Days Gone Review: The open-world zombie adventure game we’ve all been waiting for | Daily Star

Days Gone made fans of the post-apocalyptic genre a lot of promises to PS4 fans when it was revealed way back in 2016. Thankfully, it delivers on every single one of them.

Reviews are all over the place. Seems like an average game all around though. The game currently has a 72 on Metacritic.

NecrumOddBoy2242d ago

5s, 10s..... it's really weird. The only consistency amongst the negative comments reference some clunky controls and some graphical issues when it comes to the bugs and glitches. That's understandable one of the other negative reviews are very similar to what Horizon zero Dawn and many other open world games kid which is the double standard I've been called generic when something like breath of the Wild is called revolutionary. I think it seems like a really good game and I look forward to playing it tomorrow but if it's technically broken then it needs to get fixed if it's not then I don't know what all those issues are because according to those who have played it longer, a lot of the reviews sound like blatant Lies when it comes to the story and such

sprinterboy2242d ago

Exactly DF mentioned they came across a few bugs and glitches, a few yet some are sayings it has loads of glitches etc.
I trust DF more than anyone out there tbh

ziggurcat2242d ago

one review even criticizing the game for having content.

supes_242242d ago

Exactly, I'll find out for myself tomorrow night. I've waited long enough for this and my hype is still very high. I'm playing regardless of reviews, I'm excited.

outsider16242242d ago

Exactly! I'm confused right now. Graphically this game stands along with HzD, RdR2, Odyssey. The complains were, like you said, mostly the bugs and glitches.

But when they say it's another generic open world, what's wrong with it? How is it generic, when all other open worlds have the same type of quests, missions etc. I'll find it for myself i guess.

-Foxtrot2241d ago

It is double standards and it happens alot

It's called repetitive or a tired formula yet Far Cry New Dawn was let off the hook, Assassins Creed usually are and Call of Duty/Battlefield are praised every year almost with better scores.

Kribwalker2241d ago

@foxtrot

Far cry new dawn let off the hook?
https://www.metacritic.com/...
It’s a 71 on meta. Your conspiracy theories really need to stop. It’s an average game that some enjoy and some don’t. It’s not some giant conspiracy.

@ziggur
No.
It’s getting dinged not because of too much content, but because of too much of the same content (sea of thieves anyone?)

spektical2241d ago

freaking this. Everytime i brought this up in botw came out on /r/nintendowswitch i was blasted for being a hater. The irony that botw is more full of life than hzd or in this case days gone just blows my mind. If anything they provide the same level of "liveliness" but thats not reflected by the reviewers for some reason.

Christopher2241d ago (Edited 2241d ago )

***Far cry new dawn let off the hook? ***

I think he meant Far Cry 5.

https://www.metacritic.com/...

It didn't set the world ablaze, but there weren't review bombs for being yet another Far Cry open world game after the three before it (yeah, I didn't forget you Far Cry Primal). Yet a new IP gets the complaints pretty heavily.

I'm honestly fine with the metacritic score, it's what I thought it would score. It definitely has bits of hypocrisy in the reviews where journalists seem to only want to complain about certain things with certain games, not those "other" games that do the same thing but I like for one reason or another and can therefore ignore this complain of mine in this game where I don't like the protagonist or something else.

The reviews so far have played out how I expected. So, I guess I'm getting harder to surprise for gaming journalists.

This strikes me as one of those capture, kill, clear, complete type games. Very similar to AC, but it can still be enjoyable. I know I'm going to get some enjoyment out of this game. I enjoy some of the AC games so I can enjoy this.

ramiuk12242d ago

closest i could say is assasin creed/far cry 5 with zombie type things.
if you enjoyed those you will enjoy this

2241d ago
Atticus_finch2242d ago

Yea the complains for the game are a bit odd, either way I can't wait to get my copy tomorrow.

FlyingFoxy2242d ago

6 is average 7 is good, in actual numbers.

sprinterboy2242d ago

Agreed
1to4 below average and unplayable
5 average
6 above average
7 good
8 very good/great
9 superb/must buy
10 phenomenonal/masterpiece

Livingthedream2242d ago

I guess same logic doesnt apply to MS games though

2241d ago
Dark_Knightmare22242d ago

7.2 out of 10 is a good game not average. Average would be 5 out of 10.

