Video game sci-fi is falling far behind, today’s sci-fi literature is flooded with creativity whilst video games stagnate. What can the industry do to catch up?
It is true that more interesting narratives could really bring gaming to the next level. While reading the article, first thing I thought of was Horizon Zero Dawn. It follows similar story and game ideas but the execution about the fall and rise of man was excellent. I did think that when the game was first announced and seeing some of the mecha, that it would turn out in the end that the world of Killzone that Guerilla Games created, specifically Vecta, was destroyed by a Helgan final solution: their mecha and artificial intelligence. But I guess they decided to go their own route which is fine. Since it is always used as a base for other shows, movies, literature, etc, I would like to see a more fleshed out version of Ghost in the Shell brought back to gaming. I still have and love the PS2 game, but it was more run and gun than narrative. https://youtu.be/rozsc05Ix3... https://youtu.be/a7Es5-E4nD... https://youtu.be/Y5wLq1NCgY... Ghost is so deep in its thought provoking ideas and exudes sci-fi from the Manga, movies, Stand Alone Complex and Arise that a next Gen game would blow gamers away in story and still be perfect for game play. They could even make the characters look like the Arise actors from the stage play http://wiki.tvnihon.com/wik... https://sgcafe.com/2015/10/... Just look at Daisuke Aramaki. That's as close as you can get. That's my vote for a first thought provoking game on next generation hardware.
Also, forgot two other types of stories I'd like to see which is a 1984 or Fahrenheit 451 type story which was the basis for Equilibrium. Maybe even flip it that you're the oppressor destroying lives, destroying thought and personal belongings and later on in the game, you become hunted for free thought and must save freedom and choice.
