Will Death Stranding release for Windows PCs?

While Death Stranding sits among 2019’s PlayStation 4 blockbusters, a Windows PC debut is also planned.

Sony isn't claiming the game is "Only on PlayStation" so I would say yes.

Razzer2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

Oh really? Why isn't Sony saying this game is exclusive? Why did Sony create a trailer earlier this year called:

"Only On PlayStation | PS4 Exclusive Games"
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

And yet Death Stranding is nowhere to be found in that trailer. Wishful thinking? Nope. Common sense.

Death Stranding will be on PC.

Aeery2221d ago

I will wait the Ps5 or PC release. I really need 60+ fps.

travestyj2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

@Razzer

They say it's only on PS4 in this trailer and others

https://youtu.be/rP3UngLFou...

They also have it listed as Playstation ex elusive on their website. They own the IP and the engine the game is built with was made by Sony for PS4.

There are plenty of PS4 exclusives missing from that trailer. Even Dreams isn't there. Doesn't mean it will be on PC

In regards to the engine

Kojima:

"Usually when you go to use, buy or borrow an engine, someone will say, “Lend us your name,” or of course ask for payment. We had no contract with Guerrilla Games, but when we met them they suddenly gave us a box, a very pretty box. When we opened the box, there was a USB dongle inside that had the source code for the engine.

It was different from the engine they originally gave us, so we decided we should give this new engine a name. That’s when we came up with the ‘Decima’ name (derived from Dejima – an artificial island in Japan where The Netherlands and Japan would trade during the Edo period). I really feel that with both of us working on this engine we are accomplishing the work at twice the speed and building something really fantastic."

https://blog.us.playstation...

It was a joint effort, it wasn't made purely by Sony.

The game was also funded by Sony from the start who agreed on a PC version when the deal was first announced.

Q6. What other platforms will Kojima’s first independent title be available on, besides PS4?
The title is planned to become available on PC (after PS4).
Q7. How long is the exclusivity?
We are not disclosing details.
Q8. Will Kojima’s second title (and beyond) not be PlayStation console exclusives?
We announced an agreement regarding Kojima’s first title, and SCE cannot comment on titles beyond that.

https://archive.md/aNiK3#se...

They called it a console exclusive in 2016: https://www.sie.com/en/corp...

Does any of this mean it will come to PC? Who knows, probably not but i wouldn't be shocked to see it come later down the line.

@travestyj
"They say it's only on PS4 in this trailer and others "

Ok.....strange. So now we have conflicting messages. The game was announced as a PS4/PC game and as a "console exclusive" and here we have a single trailer with the words "Only on Playstation". I've seen no "others'. And I didn't see this advertised in the official reveal trailer or the promotional materials on the games sales pages.

No where on Amazon's page do you see this game described as Only on Playstation or Exclusive:
https://www.amazon.com/Deat...

But on just about every PS4 exclusive over the last few years include this message on the top of their respective Amazon page:

"Only On PlayStation:
Exclusive games take you on incredible journeys. Experience award winning epics to family friendly favorites only on PlayStation. Learn more"
https://www.amazon.com/Marv...
https://www.amazon.com/God-...
https://www.amazon.com/Days...
https://www.amazon.com/Hori...
https://www.amazon.com/Unch...
https://www.amazon.com/Unch...

Sony really needs to clear this up.

2221d ago
Mystogan2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

It's gonna be on PC eventually. They never referred to it officially as exclusive. Not on the box. Not anywhere.

And whenever that is the case. You know it's gonna be on PC eventually. Besides the fact that they even said this in the beginning. But everyone seemed to have forgotten lol.

Streaming is coming, boyo. The only exclusivity badge for any game will be service exclusive. So you can get over your precious platform exclusive needs. They don't exist anymore. This is the evolution of gaming away from a niche market to becoming the top entertainment market without peer. Appreciate that, it will make future games better than ever. And it will bring new studios and new game mechanics. Yes, it will bring shovelware, but 10% of a 500 million install base means almost any developer can survive and prosper. Selling to 2% means 10 million units sold and the ability to afford your next project. It will revive the industry, create jobs and hundreds of new studios. Streaming will bring a new golden age of gaming.

BLizardXD2220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

"Will Death Stranding release for Windows PCs?"

this landing on pc will change many gamers perception.
first, the 2015 contract was already signed by sony, which included a pc version. the contract was based on the assumption the IP would use common middleware for deployment. the engine it's using does not create the bind though. the contract was for the IP, not the engine. in the aspect of chain of command, the IP contract is higher than engine. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 was evident of this. Microsoft still holds publishing rights to the original Ninja Gaiden 2 engine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

just remember this when Death Stranding lands on pc.