CorndogBurglar2242d ago

In a perfect world that's how it would be. Unfortunately I find that when it comes to game reviews a 5 is a pretty bad game. 7's are about my limit of games I'll play.

I'm talking on average. I understand reviews will be different among reviewers.

joab7772242d ago

It’s a great game marred by a few technical issues, and a long drawn out story. Things will get patched and I prefer that my sprawling and gorgeous open worlds actually demand your attention for more than 15 hrs. Live the crafting and especially the unique take in freakers.

A tabloid site review? Really?

Knushwood Butt2242d ago

They used to save the 10/10s for page 3.

Razzer2242d ago

Who to believe? The daily dot? Slant? Paste? lol....not sure why those sites are more/less reputable than a tabloid.

Guess you'll have to play the game yourself. shock....horror

2242d ago
Razzer2242d ago

@SolidGamerX

I have no idea what point you are making.

2242d ago
Dark_Knightmare22242d ago

Slant are a freaking joke. They gave Sekiro 2 stars out of 5 and gravity rush 1 and 2 I think 1 and 1.5 they are def not somebody to listen to. They are clickbait at the absolute lowest you can go

BenRC012242d ago

That's the plan, BS reviews to make you buy trash.

Bennibop2241d ago (Edited 2241d ago )

There is no difference between a reviewer from a tabloid and a review from a gaming site, there is no qualification that one reviewer holds over the other that qualifies them to review games. Reviews are just opinions of an individual does not mean they are right or wrong as tastes can vary massively.

S2Killinit2242d ago

Damn we are getting really mixed reviews. Its crazy. Not sure who to believe but im playing this game regardless because i really like what ive seen wirh my own eyes, so, i guess ill find out for myself.

sprinterboy2242d ago

"i really like what ive seen wirh my own eyes, so, i guess ill find out for myself"
Well said, its how I do it mainly.
The amount of comments I've seen today with gamers cancelling there pre orders etc is mind boggling because of a few scores around 6.5 and 7 lol.
I've seen enough to know I'll like it.

Dark_Knightmare22242d ago

I promise you most of those people didn’t have the game preordered they are jus saying that to get internet likes because their pathetic

alb18992242d ago

All serious reviews give 5 and 6 so is not that mix.

mkis0072242d ago

There are more reviews 75 and above than 74 and below...

Dark_Knightmare22242d ago

Sorry the majority of reviews are 75 and above which indicates a good game nice try though

Knushwood Butt2242d ago

^

None of those are serious :)

alb18992241d ago

I'm enjoying it, I Iove apocolyptic settings.
Graphics are excellent and since patch 1.04 i haven't had any issues at around 6hrs in.
Very satisfying stealth killing a base 15 strong without being seen.

Thundercat772242d ago

Reviews are not consistent. I am seeing many mixed reviews and no clear pattern which tells me this is a good game, not a master piece but also not a bad game.

Hardiman2242d ago (Edited 2242d ago )

Yeah a lot of the complaints thrown at Days Gone I've experienced in AC Odyssey among others. In fact playing it right now so I'm not hating on it but there is a double standard on display here.

I got it installing now and cannot wait to fire it up!

ClayRules20122242d ago (Edited 2242d ago )

Aaah man, your lucky lol. I hope your really enjoy the game bud!

And I agree about the double standard.

Dark_Knightmare22242d ago

I love odyssey and I’m a huge AC fan but the game is way too big and every freaking question mark is the same five things lol.

sprinterboy2242d ago

Your seeing mixed reviews cause the usual crowd/journalist (we know who you are) are just generating clicks for ad revenue etc.
I personally use playstation access, Angry Joe, radbrad and digital foundry to get a quick honest opinion on things game related.

robtion2241d ago (Edited 2241d ago )

Those are all pretty good sites. I respect Angry Joe for calling out games on microtransactions etc. I think happyconsolgamer's review of Days gone seems fair. Picking it up tomorrow so will see for myself.

lazyboyblue2241d ago

I've not seen much to warrant such low scores sort far. 6 hrs in.

