A reader argues that the current generation of consoles is the best there’s ever been, even despite all the controversies.
Not even close.
4th is my personal favorite with so much diversity like Genesis/CD/32X, SNES, TG16/CD, NeoGeo and then late comers 3DO and Jaguar. My next favorite is the 6th with the likes of Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox. So much good stuff that laid the groundwork for years to come.
6th is my favorite, then the 7th. then 5th
I agree, great games had to be great games....eye candy wasnt enough....Genesis, SNES games played great, you could see the glimmer of things to come with DKC, KI and vectorman.....the 3D0 and Jaguar showed the possibilites of the future, arcades were still prevalent....it was an exciting time being a gamer....
Ive owned the most games this gen thats for sure
I couldn't disagree more
I got more games this gen for ps4 and switch vs PS3 and Wii U
nope ps2, dreamcast, and n64 best gen
Clashing two gens together but I do agree that time period was the best. Home releases were amazing and arcades still packed a punch.
Not to me but to each their own.
This is the best generation of video games ever - for making less quality games. - for trying to get us to by old games over and over. - for getting lied to and scammed by games company's. - for getting our hopes up time and time again only to be met with crappy sub par game launches.(some nearly unplayable) Yes great game generation Hahahaha
Hard to argue on that, but still we had some great moments with some working (hehe) masterpiece games.
Yes there are always some good games every new gen, but this gen is just laking in every departement. There are less AA and AAA games then never, you have a shit ton of options and it divides developers that insted of makink normal games are making VR or mobile games.
I have my favorites from each gen, but video games have progressed far from what they were when I started. That said, I cant say one is better than the other, as they all have defining moments and games from each gen.
Overall I like this gen more than last gen due to Japanese developers making a comeback. But there were too many legendary and revolutionary games in the 4th and 5th gen that have lasted through the ages to say this one is the best. Gotta give a gen another generation or two before we can decide on how good it is; that way graphics won’t blind anyone to how good or not said gen really is.
Micro transaction +dlc , patch every week because of releasing unfinished games generation surely. The worst generation for me, still some gems to play like tw3 and bloodborne, but it still sucks.
This gen and last made me bitter towards games companies, I don't trust anything they say anymore. This kind of thing never even used to cross my mind. Mictrotransactions and certain types of DLC have either slightly ruined or completely ruined games that I once would have guaranteed to have loved. Games that need patches at launch put me off ever wanting to pre order again. The only game I have made that exception for in recent times was the re-release of Shenmue 1 and 2, but even that game was a mess at launch. That was the final straw for me, unless I start seeing games released without needing a patch on day 1, I am not pre odering a game ever again. I am not paying so much of my money to be their beta tester, if that is what they want then they should hire people to do the job properly.
' Games that need patches at launch put me off ever wanting to pre order again' I don't remember the last time I bought a game brand new day 1, I used to do that almost all the time last gen .
@Segagamer Games in this generation are far far more complex than games a couple of generation ago, all this extra complexity takes time and unfortunately the developers just done have the time they need. I mean look at the likes of No Mans Sky, its been roughly 3 years since it got released, should they have waited all that time to release it? Also day one patches are a must, even after a game has gone gold these days the developers still work on it, trying to fix every little bug/glitch. What should the developers do, wait a few weeks before releasing a patch? And regarding beta testers, they do hire them. but having a pool of a few hundred beta testers compared to a couple hundred thousand or even more is huge. I do agree with the "not pre-ordering games anymore" though, there are far too many games released these days, I have plenty of games to keep me busy, I'l wait and possibly get a game in a sale rather than pre-order it.
Always found it weird how Bloodborne, one of my favorite games of all time, came from my least favorite gen of all time.
Nah. We've had some great games but it's not the best gen ever. The 5th and 6th generations were pretty much the golden age of gaming.
While that is debatable it is certainly LEAGUES better than PS3/360 era where if you didn’t make a COD, Halo or Gears game then you might as well quit game development.
Bioshock, mass effect, skate, uncharted, resistance last of us, dead space, demon's souls, infamous, lost odyssey , ni no kuni, xenoblade chronicles, gears ect… the plethora of games and new ip was staggering it wipes the floor with gen imo.
