Horror Stories out of Bioware Prove It's Time for the Game Industry to Unionize

The video game industry is a strange one. Often times we as gamers are truly left in the dark as to what it takes to make a video game. We see a trailer, some gameplay, a date that’ll usually get pushed back several times, and that’s about it. As a general audience, gamers are usually left in the dark about how the sausage is made. Rarely is the veil pulled up, and when it is, it’s not often the most luxurious place in our mind, such as when you read a recent story like Kotaku’s own Jason Schreier and his piece on Bioware.

The players have changed, but the game remains the same. Companies hate unions, and only accept them when they become as powerful as the companies. That's very difficult to achieve. Last century, it took organized-crime money to make it possible in some cases. That tainted the image of unions a great deal.

The idea is terrific: give labor real bargaining power with management. One lowly employee, or worse, prospective employee, has no bargaining power at all with a large company. He either takes whatever meagerness they offer, or he hits the road. He puts up with their incessant demands every day, or he's back pounding the pavement. It's not just about wages; it affects a lot more, such as working conditions and hours. A union means all employees negotiate terms as one formidable entity.

If only the idea weren't so difficult to put into practice.