The Days Gone Remaster Is an Unsurprising Cash-Grab and Nothing More

Honestly, who is the Days Gone remaster for? Fans of the original won't find anything new here.

fortressofsolitude.co.za
Christopher31d ago

I don't know why you're being downvoted. It is a new thing in the remaster. Perhaps it's not worth the $10 upgrade if you've played. But, I mean, if you never played the game, then just wait for it to go on sale, forget about it, and continue not playing it like you did for the last 6 years?

TheEroica31d ago

The downvotes are likely from the excuses... Horde mode doesn't obsolve Sony from cash grabbing its easily duped fanbase.

S2Killinit30d ago

I love how people call this a money grab while the real money grabbing is in other genres. But, I think people who are that dumb deserve to be fed with skins and micro-transactions, and don’t get to complain that single player games of this caliber are few and far in between.

IAMRealHooman30d ago

@TheEroica
they changed the header. it was originally the " Remaster has nothing new" or something similar.

Christopher30d ago

It's still in the description: "Fans of the original won't find anything new here."

princejb13431d ago

Days gone is amazing regardless and for those that didn’t play the original I highly recommend.

SimpleSlave31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Yes. All of Sony's Remasters - all the ones stemming from the PS4 library - are cash-grabs. When all they needed to do was patch them to run at 60fps, up the resolution, and be done with it. But then they had to actually care about Bloodborne, and that's a cardinal sin over at Sony.

On a side note. I just got The Sinking City Remastered for free, because I owned the game. Weird...

anast31d ago

The Bloodborne thing is a real issue.

SimpleSlave31d ago

I'm sure they banish people to the Nightmare Frontier if they as much as whisper the name in the office.

Bebedora31d ago

Cash-grab or not. As long the Bend Studio gets their share, I am for it. I don't know, but I still hope for making of a second title. However, in a way It's a cash-grab. They still put something extra to it (horde mode), that is.

anast31d ago

lol Yeah they seem to hate the idea of a new Bloodborne anything.

I've still got to play the shrinking city. I enjoy Lovecraftian stuff.

RaidenBlack31d ago

Hope the recent remasters like Sinking City and Oblivion, ups the ante and alters the industry's approach.
But what fans really want is just a straight up sequel ... oh and add sequel to 1886 as well.

GhostScholar31d ago

I would love a days gone sequel. Days gone to me is such a better game than the last of us. The world in days gone was so great.

31d ago
mkis00731d ago (Edited 31d ago )

To me they appeal to different players outside of just being zombie games. I like them both, but days gone is more fun to me. The last of us 2 is my murder game though along with red dead 2 and gta 5. Love the realistic violence.

jznrpg30d ago

I’m a big fan of Days Gone but TLOU is a better made game. How much you enjoyed each game is of course up to you.

neutralgamer199231d ago

With the recent cancellation of Bend Studio’s live-service project, there’s now a real and exciting opportunity for the studio to revisit Days Gone 2. This might be the perfect time for Sony to greenlight the sequel—especially with the PS6 likely on the horizon—because Days Gone already has a strong foundation, a passionate fanbase, and significant untapped potential.

It’s worth remembering that Days Gone was Bend Studio’s first major AAA title developed for a home console. Before that, the studio had primarily worked on portable systems like the PSP and PS Vita, or acted as a support studio. That leap to a full-scale open-world console game was ambitious, and although the game launched in a somewhat rough state, that context is crucial to understanding its initial reception.

Gaming critics were often harsh in their reviews, frequently comparing Days Gone to other PlayStation exclusives that came from more seasoned console studios like Naughty Dog or Santa Monica Studio. Despite these comparisons and the early technical issues, Days Gone still went on to sell over 7.6 million copies—a remarkable achievement for a new IP. Even more importantly, Bend Studio listened to fan feedback and steadily improved the game through patches, updates, and optimizations. Today, Days Gone stands as a much more polished and enjoyable experience than it was at launch.

That kind of growth shows Bend Studio’s resilience and potential. A sequel would not only benefit from their hard-earned experience, but also avoid many of the pitfalls that affected the original’s development. Much of the foundational tech, gameplay systems, and world-building has already been done, meaning the studio can focus more on innovation and storytelling rather than reinventing the wheel.

Compared to the high-risk, long-development timeline of a new IP—which could take 5+ years just to get through pre-production—returning to Days Gone is both a smarter and more efficient route. If Sony and Bend Studio commit to Days Gone 2 now, there’s a strong possibility it could be a key PS6 launch title—offering a fan-driven, proven IP with greater polish, depth, and scope.

