New Oculus Rift S Won’t Require External Sensors Hits Spring 2019 For $399

The redesigned Oculus Rift S won’t require external sensors to work, features a higher resolution display, improved optics, and the ability to quickly see the real world around a user through the headset’s built-in cameras.

I think I will wait for a true Rift successor. Not enough of a jump over the original Rift to warrant the extra money.

Until it becomes full hd perfect and has a lot to offer, i won't buy another. My Rift collects dust. Also Rift 2 with no screen door effect has to offer $250 or more off new with trade in. Then i'd jump on board.

it doesn't require external sensors.. that's the point. It's more akin to the WMR headsets as it does inside-out tracking.

nishanth1232286d ago

yea but still there's a wire going to the headset itself.
That's the problem. I was hoping for it to be completely cable free.

@nishanth123 - Look at the Oculus Quest then. Not as powerful, but provides exactly what you are asking for. I mean you have to imagine that in order to have a standalone VR headset, it would be extremely expensive if you want it to have high graphic fidelity. I mean there are wireless solutions out there for the Rift, but they aren't worth the investment until it's spot on IMO.

Getting there with baby steps. No sensors, multiple cameras, better ergonomics, clearer screen, etc. The next Rift will probably end up wireless like Quest and I'd bet something like 60ghz. The Pico Neo 2 is 60ghz and Sony's patent is 60ghz.

Some might be upset about it not having all the bells and whistles of a next generation headset. But these moves are the right decision for now until phase 2 in a year or 2 for all VR.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook7772d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt773d ago (Edited 773d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal773d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow773d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal773d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt772d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.
