Even in the pirate community, there's a strong sentiment to encourage people to buy games if they like them and support great developers. I'm not saying it's okay, but I think the threat to a game's success from piracy is greatly overblown.

I admit that I have pirated in the past. Felt too guilty and hated going through downloads and such. Now I just buy them and especially wait for sales since steam has specials all the time. Steam is really what made me get legit copies. And you should really support the devs that deserve it like fromsoft.

You do realise that any game you purchase on a console makes the developer significantly less money than the same game on PC, right? Steam gives a full 70% directly to the developers. On the other hand, developers only receive about 20-30% on XBox.

PC player here and that statement above is untrue and disingenuous.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have the EXACT same platform royalty fee like Valve, 30%. Epic recently came up with 12%.

What Valve does unanimously is that they allow the developer to generate infinite number of keys from steam so that they can sell it as bulk to key resellers and avoid that 30% platform royalty fee even. It's a great pro-consumer/pro-developer move, but the reason Valve does that is because they know that more than 90% of a game's revenue on the steam storefront comes from their own marketplace, and not from resellers. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft do this too, but NOT as ubiquitous as Valve. They do only for their first party titles, select 3rd party titles or high profile titles (think GTA, CoD, FIFA).

Physical revenue on consoles (per copy) is slightly (not significant, as you claim) less than on digital on PC, but that's an unfair comparison because consoles have an ever growing digital storefront as well. Digital on both, consoles and PC's, split the equal revenue/royalty, except Epic Games store.

Physical distribution across the planet is an entirely different thing altogether, as that depends on the publisher's manufacturing costs and the sub distributor > retail shop margins. But even that revenue eclipses PC revenue for almost all AAA and indie releases.

Pirating literally doesn’t hurt the developer. They’re either people who wouldn’t have bought it any way or they buy it when it’s cheaper.

Many of my friends who pirate will pirate a game, if they like it they’ll buy it when it’s on sale.

There been multiple studies on it. It doesn’t hurt the developer at all.
