Eurogamer - Days Gone review - a shallow copy of many better open-world action games

A frequently gorgeous, sadly generic open-world game that runs out of steam well before its extended play-time is over.

And this is why Gamefly is such a critical life saver!

After I'm done with Shadows Die Twice I'll send that back to Gamefly and get this.

jukins2200d ago

Lol yea I had the collectors edition preordered but woke up this morning to exactly too all these lowish review scores canceled that and put it on my gamefly list and got lucky enough to get it sent out today.

Aeery2200d ago

It is really hard to take seriously a review when start like this :

"... someone at Sony was looking at Horizon Zero Dawn, first announced around the time that work on Days Gone officially began, and said right girls, you've had your metaphorical glass of 'secco with this one, let's make a post-apocalyptic game for real men."

naruga2200d ago

the game was screaming even from trailers that it is mediocre (no matter the production) ...im not buying this (seems very generic and it was not expected from Sony side to release such generic game) ,,,,though its the best of its kind for popcorn and full walkthrogh movie to relax on youtube

jukins2200d ago

Well not only are there plenty of reviews that state this theres gameplay videos to back it up. Man I'm a diehard playstation fan but really all I'm saying is for me the game isn't worth the $120 for the collectors edition. So why not be safe and use gamefly lol man fanboys are crazy

gangsta_red2200d ago

Amen Jukins. Even if someone is a die-hard fan of any developer or console, there's still reason to be fully on board with Gamefly.

jukins2199d ago

Wow people hate gamefly dont know why. $30ish bucks for 3 months, ifnyou buy yourself a gift certificate, for 2 games out at a time and you can add two additional for 7 each a month. I get to play so many games without having to spend full retail price. But anyway its perfect for games like this. Previews all had caution on what to expect and it came to fruition. I mean I'm still gonna see for myself but when you cant be sure no reason to spend a full $60 let alone $120

Honestly I'm not even going to gamefly this, just seems so uninspired to me

darthv722200d ago

this could set up for a really good sequel. Many new Sony exclusives have pretty tame first outings only to be followed up by a big successful second and climactic third.

toddybad2200d ago

Hopefully they won't make a sequel

jukins2199d ago

What Sony exclusive had a tame outing and got a second chance? Theres always a chance.

RememberThe3572199d ago

I doubt we'll see anything more from Days Gone. When was the last time Sony launched to such a muddled reception? The Order?

I'm worried for Bend Studio now, they've shown they're not on the level of Sony's other studios. They might get one more chance at a new IP but this launch has been horrible. I expected a lot more from them.

doritos2200d ago

again from the review showing the journal LIST agenda "Maybe someone at Sony was looking at Horizon Zero Dawn, first announced around the time that work on Days Gone officially began, and said right girls, you've had your metaphorical glass of 'secco with this one, let's make a post-apocalyptic game for real men. "

all these big site reviews are attacking the same thing, don't turn a blind eye because its not on your platform of choice.

DrumBeat2200d ago

Dude, let's be objective here. It's a middling game. Big deal. Not to say that you can't enjoy it, but let's not start slamming outlets for their objective opinions.

There's some maliciousness in gaming journalism; sure, but there's a common consensus here, and it ain't great.

rdgneoz32200d ago

So bashing a game for having a male lead is great journalism?

DrumBeat2200d ago

Let's cut the nonsense. That happened, what, twice? Polygon and someone else. This is a middling game, period. You can't just slap an SJW brush across EVERYONE that gives this game a middling review.

Sony studios can pump out OK games too. I think that's the real issue here. I'm no fan of PC/SJW culture, but I see this excuse making and scapegoating everywhere here, AND IT'S NONSENSE.

Like I said, if you like it that's great, but don't tear down an entire industry's worth of journalists and reduce their work because of two idiots.

2200d ago
nyu12199d ago

"objective opinions. "

Subjective opinions. I agree with your comment though. People always call out reviewers when they don't like the score.

It's important to note that a few reviewers really love this game. Players should look at gameplay and see if they might like this, because I have a feeling many will.

I've honestly never seen such a mixed spread of reviews for a game. Some sites are giving it 8's and 9's while others give it 3.

pwnmaster30002200d ago

Agreed. I guess this is one of those games where you really can’t trust the reviews. I say pick your most trusted site and based it off them. Mine is usually easy allies or game informer and the gave it a pretty decent score so I’m for sure gonna enjoy it.

Sgt_Slaughter2200d ago

When multiple sites agree on the same negative points, that's not a call to stop trusting reviews. That means they all collectively noticed the same thing and clearly the game is sub par. No amount of downplay can change that.

bloop2200d ago

Seems to be similar to Mad Max. That game got such mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it. I was going to preorder today if it got glowing reviews all around but I think I'll wait it out now. Bugs seem to be a big issue with most reviewers so I'll hold out until there's a few patches. Shame, I was really looking forward to this game.

