A Look at Adjustable Difficulty Settings

"After a game has nearly gone gold and it's time for the developer to go back and create the various difficulty levels that the player can choose from, the easiest way to do it is just to increase the damage and hit points of all the enemy characters or lower the health of the player. But it's a recipe for a broken controller when players are forced to go through the exact same levels yet this time the zombies take five shots with the shotgun to die instead of two-and if one of their decrepit fingers comes off their blown-up bodies and grazes your shoulder, you die instantly. With this in consideration, when does a game become too hard? What factors should determine this?"
