Iron Man VR director on its origin, possibly sharing universe with Spider-Man PS4, and more

GR: "Spider-Man PS4 helped kick off Marvel’s alleged desire to make quality video games again. While Square’s mysterious Avengers title is still trapped in the Soul Stone, IRON MAN VR was the first game to be announced since Insomniac’s web-slinging Game of the Year candidate. Iron Man VR, even though it impressed us, has a lot riding on it as well as a stigma attached to it. But that isn’t something director and Camouflaj founder Ryan Payton is afraid of. He recently sat down with us at a PSVR preview event and conveyed his confidence in the game as well as how the idea came to be, its relation to Spider-Man PS4, how making Metal Gear Solid 4 and Halo 4 helped him, and more."

I hope they do something to at least start building the universe more. Obviously spiderman makes reference to a lot of marvel properties, here’s hoping we get a game shared universe to build up to something

SuperSonic912215d ago

Out of the three: Sony, Xbox and Nintendo only Sony can do a great AAA quality Marvel super hero game. Period.
The other two doesn 't even come any where close.

Those gifs are ggrrrreeeatt!

sampsonon2215d ago

it would be amazing if Disney gave sony the rights to make marvel games. this way they can build up the stories like the MCU did. would be a huge win for sony, gamers and marvel.

rainslacker2215d ago

I dunno if that's necessary. If its like the movie universe, the hero specific titles had their own self contained stories until about civil war. They were connected, but not really so.much you had to see the others.

That said, all the games would likely have to come to ps4 if they're connected. Spiderman is too central a character to leave out, and I'm surprised the movie universe managed as long as it did without him. A lot of that was due to the big focus they put on iron man, thor, and captain America, but spiderman was noticeably absent. Now they have kind of gone overboard with the characters in the avengers, but I guess it is what it is.

sampsonon2214d ago

@rainslacker: the reason Marvel didn't use Spider-Man is Sony owns the movie rights.
So sony and Marvel made a deal that Marvel can use him in the movies and Sony gets exclusive rights to the games.

and Sony would have to have rights to all the characters if they want to have the universe come together.

ShadowWolf7122214d ago

That's not what happened. Been debunked multiple times.

Insomniac had their pick of heroes to work with. Seems Camoflaj may have been allowed to pick Iron Man too.

sampsonon2214d ago

@ShadowWolf712: Sony owns the rights to spider-man movies. so you're wrong. unless you can link something to prove me wrong.

"Sony approached the team and asked if it wanted to work with them and Marvel on the Spider-Man game. Obviously, Insomniac and Sony go back a ways with the Ratchet games, and Marvel was filled in on the developer as well.

Price asked his team if there was interest, since it would be the first franchise it didn’t really make in-house. But they still conveyed excitement, being Marvel fans themselves.

Discussions with the group began, and after looking at Marvel’s other franchises, Price said the developer chose Spider-Man as the key project it wanted to do."

they weren't offered any other game. so they were misinformed to say the least.
plus that has nothing to do with sony owning the rights to the movies and marvel wanting to use the character. Sony got to make Spider-man, to which they hired Insomniac Games to make it. they didn't have a choice.

jukins2214d ago

A "universe" of single player games would be such a huge investment and probably would grow tiresome and/or difficult to integrate the different games together unless they were very similar which again would lead to the universe becoming tiresome.

Maybe, and I kinda hate to say it but, a marvel version of DC online universe. Using today's tech and some fresh ideas could have a marvel video game universe that keeps on giving

Sound to me a exclusive ironman incoming

Srhalo2215d ago (Edited 2215d ago )

Don't worry I'm sure Microsoft will get a Marvel game for kinect with power of the cloud for the flying scenes. Oh wait...

DillyDilly2215d ago

@Srhalo Kinect sold more than VR so far FYI

Srhalo2215d ago (Edited 2215d ago )

PSVR has sold more software.

PSVR has 5 times as many games as Kinect had in it's whole life and PSVR is getting new games with bigger budgets while Kinect is dead because xbox owners themselves begged Microsoft to kill off the thing and put it out of misery.

PSVR is a great addition to gaming while Kinect was laggy and unsuited to gaming since there was no way to really simulate motion it was limited to dance games and terrible "on rails" games. Where as VR can be used to enhance any style of game.

While I would like a shared Universe I don't want the first Iron Man game in the shared Universe to be a VR game.

Start a proper open world Iron Man game please.

Tony goes on a mission, he's in secluded area, he's cut off from everyone else, his armour is destroyed leaving it to the bare basics and you upgrade it over time as you explore and collect scrap parts. Seems like an easy concept to do.

Maybe we'll get a proper Iron Man vs Mandarin showdown Iron Man 3 never gave us since it f**** everything up.

Araragifeels 2215d ago (Edited 2215d ago )

It may seem like an easy concept but making it a reality and delivering will be hard. A proper Iron Man game need a great studio and a great director to make an amazing Iron Man game because past Iron Man had a great concept but couldn't deliver it.

*I would love for another Hulk game. The incredible Hulk for PS2 was the best hulk game ever.

ApocalypseShadow2215d ago (Edited 2215d ago )

No. The game can be an open world game or a VR game. There's no stipulation on what it should be first.

PSVR gamers need games too. This is one of them. I'm worried about its structure but not about it being exclusive to VR like Batman VR.

Also, don't like your concept of gathering scrap parts. More like 2 or 3 Air battle levels, 2 to 3 ground battle levels, and 2 base battle levels. Going after enemies who stole your tech. That fits the Iron Man storylines.

Also, you spend time in Tony's workshop adding and mixing and matching part upgrades after gaining enough points. Making the player the creator of their own suit. But you do start out with points to get you started at the beginning. Be it heavy armor, light armor or a mix of both depending on the mission.

You become Stark by tweaking power as you see fit or rerouting. With optional voice activation of weapons since PSVR has a mic. Works quite well for Star Trek Bridge Crew. It could work in this.

-Foxtrot2214d ago

Stolen tech? Stark would just easily replace it if it was stolen so he can go out and recover it

Why waste time finding the people who stole it with limited tech when you can get it on hand unless like I said he's been cut off

Nitrowolf22215d ago (Edited 2215d ago )

I don’t see an issue with it other than limiting the audience, but they could easily tie it in. VR iron man this gen and next gen we”ll get more power where they could supply us with both options (vr and non Vr)

They could give us an origin style, prequel, but no need to dumb down his abilities for the sake of making the game interesting when they could keep things in tact and offer us an arsenal of upgrades to make.

-Foxtrot2214d ago

It's more to do with the fact that these spin offs that limit the audience the developers always use story bits or other things found within that title in future games where most of the audience are like "Huh...are we supposed to know this? Has this happened before?"

Just seems pointless in a game that will feature a limited audience, it would confuse most of us. I mean we don't know 100% that this will be the case but lets be honest we know plenty of games that do this and I'm not talking about VR spin offs just spin offs in general which don't have the same momentum as the main games

ApocalypseShadow2215d ago

I'm keeping an open mind. But I haven't heard anything yet about ground missions or just a *mission.* Flying around better be hella fun because this will get repetitive real quick if it's just flying. Might has well just made a jet fighter game if you're just going to fly like Iron Man. I want to stand on the ground, face off a tank and hit it with a Unibeam or Repulsor Beams. Need more info.

TheGamez1002215d ago

A Marvel Video Game Universe would be awesome. Id love for them to make a proper iron man game though.
