New DXR Tech Demo shows amazing real-time ray tracing and global illumination effects

DSOGaming writes: "Opus Visual has released a new video, showcasing its new DXR Tech Demo. This demo was created for the Nvidia DXR Contest and showcases real-time raytracing and global illumination capabilities. Unfortunately, the team did not release this tech demo to the public so we don’t know what it requires in order to run with 60fps at both 1080p and 1440p."

Yeah, the difference ray tracing makes is huge to my eyes.

ROFL! Okay Beavis!

Raytracing is way to taxing for games, they should abandon it, other wise games on consoles are going to be 30fps again next gen because of it.

Physics used to be too demanding in games too, give it time and you won't even notice the hit on performance (if done right like physics nowadays).

Imortus_san2227d ago

Those videos are games running on 1000€ graphics cards, and Raytracing makes a 66% impact on the frame rate, 10 years from now it may be low taxing on the Graphics but at this moment it's will be very taxing.

"Those videos are games running on 1000€ graphics cards, and Raytracing makes a 66% impact on the frame rate"

And people paid silly money for a GPU and a separate PhysX card years ago (and Physics still gave a performance hit), we are talking about the tech being used not the cost of the card......

Imortus_san2227d ago

The tech is shit because it impacts game performance by 66%.

Lennoxb632227d ago

30fps has been the standard for about 3 gens now. It's time for yall to give up this hope of 60fps becoming the standard other than for competitive and/or fast games. It's not gonna happen. Frames don't sell games. So it's not worth it to developers. Most gamers don't even know what a frame rate is.

You have to understand. Devs risk losing sales next gen if they sacrifice graphics for a higher frames. If games look like they do now next gen with a higher frame rate, lots of people are gonna feel like the purchase isn't worth it.

Imortus_san2226d ago

Are you saying that games only sell because of grafics!? That's very wrong.

indysurfn2227d ago

Interesting Video, they do let you know that it is being done in this case by software. What if AMD is playing on words? What if they dont have specific hardware for "ray tracing", but instead have hardware that does "ray tracing " AND XYZ. Some times during tech reveals they only announce part of the picture and let us assume. Kinda like when people assumed that Xbox one was going to be more powerful that PS4 until the full specs came out.

tontontam02226d ago

You are basically saying devs should just stop improving graphics quality.

Lennoxb632226d ago

No, I'm not saying that games ONLY sell because of it's graphics. But that its one of, if not the biggest selling point. Devs are not going to sacrifice graphics for frames when most gamers don't even know what frames are. There are games that aren't even really games (more like interactive movies) that have sold because the graphics were so good. No game has sold because it has a higher frame rate,

It might take a few years but ray tracing is the future, there is no doubt about it. It will speed up development time dramatically and we'll see more and more indie games that rival AAA.

It won't be like VR either, it's not something that needs acceptance. It will just replace the old lighting pipeline and be easy for devs to adopt, simple as that.
