Which Console Has Won the War of the 8th Generation?

BY PHANTOM: According to Wikipedia, we are currently riding out the end times of the 8th generation of gaming consoles. PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the latecomer to the scene the Nintendo Switch have all performed well, but which console has "won" this generation, all things considered?

Still hilarious that Wii U isn’t even in the discussion about 8th gen consoles anymore.

Dreamcast was even brought up more often anytime people discussed about 6th gen consoles.

iplay1up22196d ago

Wii U, was a great console. I still have mine, because there are games like Xenoblade X, I can not get on Switch. Switch, has already outsold the lifetime sales, of Wii U, and N64.I had to get mine on Amazon, there were NONE, in any store around me. I thought that was strange, because Amazon, had some great deals on the Switch, I got mine, with two games for $299, the games suck, Hydro Thunder, and some party game. Still a good deal.

Vetgamer2196d ago

I still think it's a great console Nintendo just didn't belevie in its own product. I'd buy a wii u over a switch any day.

Question_Mark2196d ago

Getting a little generous with those commas, aren’t you?

DivoJones2196d ago

Damn dude did you take English classes at Trump University?

_SilverHawk_2196d ago

If it's a generation where playstation had a home console on the market then the playstation won. The ps5 already won next generation and it's not even out.

BrettAwesome2195d ago

@vetgamer
Why the hell would you say something stupid like that? Almost everything the WiiU does, the Switch does better. Don't get me wrong. I've had countless hours of great gaming on WiiU, but to say that you'd buy it over Switch any day, well...it comes across as uninformed and stupid.

notachance2195d ago

I always wondered when they gonna do Xenoblade Chronicles + Xenoblade Chronicles X remaster on switch

gonna buy it day 1 if it ever comes out

I bet if Sega released a new console back in 2003 (5 years after launch) we probably would have forgotten the Dreamcast the same way we did Wii U.

Maybay2196d ago

Haha...You funny. Imagine a console selling 13.56 million LTD in hardware sales, and having these software sales number.

Mario Kart 8 - 8.44 million

Super Mario 3D world - 5.82 million

New Super Mario Bros. U - 5.79 million

Super Smash Bros. For Wii U - 5.36
million

Nintendo Land - 5.19 million

Splatoon - 4.94 million

Super Mario maker - 4 million

New Super Luigi U - 3.04 million

Wind Waker HD - 2.30 million

Mario Party 10 - 2.21 million

Marioraider182196d ago

It only sold 13 million? XD

Father__Merrin2196d ago

The reason for that its because that's all there was to buy. It was same with wii and even the switch most of what you see on shelfs are Nintendo games

r2oB2196d ago (Edited 2196d ago )

@ Maybay

Imagine a console with a software attach rate of 5.5:1, according to Nintendo’s website (Switch). For reference the WiiU was 7.8:1.

Either there are not many options when it comes to software, forcing people to buy the same games (lack of options); or there is an adequate amount of software available and people choose to buy the same games (lack of quality). Which is it?

On topic, the answer to the question asked is PlayStation 4.

The Wood2196d ago

Even if the ps sold less than its main competitor it would of won on games alone

septemberindecember2196d ago

It wouldn’t have gotten a lot of those games without the sales though.

The Wood2195d ago

Their ethos is consistent. They always had plans for exclusive content

septemberindecember2195d ago

@The Wood

Because their sales are consistent. If they weren’t publishers and developers wouldn’t make very many exclusive games for them.

rainslacker2195d ago

Dreamcast had a lot going for it, and quite a few notable games. WiiU did have some good games, but none of them really became any mainstream success stories, and there were only a few cult classics that came from it. DC ended before it's time, but was part of it's generation, and had more power than the winner of that gen. WiiU came late in the generation, and wasn't ready for the gen that it was actually a part of, and was only a small step over the prior gen. NIntendo tried to recapture the Wii craze, and failed hard. It wasn't a bad console, but Nintendo had some bad decisions surrounding the system.

With Sony closing in on 100million PS4 units sold, I think it's a no brainer.

Nintentional2196d ago

Soulja boy should have marketed the Wii U. Wii YOUUUUUUUUU

Thundercat772197d ago

How is this even a question?

Are facts not clear enough? Playstation 4 is the indesputable winner of Gen 8 from start to finish. Wii U is Gen 8 and Switch is Gen 9 and even if you want to ignore that, PS4 is a the top.

JackBNimble2196d ago

So the switch is going to be the undisputed victor of gen 9 considering Nintendo already has 40mil head start. It could be another year and a half before Sony and MS jump into next gen.
The switch should have sold 60mil by the time next gen comes for Sony and MS.

I can hear Nintendo fanboys already....

mkis0072195d ago (Edited 2195d ago )

Could be, but I'd bet that the Switch has 2 more years of 18-22 million sales before it takes a dive. Just based on Nintendo console history. It has portability going for it, but look how 3ds ended up... 75 million and it will end well below 80 million. Nintendo needs 3rd parties to get over the 100 million hump for the Switch.

It will hit 77 million at most within those 2 years, then sales will abruptly fall as the wii did. If the ps5 can replicate 3 out of 4 sony home consoles success it will beet the switch. VR is the new frontier.

Thundercat772194d ago

We don't care about what Nintendo fanboys say.

Gen 9 starts with Playstation and Xbox. Nintendo is on a bubble of their own.

Relientk772197d ago

1st place: PS4
2nd place: Xbox One
3rd place: Wii U

IMissJimRyan2196d ago

If you add Switch to Wii U, PlayStation 4 still keeps first place.

CertifiedGamer2196d ago

Switch is a 9th gen console

Raven7222195d ago

@Nintentional , @CertifiedGamer

Actually, the Switch is considered an 8th generation console. A new generation doesn't start solely because a company decided to release another piece of hardware. It wouldn't even be the first time a company released two consoles in the same generation. Magnavox did it during the first generation. Atari did it during the second. Sega did it during the third. Other factors determine the start of a new generation. It isn't until the industry as a whole feels like it moved forward that a new generation is declared. This typically involves multiple manufacturers releasing new hardware significantly more powerful than their previous offerings. One company releasing a new device, especially when that device doesn't even exceed the power of current gen offerings, doesn't cut it.

ILostMyMind2196d ago

I can almost see the Switch attached to the WiiU as the 32X with the Mega Drive.

IamTylerDurden12197d ago (Edited 2197d ago )

PS4 will go on to become the second most successful console of all-time. There is an outside chance it could become the best selling console ever, it's still within the realm of possibility. Why even ask the question, PS4 has been oddly dominant and remarkably consistent all gen. Sony has taken control and dominated for 6 straight years. Microsoft went from boasting about numbers to tucking their tale and hiding any true sales. Wii U was a colossal disaster even though it has some great games. Switch is doing great, but it's not necessarily 8th gen and even if it was PS4 is still more dominant.

sprinterboy2196d ago

It'll do about 120m lifetime, never will a game console sell 150m again imo.
120m is a testiment to how awesome ps4 has been though.

BehindTheRows2196d ago (Edited 2196d ago )

With it expected to ship 112.8m by next March, 120m is too low. Not, I don't expect quite the highs of 155m, but there's nothing suggesting a console can't do those numbers again.