To be fair there are games with the "Only on PlayStation" tag on the box art that later got a PC port like Nioh and Detroit. Just means it can go either way. Out of interest was Sony announced as the publisher when the platforms were originally announced?

rainslacker2220d ago

I dont care either way. I'll play it on ps because that's where I play games mostly. If it comes to PC, I hope my fellow gamers enjoy it there if they prefer.

I recognize that exclusives have their place in selling a console, but I'm not going to stress it if not every game is an exclusive, or even if a console maker releases their games elsewhere. So long as the expected quality is there, and they take advantage of the hardware where applicable, I'm good.

Worry about if kojima will take advantage of ps console hardware should be the least of people's concerns, because outside first party, he actually is known for it, and seems to take great pride in squeezing all he can out of the ps platform. He's a tech junkie over everything, and he's a huge playstation and Sony fan.

northpaws2221d ago

It is using Decima Engine, I would say it is almost impossible that this would release on PC.

MasterCornholio2221d ago

Unless Kojima uses another engine but that would take some time to do.

GTgamer2221d ago

@mastercornholio trust and believe he ain't doing all of that 😂 😂 😂 😂

Razzer2221d ago

That doesn't make it impossible at all. It means Sony allowing the Decima Engine to be used in the PC version is part of the agreement they made with Kojima.

quent2221d ago

ok little genius and how and on what platform do you think these game engines get coded/created on ?, you with youre 21 upvoters complete fail

Glak182221d ago

@quent

Since PS4 is based off the Linux kernel and heavily uses OpenGL, that leaves two options:

1 - The team that developed the Decima Engine were forward thinking and planned for using completely different APIs

or

2 - Kojima would have to have a completely different version of the game to work with Windows and DirectX since they would be totally different wrappers

So let's figure out which one is more plausible....how many PC games utilize the Decima Engine?

Hint: ZERO (0)

I don't have any upvoters, only 20+ years experience as a software engineer. How and/or what the engine is coded in doesn't matter, what matters is what it is coded to do and what is will interface with. Now since it is a proprietary engine written to specially create PS4 games, the chances the engine is overhauled (basically rewritten from scratch) to work with Windows is extremely slim (although possible).

rainslacker2220d ago

Not really impossible. He has the source code, and if he was given the go ahead to use the engine using PC based APIs there is really nothing that would prevent a general consumer release on PC. Dev kits can already build to PC, often are pcs, and then only difference between them and a standard PC is they're closed systems with the proper software to interface with the hardware, and they can output to console dev units for direct hardware testing.

All indo all day is write tools which takes APIs from engine makers, tool makers, or console makers, and make them work on other platforms, then I write interfaces for easy integration into yet other engines or API's.

Its dry, very technical work, but far from impossible, and it's not even exceptionally hard if you do it enough because there are so many interface layers in modern game engines, tools or gaming hardware, that I can choose what is the best approach, and try different things to see what is the most efficient.

Kojima's team also makes game engines, Sony they should have the capable qualifications to make the necessary changes for general PC release.

Persona 5 isn't "Only on PlayStation". Go play it on PC, Switch or Xbox.

Persian_Immortal2221d ago

https://www.youtube.com/wat... , their is a version on the main PS account of the same video that says Only On PlayStation for a few seconds. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

let me carefully explain what's going on here, and does that community manager still work for Sony i doubt it a peon mentions something invalid and false and the people run with it, but Kojima and Sony never mention PC

1. Sony Music Entertainment is doing the complete soundtrack for Death Stranding all the music in DS will be licensed by SME and will be Sony property which also inflates the buget of the game further pushing the possibilities of a PC port. (NEW Information)

2. Decima Engine games are all exclusively on the PS4 why do the inbreeds fail to read and realize this, Rigs, Killzone Shadowfall, Until Dawn, Rush of Blood, Inpatient, Horizon Zero Dawn etc the upcoming titles on the engine are likely to follow suit unless the tools here think HZD2 and KZ5/GG New I.P is also going to PC?

3. Mark Cerny is the Technical Producer (Sony Exec/Consultant) and every PS title after the PS1 produced by Cerny/ Designed has been exclusively on PlayStation I.E Marvel-Spiderman.

4. All the Motion Capture / Facial Animation done at San Diego with help from Sonys Visual Service Arts Group who are heavily assisting in the games development as per mads 300+ developers claim, Kojima Productions is a 100 man team .

5. Playstation's lead Audio Engineers assisted in the recent trailer production and are likely implementing PS5 audio features as well, which is something every Sony first party is currently getting support for, including Insomniac Games who have had multiple studio hires coming straight from Sony.

