Octopath Traveler is a beautiful but repetitive old school rpg love letter.
Square Enix's Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 reveals new physical release for Nintendo Switch with both games on one cartridge - pre-order here.
I actually thought this was an April Fools when I heard about it a couple of days ago.
Square Enix hosting big Nintendo Switch eShop sale with lowest prices for Octopath Traveler, Romancing SaGa 2 remake, and more.
"Today, Square Enix® announced that "OCTOPATH TRAVELER" is now available to purchase for the PlayStation®5 (PS5®) and PlayStation®4 (PS4®) consoles and "OCTOPATH TRAVLER II" is now available for the first time on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, meaning that the award-winning RPG series is now available to play across all current console platforms and PC (Windows PC and STEAM®)." - Square Enix.
This game is less about grinding and much more about using the different classes well enough with each other. The interplay of the right skills and classes on the right characters is paramount. Something that seems impossible will become easy with the right tactics, especially late game with the advanced classes on the right characters.
Also, *HUGE SPOILERS* for this next part
All the stories do actually connect in the true ending. I also love how the game starts and ends with the first character you meet and help when setting out.
Altogether was an ok game, nothing more. its really sad to see how far the JRPG has fallen the last two generations.Bar Persona 4 and 5 literally nothing made in the last 15 years can compare to classics like chrono trigger, final fantasys, FFT and Xenogears. Real shame.
One cardinal sin RPGs must avoid is making random battles tedious. There's so much they did right, but that sheer mistake makes the game feel like a chore.
I was thinking the other day about playing the first FF, but might play this one instead.
I look forward to playing this game and deciding for myself if it is a good game or another Bravely Default. Bravely Default was such a disappointment and after playing it I cannot figure out how a JRPG with no character development, no exploration, little loot, and a rehashed job system from Final Fantasy V could get such high praise. The bravely/default battle system was boring, since your actions were decided beforehand by whether it was a trash fight or a boss fight and had nothing to do with what your enemies were doing. I have no idea how reviewers could get so excited about taking 4 actions in a row.
I've never played a SaGa game yet even I can see that the main mechanic in Octopath Traveler is taken from the SaGa series. Why do most of the reviewers never mention that? I suppose "innovative" and "breath of fresh air" don't sound so good when one references the core mechanic being used previously.
