As streaming takes centre stage, Eurogamer talk to Microsoft about its own offering

From Eurogamer: "At this year's GDC, there's one topic ruling the conversation; streaming services, and the arrival of Google as a player in what's now become a very tangible space. How long ago it now seems from the comically messy launch of OnLive, or from when Microsoft's 'power of the cloud' mantra was a stick used to beat it during the difficult early years of the Xbox One."

“A broader philosophical question - some people see cloud gaming as the death of console, or the start of it. Is it that extreme?

Kareem Choudhry: It's not that extreme at all! I've been building consoles for 15 years - we're not getting out of the console business, we spoke about it in our xCloud videos. We love our consoles, we love that business, and we're super proud to have the most powerful console out on the market place today and that leadership position we hope to retain going foward. And I also believe your best premium experience is going to be dedicated hardware running under your TV in your living room. It's an 'and' conversation, not an 'or' conversation. Everyone loves to jump to the death of consoles, and I think it makes a great headline, but we don't think that way at all.”

But i thought MS wants to kill off consoles 😉

You know you're going to get down voted even though this is coming straight from Microsoft themselves haha...it goes against the agenda, so it must get down voted! Suppress the truth!

Rude-ro2278d ago (Edited 2278d ago )

You are not only a diehard fan that defends this company like your life depends on it..
But when you look back at Microsoft as a whole... it is clearly written out that they want full control of your software.
The sales pitch is what you and the other shills focus on..
What is the point of cloud computing?
I mean, to a trillion dollar business with a yearly average of 59% pirating?
A. Cloud computing locks in consumers.
B. Controls pirating.
C. Increases profits.

You, are thinking short term...
Microsoft laughs that people like you exist to take advantage of. Period.

gangsta_red2278d ago

Lol, I love it when someone presents facts that tear down the regurgitating nonsense on this site and the only comback is "uR a DiE HaRd DeFeNDeR!!"

The joke is on you if you can't figure out that all companies are going the same route not just MS when it comes to these services.

But I have a feeling that you'll take your faux rape a little bit more pleasantly from another certain company than you would another that you're crying about now.

The irony of your post is how you accuse Krib of focusing on one thing and then you turn around and do the exact same thing. There will be other options to playing games next gen from MS, these companies already have some form control over your gaming habits, not to mention making a list with no points and nothing to back it up.

But if you truly believe it's just Microsoft laughing and not any other media business who already has their foot in the door then the joke is definitely on you.

Rude-ro2278d ago

@gang
Was what you wrote suppose to make sense?

I literally got sea sick trying to make sense of it.

gangsta_red2278d ago

@Rude-Ro

I guess a sane, logical comment would make a delusional person confused.

Hmmmm...next time i'll throw in some childlike "youre a sony fanboy" and then write a couple of pointless paragraphs of how Sony is controlling your software just so you can understand better.

gangsta_red2278d ago (Edited 2278d ago )

Crazy right? I don't understand what's happening here, MS wants to kill single player games and traditional consoles ...and yet makes single player games and traditional consoles.

What to do, what...to...do...

ApocalypseShadow2278d ago (Edited 2278d ago )

They are only keeping hardware for the time being to hold on to the fan base they got left. If they make the full jump to digital control, they'll end up losing more players. It's why gamers ran away in droves with DRM2013. They need to try and convince you that streaming is the inevitable future this time with PR talk.

But don't act like Microsoft wasn't about going in this direction. They clearly didn't want Blu-ray and only used HD dvd to slow its adoption but was all about digital. Even said it here about Blu-ray
https://www.telegraph.co.uk...

As gaming united said, Microsoft has been caught multiple times with multiple lies and it's still defended. Drunken jester seems like he even forgot when Microsoft announced high fidelity vr for Xbox one x. Just recently, the Hololens team claim they never targeted consumers with it but only enterprise. But showed up at E3 targeting consumers with it with games.

PR talk is Microsoft's way of covering up what they really mean and what they're really doing. If casuals were to buy into things like Game Pass and X Cloud, they'd drop you guys like a bad habit. Dropping PC only to come back to it after Valve made it successful. Dropped Xbox for 360. Dropped core gamers for Kinect. Then dropped it to save themselves. But will drop you if they can get digital streaming off the ground.

gangsta_red2278d ago (Edited 2278d ago )

Everything that you said and still can't dispute Krib's point. I'm shocked you didn't also bring up RROD in your 10 mile wide long tryhard rant.