6. Kojima has a Satellite Studio houses in Guerrilla Games to further improve the Decima Engine and Kojima is likely gonna continue his partnership with PlayStation given the freedom and support hes being received.

7. VASG referred to Death Stranding as a franchise in 1 of their job listings, so this likely means we will have more Death Stranding being that PlayStation is dumping alot of money into this property and are likely gonna want to make the most money out of it and sell consoles in the process and lets humor a PC release probably another Sony Published Epic Exclusive like, Journey, Heavy Rain, Detroit, Beyond all owned I.P's but if they have yet to put anything on the scale of God Of War, Uncharted on the Epic Store why would this change now it has a better chance appearing on PSnow before it hits PC?.

2221d ago
2221d ago
Persian_Immortal2220d ago

@Tree FIddy oh that was piss poor did you at least think longer then 2 seconds when replying let alone fact checking?

1. Lmao you realize the Decima Engine is just the Killzone Engine from the PS3 Gen with a Name, most sony studios engines dont have a name but of course the games made on those engines are Sony Owned I.P's .

2. They own all the Trademarks "World Intellectual Property Database" confirms this key word I.P 12 in Total that more then just the U.S, you own a computer learn how to use it and do research.
https://www.wipo.int/brandd... search Death Stranding and you will see Sony Interactive Entertainment as the owner of all the Trademarks

3. There biggest Producer being involved means. They are putting alot of hands on this game.I already mentioned Sony Visual Arts Studio's involvement with motion capture, facial animations and general game developmen. The only other second party VASG worked with was Insomniac Games who again, the exclusives they have made are for PS only are your starting to understand? If not just means you need to learn to read.

4. Sony Music Entertainment is now in a partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment to work closely on making music for their First Party Exclusives. That's what you dont seem to grasp here either SME is only gonna be doing this for Sony properties.

Sony funded the game right? So it stands to reason that it would be exclusive without stating it

Ceaser98573612220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

Well It's trademarked as Sony's property and decima engine (Guerilla Games) is owned by Sony again.
We will need to hear what Sony and Kojima decides..

So Publishing and Trademark has diff meaning.. Destiny was published by Activision. Sony even Published All QD's game..

Anyways if a PC release happens we will know soon...

trooper_2220d ago

This is a PS exclusive, period. With Kojima working closely with Sony, the chances of this coming to PC is slim.

Marioraider182221d ago

Where has it been announced for PC?

generic-user-name2221d ago

That was before the decima engine came into play. The pc version hasn't been mentioned in years.

AspiringProGenji2221d ago

The game was never announced for both platforms. Kojima just said on Twitter one day that “everything goes multiplatform eventually” so everyone took it as the game was not gonna be exclusive, and this was even before he started to visit studios looking for an engine and settled with Guerrilla games”

I am not against this idead but I am juat saying...

xX-oldboy-Xx2221d ago

That was a translation error I believe, it's a Trademark of Sony uses Sony's engine that was developed by GG.

This isn't the same situation as Heavy Rain or DETROIT.

2221d ago
Razzer2221d ago

"I dont believe the game was never officially announced for PC Razzer."

Actually it was announced to SIE stockholders as a "console exclusive".
https://www.sie.com/en/corp...

But other than that, the only other reference to the game coming to PC is from the PadPoet blog post which as been deleted and exists now only in a web archive page.

My confidence isn't so high after looking into this more. I really have no idea at this point. As I posted below, I am now seeing references to the game as a PS4 exclusive that I had not seen before.

Here in the right hand corner:
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

And this list of PS4 exclusives:
https://www.playstation.com...

Still do not understand why Sony isn't more vocal about this exclusivity though.

"Yes another port begin."

Hilarious. So I'm begging for a port of a game that I've preordered to play on my PS4 Pro. Yeah...that makes sense. Sit down, son.

2221d ago
Chumdiddy2220d ago

It was an article from thr day the partnership was announced that has since been completely outdated.

People keep pointing to one publication that jumped the gun, since admitted they jumped the gun and corrected themselves.

It'll go to PC if Sony allows it and that seems unlikely (at best).

2221d ago
Imalwaysright2221d ago

SolidGamerX

What's "speculative" about that Q&A? It point blank stated that the game was coming to the PC.

Also, it was a community manager that worked for Sony that posted that Q&A. It was someone that was representing Sony so it is 100% more official than random N4g users claiming that the game won't be released on the PC without any proof that it won't.

