Report: Wal-Mart Replacing Music with Blu-ray

The article states :

"The Bentonville, Ark.-based retail behemoth, citing a 23% drop in CD sales during the first four weeks of the fourth quarter, continues to scale back inventories of music packaged media; supplanting it with electronics and movies.

"We believe Wal-Mart is increasing its exposure to consumer electronics, video games and Blu-ray, and reducing floor space devoted to CDs and standard DVDs," said Richard Greenfield, analyst with Pali Capital, in a note.

Greenfield said the chain's floor space devoted to DVD, including Blu- ray, ranged from up modestly to down slightly."

Now billions in revenues and profits for SONY

It doesn't surprise me. More BDs and games are being bought from Walmart than ever before. So many companies try to unseat BD as the new established format and they ultimately fail at such attempts. Stats show that more BD movies are selling than DVD as mass adoption of HD becomes the norm. On top of that games are getting to be even more popular than movies as the chief medium of entertainment. This should come as no shock to people. As for music, online downloading has been prevalent for a long time, and many music artists are adopting the online model as the primary method of distribution. Welcome to the future people, we're living in it.

you want proof that blu-ray is here to stay?

i have got you proof:

i went on holiday to the far east recently (malaysia, singapore etc)

almost half of shelf space in those DVD shops are devoted to blu-ray... blu-ray is seriously entrenched and is actually competing with pirate DVDs.

The domination of BD started when they won the format war early this year. It's the natural cycle of the next gen formats.

Blu Ray is the future ..accept it and move on

wal-mart has a downloadable distribution for audio. I know you think this is because they are starting to support blu-ray a lot more, but it's really because they don't want to spend the money on remodeling every store to make the dvd area smaller. They are putting blu-ray in the slots where the cds used to be. They now make more on digital distribution than they have for the past couple years with physical copies os cds.

Good points but bullsh1t. Walmart is replacing CDs because of "HUGE" nationwide drop in CD sales. It isn't b/c of Walmart's "download" service. It is b/c of consumer disinterest in mainstream music. You give too much credit to "Walmart" when iTunes should be the finger to point if any. However, I don't even think iTunes as the singular reason why consumers are quitting on the crap that's being churned out these days.

but but but isn't Blu ray dead?

I have no idea why so many people keep saying Blu-ray is failing when it has gets stronger and stronger.

So many bitter HD-DVD early adopters, or scared 360 fans.

Major movie studios, Playstaion 3 and, major retailers continue to grow Blu-ray bigger every day.

Sitdown4035d ago

this was a decent thread until your comment regarding hd dvd supporters and 360 fans. Believe it or not..but there is a world that exist beyond them, who still believe bluray will not win. A constant argument I hear is that there is not a big enough difference for people to jump on board....and that not necessarily has to do with hd dvd owners or 360 fans. Geeez......just enjoy without trying to bash.