So many people got suckered into believing the powah uv teh clowd.

I still don’t think you’ll see as many games using it as extensively as Microsoft wanted it to even into next gen

Game streaming to me - will be the end of 30 years gaming. I cannot stand this forced trend of not physically owning things you buy. That includes digital games! Look at the state of those, full of DRM, MTs and Paywalls. It's a losing battle.

timotim2278d ago

Yet game streaming exists today with PS Now, and here you are still gaming and apart of it...what would be the difference?

DaDrunkenJester2278d ago

DRM, MT's, and Paywalls are included in physical games as well... Not sure what you're getting at. I get wanting to have a physical copy, but even some games now the CD just acts like an unlock key to download the game digitally. A lot of 3rd party games now require you to be online as well.

Game Streaming will never replace dedicated hardware though unless our internet becomes so good it will eliminate input lag.

darthv722278d ago

Why would it be the end? Are you of the mindset that that once new games are streaming that you cant simply plug in your old console and game traditionally?

you sound like those who feared the MP3. That it would suddenly make all your tapes, records and CD's useless when that is farther from the truth. Streaming is just another option not an absolute.

Persona 5 devs Atlus confirm Metaphor: ReFantazio will also release on PlayStation and Steam

Techradar writes: "The upcoming game from RPG veterans ATLUS was originally announced at the Xbox Games Showcase as part of E3 2023, leading fans to infer that the title would only be available on Microsoft consoles when it releases in 2024.

However, a new trailer from SEGA Korea has confirmed that the title will be coming to PS5, PS4, and Steam in addition to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One."

Not surprising. More smoke and mirrors from Phil Mattrick.

porkChop728d ago

What smoke and mirrors? Console manufacturers don't include competitor's logos in their trailers. It's no different from the PS Showcase where almost every game was multiplatform but only showed the PS5 logo.

italiangamer728d ago

Smoke and mirrors is the fact that ms denied permission to SEGA/Atlus to rapidly announce those games are coming to PlayStation too. Something Sony didn't do with the games of their showcase where obviously childish ms was quick to remind people that those games were coming on xbox too.

shadowhaxor728d ago

Just going to add that there was ZERO mention of Metaphor: ReFantazio coming to the PlayStation in any of the press releases I received from Atlus. I also reached out multiple times after the Xbox showcase about the game coming to PlayStation. If anyone is at fault, it's Atlus failing to communicate it was coming to other platforms. It's not like Xbox would have told them not to reveal that afterward unless it was a timed exclusive.

That page also doesn't exist anymore, so Sega Korea pulled it for some reason....

goldwyncq727d ago

@ italiangamer
So exactly like when Sony failed to mention that games like GT7, Forbidden West, Miles Morales, and GoW Ragnarok would also be coming out for the PS4 and led their fans to believe that those games are current gen exclusives for months?

Magog727d ago

@shadowhaxor

Xbox makes other companies keep Playstation availablity out of the news when they are featured in there showcases regularly.

TheTony316727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

Microsoft paid for reveal embargos. They did it last year too for the P3-P5 ports.

neutralgamer1992727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

I don’t know why Ms doesn’t grow out of their childish PR when it comes to Xbox. They talk like they aren’t in competition with PlayStation and are instead doing their own thing yet

Right after Sonys event they had to let everyone know of certain games also coming to Xbox yet only a few weeks later hold their own event where they buy timed exclusive announcement trailers

Paying publishers money to make sure game release information regarding other platforms won’t be announced till 72 hours after the showcase and during this time trying to create a fake narrative that some games are exclusives

Even people on social media and YouTube were saying how Ms secured exclusives. For a trillion dollar company to act like this against a billion dollar company is beyond ridiculous

DarXyde727d ago

I don't think it was misleading.

Microsoft is the master of doublespeak and veiled statements, so when it isn't used, you can very good and well assume it isn't exclusive to their ecosystem. Good example was Rise of the Tomb Raider: they literally said "coming exclusively to Xbox in 2015". I knew immediately, "Game's timed." When something is properly exclusive, Microsoft says so unequivocally.

