Why I stopped playing Octopath TRAVELER (Octopath Traveler review) - Galaxy of Geek

Octopath Traveler is a beautiful but repetitive old school rpg love letter.

This game is less about grinding and much more about using the different classes well enough with each other. The interplay of the right skills and classes on the right characters is paramount. Something that seems impossible will become easy with the right tactics, especially late game with the advanced classes on the right characters.

Also, *HUGE SPOILERS* for this next part

All the stories do actually connect in the true ending. I also love how the game starts and ends with the first character you meet and help when setting out.

85hrs in before I had to pause it for bit. What a massive game. Epic through and through. I loved the oldschool design and unique character combat

Finished all main missions at around 85h. It's an awesome game, been a while since I played something so much entertaining as this game (for oldschool lovers).

Altogether was an ok game, nothing more. its really sad to see how far the JRPG has fallen the last two generations.Bar Persona 4 and 5 literally nothing made in the last 15 years can compare to classics like chrono trigger, final fantasys, FFT and Xenogears. Real shame.

Tapani2304d ago

You are absolutely right.

I do want to defend some games that got really close, though. Shin Megami Tensei III, Strange Journey Redux, IV and IV Final, plus Digital Devil Saga I and II were really good, also Shadow Hearts I-III were classics, Xenosaga and FFXII were up there, but it didn't realize its full potential due to development dragging out and people burning out. The only game recently that game me some real vibes was Nier:Automata, and to be honest Drakengard III (story scenes were really good, most even better than Nier:Automata) also gave me something new to think about, but the gameplay was just... awful.

Persona 5 left an impact and I love the soundtrack, but it was too flawed a masterpiece for me (pacing is horrid, too much useless dialog which you are too scared to skip to miss something, too much teenage angst instead of adult contents.) To be fair, I played Persona 5 in Japanese, and I had to use dictionary quite often due to the slang and political and legislation related words, so that took some of the enjoyment out. However, the writing and voices in Persona 5 were really good in Japanese (even my Japanese wife said that they used the top notch voice actors/actresses), while the translation and voices are horrible in English.

Also, I have to mention that Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and most likely Sekiro are JRPGs (not in the traditional sense, but hey they are slower and deeper than FFXV in their stat system and equipment, story etc.) and those have been true classics to me all.

So there's hope! :)

FF12 was mediocre trash, it got a 7.5 userscore on metacritic for a reason. It was the first time in the series they couldnt give a shit about the story, the story was mediocre at best. It's character's werent even that great only Basch and Balthier were carrying it, not to mention the MMO gameplay and the weakest music in the series.

jaycptza2304d ago

Persona 5 a game about teenagers had tp much Teenage angst? You realise why that sounds silly right?

SegaSaturn6692304d ago

One cardinal sin RPGs must avoid is making random battles tedious. There's so much they did right, but that sheer mistake makes the game feel like a chore.

Segata2304d ago

If you don't run they happen less frequent.

nommers2304d ago

If you don’t run the game just takes longer to get through giving you the illusion of less encounters. But who in their right mind isn’t going to run?

william_cade2304d ago

I was thinking the other day about playing the first FF, but might play this one instead.

I look forward to playing this game and deciding for myself if it is a good game or another Bravely Default. Bravely Default was such a disappointment and after playing it I cannot figure out how a JRPG with no character development, no exploration, little loot, and a rehashed job system from Final Fantasy V could get such high praise. The bravely/default battle system was boring, since your actions were decided beforehand by whether it was a trash fight or a boss fight and had nothing to do with what your enemies were doing. I have no idea how reviewers could get so excited about taking 4 actions in a row.

I've never played a SaGa game yet even I can see that the main mechanic in Octopath Traveler is taken from the SaGa series. Why do most of the reviewers never mention that? I suppose "innovative" and "breath of fresh air" don't sound so good when one references the core mechanic being used previously.

Saga Frontier I and II are classics, beautiful and meaningful games in the genre. They had a bit of a loose structure, but it gets tied together towards the end and it is actually a bit more fun that way too. Kind of like an open-world 2D RPG. The music and stories were pretty good, too. I'd suspect they are much better than Octopath Traveler.

Segata2304d ago

Aquire made this. Not the same studio. They just share a producer. OT is fantastic and I say this as someone who hated BD.

Gameseeker_Frampt2303d ago

Yeah, it is the same producer that has me worried but glad to hear that you enjoyed Octopath Traveler after not liking Bravely Default. I bought OT on Black Friday and now just need time to play it.