AdmGenAladeen2200d ago

After platinuming Mad Max I realized it just depends on what you like. I take all reviews with a grain of salt unless there are blatant technical issues. I've enjoyed many games that weren't very popular. I'll just try this out and see for myself. As far as Mad Max goes, to me, that game was criminally underrated. It was a very well done game imo.

william_cade2199d ago

It's probably one of those, some people will hate and some will love it type games.

Days Gone PS5 Is a 'Really Good Piece of Work', Say Tech Experts

Sammy writes: "Back when Days Gone Remastered was announced, many fans were squinting to see the differences between the excellent original PS4 version and its PS5 re-release.

But now with the game readily available – and our 8/10 review declaring it the “definitive version of a fan favourite” – we’re beginning to get some meaningful tech analysis.

And according to Digital Foundry, this is not just the bare-bones resolution upscale some had anticipated – “a lot of effort has gone into it”, according to the tech experts. "

First game sell well enough to warrant a sequel? Our received well enough?

Alos883d ago

It sold well but reviewed only okay, which apparently wasn't enough for Sony.

Cacabunga3d ago

Sold well and received even better.. had a bad first month due to technical issues but ended up being one of the best games from last gen

Knightofelemia3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

That's the nature of the beast. If a game like a movie does not meet certain numbers then they write off the franchise. EA scrapped DS2 because the DS1 remake did not meet certain numbers. I was hoping the remaster of DG and the fact it also came to PC would convince Sony to green light a DG sequel.

PanicMechanic2d ago

Critic reviews were appalling. The worst reviewed game I’ve ever seen. By that I mean, poor quality journalism, dishonest writing and review scores which are out of touch with fan reception.

Huge difference i must admit, but not sure i would notice without 2 screens next to each other.

Not getting this game still, i want a new game and im tired of remasters

Muigi8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

It’s $10 and there are plenty of games out there for you.

Flewid6388d ago

Then its not a huge difference?

Killer2020UK7d ago

Of course you wouldn't, nobody would. If you have never experienced the other, then you don't have the reference needed for comparison.

TheEroica7d ago

Sony getting ready to milk some more people on dumb products.... I can see the psvr1 and 2 owner salivating over days gone remaster. Lol. What a ruse song is pulling.

Knushwood Butt7d ago

How can Sony milk customers if it's such a 'dumb product'? If it's so dumb, nobody will buy it, and there's no milking.
Plus, there's nothing preventing people from getting a copy of the PS4 version.

Babadook77d ago

As a PSVR2 owner. Yup. If there’s a VR version I would be there day one.

Greg28017d ago

There are plenty of people who never had a chance to play this game, now they can with the remaster.

Don't understand why people who already played the game complain about a remaster. No one is forcing you to buy it. There are plenty of new games to play

marioJP877d ago

Huge difference where? Besides blue color filter and darker lighting?

Remastered.....

Tedakin8d ago

Sony is now remastering games with 71s on metacritic.

Bathyj8d ago

Like that's a judge of anything
This game got scored before it was released.

andy858d ago

Days gone is 85+. It got heavily marked down at launch for bugs where as others get a free pass for that. It's a fantastic game.

Kosic7d ago

And it's not even a big overhaul remaster. It's list turning up the graphic level by one. It's quite embarrassing, as the original wasn't that bad. And the remaster isn't that noticeable

PanicMechanic7d ago

“And it's not even..”

Bugs bunny NO meme

TheEroica7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Poorly remastering if images are to be believed.

Tapani7d ago

To me it was very close to The Last of Us Part I. It was that good quality.

PanicMechanic7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Shut up. Best open world zombie game on the market

I spoiled myself by modding this game on my PC. Genuinely one of the best looking games I've ever seen. Whilst this remaster looks nice it just doesn't compare to that sadly. It shows the effort that these remasters could put in if they wanted

REDGUM8d ago

I so hope this game or DLC for those of us who own the original sells well.
Ive said it before, its an underrated game for sure & was unfairly judged upon release.
Please try this game if you haven't already.

For those who say 'i won't purchase digital only' you can pickup a hard copy for 5 bucks here in Australia, then add the DLC and you have a superb game for $20 or so.

Give it a shot, tell me I'm wrong After completing the game.

Game on gamers.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH8d ago

It was full of bugs at release I wouldn’t call that being unfairly judged. If you want your game to score well then release it in a completed state. Now with that being said I think the game was pretty good.

Knushwood Butt8d ago

It really wasn't.
The worst I encountered was a horde spawning on top of me when exploring a cave.
Did you even play this at launch?

S2Killinit7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

It wasnt full of buggs, it was very playable. That was the excuse for the hit job at launch before people started to speak up about how great the game was.
