games are the most important thing.
PS4 isn't as powerful as bonex and yet when it comes to what is most important, the games, its still the superior system, no need to be disappointed.
Thing is, PS4 was actually more powerful when they launched the last generation. Xbox was a step behind and a lot of similar titles had to run in 720p vs 1080p on PS4. All of the games developed for this gen have to be able to run on base Xbone. It’s a sub-par console and it makes a difference with what everyone gets. Power and capability are very important to developers because technology dictates how immersive and visually spectacular your game can be. But I have faith in Sony. At launch their last two consoles have been more powerful than Microsoft’s.
It's almost like Sony hasn't been providing quality games for decades. Now they have the power to boost that quality even further.
"as 4K will lose its appeal sooner rather than later." The excuses have already begun, now that there will be no power or resolution advantage for xbox anymore things like power and 4K suddenly dont matter anymore. No matter, when it comes to the best games they've always been on Playstation and will continue to be.
Stupid thing to say. It’s assumed it will have great games, but if it’s performance, online services, subscriptions lacks compared to the competition then that too can sway potential customers. You can’t pin it’s success on one single thing. Regardless the ps5 will have the ps4 momentum to initiate its success.
In other words nothing will change and dominance will continue, gotcha.
As it always has been...maybe with ps3 being the exception.
Ps3 was an amazing generation, game wise.
Oh it definitely was a "playstation" in terms of memorable games, and good times, just that it was the one time Sony decided to make "power" a preference, instead of easy development.
Sony approach to gaming has never changed. Games, games, games, games. 😉😉
I don't see how 4k will lose its appeal when 4k is becoming the standard for most content, most all TV's are 4k as standard.
How can you write such a long article without really saying anything. This felt like a poorly written essay done by a 15 year old. It's not his points, it's the fact they're so obvious and hollow. PS5 will be defined by inventiveness and a unique approach to game design. For what console is this NOT true? It's like the author is some kid who desperately wants to be perceived as a very clever adult
They don't need to focus on power, their studios are so talented that they're able to achieve better visuals than their competition with lesser hardware. With that said, I'm sure it'll have plenty of power to boot.
Don't need to focus. But their top tier studios making some of their most criticially acclaimed games have pushed the envelope of graphics this gen, and set the bar high for others to try and strive for. If their studios are given power, they seem to know how to use it, so they have to at least have a respectable amount of power to continue that standard that they've set for themselves.
The nintendo way...15 years later...
Is their approach to censor everything?
In other words scarlet is way more powerful
Games games games 1080p n 60fps would be a good start
I've always found people's obsession with 4K baffling, when, if you do the numbers, 4K-capable sscreens are in the minority here in the States. Gimme instead 1080p at rock-solid 60fps and use the extra processing power for stuff like further draw distance, number of on-screen objects and AI. That to me is much more impressive than 4K.
So far, Sony's strong commitment to building the console with VR being a major component in it's design, whilst MS bullshit people and then state that VR isn't a focus, has already cemented my decision on where my money is likely going. In fact, the fact that PS5 is already backward compatible with all previous hardware, including my existing PSVR has done that. I really couldn't give two monkeys if MS bring out HAL from 2001 as their next console, and it can make you a cup of coffee. They can get to fuck. Not interested because they seem too focused on horsepower than actual games themselves, and the so called "AAA" industry is severely dropping the ball on that all round, but at least with VR and backward compatibility, you've something to be exited about with the new and old straight out of the box.
GDDR5 memory is an opsee.
Polygons matters more than pixels.
Technically....GPU's work on vertices. :)
PlayStation has never been defined by power. Sony has released powerful consoles in the past and will likely continue to do so in the future, but their focus has always been on games, and as far as I'm concerned that's how it should be.
4K will lose its appeal? Hardly. It will be the benchmark customers expect. This reads as though fanboys assume the new Xbox is going to be more powerful, and they are attempting to set a narrative. Power always matters. Is it the end all be all? Nope, but it’s certainly matters to a lot of customers.
Good news for me, then. I'm very happy with my PS4 and its games.
I hope it will mean preserving digital heritage as in allowing to download everything from PS1/PS2/PS4 games on PS5 + why not some PS3 titles made by Sony as a start ... as you can see the emulation works is progressing in a way it shows nothing is impossible to do.