Deleting the Q&A isn't proof that the game won't be released on the PC. Why didn't someone from Sony come out and say that it was a mistake? That the game was not coming to the PC?

People like you are the ones doing the begging.

2221d ago
Imalwaysright2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

A community manager that worked for Sony Computer Entertainment is an official source and no amount of spinning will change that.

"Deleting the comment is even less proof its coming to PC" but it is proof that it won't come to the PC?

"Not surprised you couldn't end your comment without a personal attack" Not surprised that you're an hypocrite that can't take the same exact "personal attack" that you dished.

"I don't have to beg for anything" yeah so you say...

2221d ago
Razzer2221d ago

The more I look into this, the more conflicting information I am finding. Amazon's page doesn't have any mention of "Only on PlayStation" while most other recent exclusives state it prominently.

But now I am seeing multiple references to this game being exclusive to PS4.

Here in the right hand corner:

I legit don't understand what's bad about people wanting games? Besides, PS4 players do the exact same thing, it's not like it's one-sided.

I own a PC (7600K+970+16GB 3200MHz DDR4), PS4 Slim and a Nintendo Switch and I'd be down for buying this on PC; that being said I don't mind buying it on PS4. What do you have to lose by more people having access to good games? Do you have such a hard on for a company that legit doesn't care about you as an individual that you'd prefer that over consumer freedom? Because that's sad if so.

Proof: https://i.imgur.com/Ki99dip... because I know there's diehard fanboys out there who'd bring this to question first.

Teutep2221d ago

Anyhow, people should read this https://www.reddit.com/r/pc...

I'd say there's nothing wrong about being hopeful; as long as you keep your healthy dose of scepticism. If you do however own a PS4, not buying this game just due to hopes of a port is stupid - if you ask me.

LoveSpuds2221d ago

@tuetep
Exclusivity is a key element that Sony has which strengthens their brand and drives their success, I personally want to see Sony consoles continue to succeed and deliver and that is why I am keen for Sony to continue to deliver big exclusives, it's good for the Playstation brand.

starchild2221d ago

I completely agree. "Port begging" is one of stupidest terms ever invented. Anybody seriously using that term comes off as extremely childish and irrational. There's nothing wrong with wanting good games on your platform. It would be illogical not to. The ones hurling that term at people as if it were an insult recall an image of Gollum jealously guarding their precious exclusive repeating "it came to me...my own...my love...my precious...it's mine!"

carcarias2220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Would love to play on pc at 60fps, but I'll get it on PS4 rather than wait.

However, all your common sense and rationality is lost in these comments sections, imho. Fanboys are too hard-line to like the idea that what could be a groundbreaking title might appear on another platform. You'd think they'd just be happy it won't come to Xbox (if they really have to have their console war), but no, they get all insecure and protective even when it comes to a platform that isn't a direct competitor.

It's sad, but you only have to look at all the downvotes, even on things that are simply verified fact, to see how it goes around here.

I remember when the game was announced they said it would be on PC, I even remember the little PC logo on the website. Lots of people here denying that ever happened because it upsets them for some strange reason.

I mean.. PSnow is a trademark of Sony. Not saying it is or I even care if it does but never say never. XD

Teutep2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

That's actually a fair point. I'll probably have played Death Stranding by then (assuming I'll pick it up instead of play my almost neverending backlog across all the platforms), but it's probable - especially with the next generation coming and Sony's further investment into streaming technologies (including the collaboration with Microsoft) that we'll eventually see this game, and some other titles hit PlayStation Now (which is usable on PC).

Luckily I live in a country (Finland) where we have no datacaps and fast internet speeds are cheap, so this'll be a good alternative to buying a PlayStation 5 for example.

I'd respect Sony more if they just made PlayStation more of a brand, than necessarily limit it behind hardware whose sales grant them less money than the software side of things. Although, while I don't see hardware being replaced anytime soon, it's the direction we're seemingly slowly going towards.

Think that rumor that they'll still make a new console but at a profit at $1000 will be true though. The series consoles will remain their cheap alternative throughout next gen I would say. The golden age. No ESRB*. No ratings at all. It was glorious.

*I know the ESRB was formed by the industry to prevent others from stepping in and taking control.

Darkegg1d 4h ago

Interesting on ESRB. “ The industry, pressured with potential government oversight of video game ratings from these hearings, established both the IDSA and the ESRB within it to create a voluntary rating system based on the Motion Picture Association film rating system with additional considerations for video game interactivity.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...

Is that how the industry isn’t required to offer consumers a transferable digital token to sell games they no longer play or maybe don’t like? And then treat us all like pirates? That’s how the government is not involved, they had to placate the situation to avoid oversight.