Likewise, as soon as I saw Atlus, I knew there was no way they'd be skipping PlayStation. It literally wouldn't make sense for this kind of game to skip it in favor of Xbox. Shin Megami Tensei, sure, but that's because that's the "Nintendo Atlus game".

I don't know anyone who thought that a game developed for Xbox by Atlus would miss PS5.

If you really believed that a JRPG would be an Xbox exclusive in the current generation then I don't know what to tell you.

shinoff2183727d ago

True enough. We all know xbox gamers don't buy games let alone buy jrpgs

MrNinosan727d ago

Well, Octopath Traveler was kept away from Playstation, so it have happened, but sure, that was last gen which makes even less sense.

FinalFantasyFanatic727d ago

It's kind of a death sentence to release a JRPG on just Xbox, so it made sense that other platforms would be announced.

derek727d ago

"Phil Mattrick" lol, hahahaha. Box Car Philly.

Godmars290727d ago

When was it ever suggested to be exclusive?

Not even talking about a graphically challenging title.

shinoff2183727d ago

What does the graphics have to do with anything

shinoff2183727d ago

I hope Sony went on Twitter to let the world know most of those games were also coming to ps also

To be fair I still think ms showed off better 1st party and third party games.

raWfodog728d ago

Would have been shockingly surprised if this was an exclusive title. Looks definitely like something that I will get into. Looking forward to getting more details about the game.

2moda5gamer728d ago

Watch this sell 85% on PS5.
At least it has a chance on other platforms unlike some other titles though...

DarkZane727d ago

Yeah, if it were to sell 1 millions copies total, probably only 5-10k would be on Xbox at most.

jznrpg727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

MS paid for a couple day advertisement exclusive again heh.

PS5 physical for me

RedDevils727d ago

I'll be having the physical copy as well.

Phil Spencer says Xbox shelved game streaming box because it cost too much

Couldn't hit desired $99-$129 price point.

I know any of their xbo units and series line can do streaming but they want something small like the PSTV was. And obviously something better than the stadia setup. Given the price of regular controllers is $50-60... that seems to be half the cost alone.

Melankolis941d ago

Yea, many underestimated the cost of a controller, it's quite expensive, even more so a controller inside a portable device. Chinese devices for retro & emulation with better controller & build cost quite significantly higher than it's cheap counterpart although the specs are quite similar.

Jin_Sakai940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

“Phil Spencer says Xbox shelved game streaming box because it cost too much“

Aka we shelved it because Stadia failed.

Orchard941d ago

I'm kinda surprised they couldn't get this down to $99. Really all it needed to be, was a streaming stick w/ bluetooth with a controller in the box. That should be more than doable for $99

Melankolis941d ago

Chinese retro & emulation devices company might sell you $99 but i don't think it will be Microsoft/Sony's build quality.

Orchard940d ago

Yeah but this isn’t running anything intense. It’s not much different from a TV streaming stick.

It looks like they went for more of a set too box setup which is probably where the cost comes in - probably has a ‘proper’ processor etc

crazyCoconuts940d ago

@orchard maybe they couldn't bring themselves to deploy their software on a mini Linux kernel like all the other streaming sticks do. Windows everywhere. I remember reading about the Xbox one being two windows instances (1 for the UI, 1 for the games) managed by a hypervisor. Not a lean architecture

Orchard940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

@crazy Good point. It’s probably running Windows and needs a reasonably beefy CPU, heck I bet they can’t even run ARM in the thing - Windows on ARM is still a pretty bad experience compared to x86-64 Windows (which also isn’t exactly a great experience…)

They’re still using the dual OS setup you mentioned on the Xbox Series too. System OS and Game OS.

It is slower, especially if you’re in the Game OS and have to make cross VM calls to the system OS. It does give them an extra level of protection though, and is likely the reason they haven’t been jailbroken while Switch and PS4/5 have.

darthv72940d ago

@crazy, windows is the user interface for consumers and businesses. MS themselves has used linux based systems for various other things, including their cloud based blade servers. They arent above using linux where it fits, they are even invested in its future development.