And PS3/360 games were definetely next gen compared to what had in the PS2/Xbox era whereas current generation feels like an extension from the previous generation wich is a 1st since I started gaming in the Mega Drive/Snes era.
Most of those games you listed were at the beginning of the gen. Later it was COD, COD, COD, BF,BF, BF and Halo, Halo, Halo. It was the shooter era and thats all everybody wanted to play much like it was The BR stuff this gen. 7th gen started out with a sense of wonder then it got lame.
You do know that most of the series that are successful today started last gen? This gen has been the most boring.
It has had its ups and downs, but I have enjoyed it overall. I'm not sure if I can say it's my favourite gen though.
It must be the reader's first generation of gaming. Fortnite is probably also the reader's favorite game...
The 6th generation of gaming will always be my favorite. The Sony PS2, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Gamecube, and Sega Dreamcast were four very good consoles. Game diversity was also at its highest. There was a nice mixture of 2d and 3d games, turn based and action based jrpgs and wrpgs, open world games and linear games, arcade style games and cinematic story driven games, etc
I would say that if each console have their own unique experiences by delivering awesome exclusives, but as you know only Playstation 4 is the only one doing that , not even a $2000 dlls gaming PC can't deliver what PS4 has done so far, the Switch is just releasing indie games and some inferior multiplatform games, well in the end is what the Switch can only afford with its low specs sorry, and finally the Xbox , the xbox is only focusing on services ?, will not say more there lol.
well, if one was a milennial i could see why someone would say such a thing. but in reality, it is one of the worst.
HAHAHAHAHA! Nope. That was 1990-2001. Most of the best franchises still going came from this era. The best consoles. Genesis. Saturn. SNES. PS1. Dreamcast. N64. Game Boy. Game Gear. Nomad. Neo Geo AES. Neo Geo Pocket. PS2, Gamecube. Xbox. Wonder Swan. The best PC games ever. No microtransaction. DLC was called Expansion packs. Some big PC games got free versions. Ok, sure online gaming was in its infancy. But no kids screaming into the mics. Being a gamer then meant it brought people closer not the vitriol we see today.
The worst ever you mean right!?
It's definitely not.
Nah, the PS3/360 generation was better - We got 2 Gran Turismo games + a prologue compared to 1 GT game this gen. 4 new Gears of War games compared to 1 new one this gen. 2 God of Wars compared to 1 this gen. 3 full Uncharted games compared to 1 this gen. 3 Mass Effect games compared to 1 poor one. 2 full Fallout games, 1 this gen. 2 full GTA games + 2 expansions, this gen we just got a prettier GTA5 for modern consoles. 3 Batman games compared to 1 this gen. 3 full Halo games compared to 1 this gen. 2 Bioshocks compared to 1 this gen. Skyrim and Oblivion compared to ...... no new Elder Scrolls game this gen. Forza Motorsport games haven't been better this gen, Forza 4 still remains the best one. No Test Drive Unlimited games this gen, no new Driver game (SF was amazing), Star Wars games have been pants this gen, no third person shooter that's better than Vanquish, Ni No Kuni 2 wasn't as good as the first one. The only was you could think that this current gen is the best one is if it's your first one.
There is a reason gaming PCs looked meaningless back in 5th and 6th generation especially with th 6th generation, the ps2 has more and better games than pc.
8th gen was filled with controversy after controversy. Dev teams and leaders scandals making news and headlines rather than the games they're making, loot box and MTX nonsense. Both PS4 and Xbox, at the very end of the day, were under powered and very overhyped. Not including exclusives. slightly better graphics, resolution bump was it. AI still terrible, game designs were more the same. The FPS was hit and miss but still largely a miss. 9th gen needs to see better game structure, vast open worlds where you can enter every single building, across not just city's but states and country's. The crew experimented with this so I know it can definitely be possible 9th gen. 7th gen will always be my favorite gen.
Yes, in term of graphics....Only
I more partial to 4th-6th generation of consoles. Besides a few games here and there the past couple of generations of consoles have been sort of stale.
PS1, Saturn, N64 imo.