Let’s not forget Bend Studio’s deep legacy either. This is the same team that brought us Syphon Filter, a series that helped define early PlayStation experiences. With the right support and direction, they can absolutely deliver a worthy sequel that lives up to the franchise’s potential and the studio’s legacy

Days Gone PS5 Is a 'Really Good Piece of Work', Say Tech Experts

Sammy writes: "Back when Days Gone Remastered was announced, many fans were squinting to see the differences between the excellent original PS4 version and its PS5 re-release.

But now with the game readily available – and our 8/10 review declaring it the “definitive version of a fan favourite” – we’re beginning to get some meaningful tech analysis.

And according to Digital Foundry, this is not just the bare-bones resolution upscale some had anticipated – “a lot of effort has gone into it”, according to the tech experts. "

First game sell well enough to warrant a sequel? Our received well enough?

Alos8845d ago

It sold well but reviewed only okay, which apparently wasn't enough for Sony.

Cacabunga45d ago

Sold well and received even better.. had a bad first month due to technical issues but ended up being one of the best games from last gen

Knightofelemia45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

That's the nature of the beast. If a game like a movie does not meet certain numbers then they write off the franchise. EA scrapped DS2 because the DS1 remake did not meet certain numbers. I was hoping the remaster of DG and the fact it also came to PC would convince Sony to green light a DG sequel.

PanicMechanic45d ago

Critic reviews were appalling. The worst reviewed game I’ve ever seen. By that I mean, poor quality journalism, dishonest writing and review scores which are out of touch with fan reception.

It’s $10 and there are plenty of games out there for you.

Flewid63850d ago

Then its not a huge difference?

Killer2020UK50d ago

Of course you wouldn't, nobody would. If you have never experienced the other, then you don't have the reference needed for comparison.

TheEroica50d ago

Sony getting ready to milk some more people on dumb products.... I can see the psvr1 and 2 owner salivating over days gone remaster. Lol. What a ruse song is pulling.

Knushwood Butt49d ago

How can Sony milk customers if it's such a 'dumb product'? If it's so dumb, nobody will buy it, and there's no milking.
Plus, there's nothing preventing people from getting a copy of the PS4 version.

Babadook749d ago

As a PSVR2 owner. Yup. If there’s a VR version I would be there day one.

Greg280150d ago

There are plenty of people who never had a chance to play this game, now they can with the remaster.

Don't understand why people who already played the game complain about a remaster. No one is forcing you to buy it. There are plenty of new games to play

MoonConquistador35d ago

And then there's a group of people who did play the game, thought it was awesome and would be happy giving it another play through.

Unfortunately I'm one who only got it on the PS5 instant game collection so no path for a 10 quid upgrade for me.

andy8550d ago

Days gone is 85+. It got heavily marked down at launch for bugs where as others get a free pass for that. It's a fantastic game.

MoonConquistador35d ago

One of my favourites actually, I thought it was fantastic from beginning to end.

Kosic50d ago

And it's not even a big overhaul remaster. It's list turning up the graphic level by one. It's quite embarrassing, as the original wasn't that bad. And the remaster isn't that noticeable

I spoiled myself by modding this game on my PC. Genuinely one of the best looking games I've ever seen. Whilst this remaster looks nice it just doesn't compare to that sadly. It shows the effort that these remasters could put in if they wanted

REDGUM50d ago

I so hope this game or DLC for those of us who own the original sells well.
Ive said it before, its an underrated game for sure & was unfairly judged upon release.
Please try this game if you haven't already.

For those who say 'i won't purchase digital only' you can pickup a hard copy for 5 bucks here in Australia, then add the DLC and you have a superb game for $20 or so.

Give it a shot, tell me I'm wrong After completing the game.

Game on gamers.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH50d ago

It was full of bugs at release I wouldn’t call that being unfairly judged. If you want your game to score well then release it in a completed state. Now with that being said I think the game was pretty good.

Knushwood Butt50d ago

It really wasn't.
The worst I encountered was a horde spawning on top of me when exploring a cave.
Did you even play this at launch?

S2Killinit50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

It wasnt full of buggs, it was very playable. That was the excuse for the hit job at launch before people started to speak up about how great the game was.
