Is Resident Evil 2 Metroidvania an Accurate Comparison?

After playing through the excellent horror remake, it's time to make a Resident Evil 2 Metroidvania comparison.

A MetroidVania has to be 2d durrr, otherwise most games would be metroidvanias, casper on the ps1 would be a metroidvania going by this logic.

AnthonyDavis1904d ago

Even as a 3D metroidvania it’s not similar. You’re basically need keys to open doors. In Metroidvanias you need new powers to do certain things that include more than just doors.

NapalmSanctuary1904d ago

@Anthony The differences between keys and powers, in this context, is negligible. The point of relevance is that you have to explore to find it, then figure out how and where to use it to progress.

MaxiPower901903d ago

dark chambers on the atari in the 70s haf you collecting keys to progress to the next areas. the term was coined for the similar gameplay in the 2d metroids and castlevanias after SOTN.

hell metroid prime isnt even a metroid vania so no your waaaay off just lile this article.

NapalmSanctuary1903d ago

"dark chambers on the Atari in the 70s had you collecting keys to progress to the next areas."

Maybe it did (don't know, haven't played it) but it didn't popularize the progression style. Wouldn't make it any less metroidvania if its consistent with the style.

MaxiPower901903d ago

sorry but your not doing a good job convincing me. by your logic zelda is a metroidvania infact if keys and powers are interchangeable then surely mario 64s stars could be considered keys so that too is a metroidvania game going by your own logic. two of which games are waaaaaaaay more popular than any metroid or castlevania game has ever been, thus surely this concept that metroid popularised the concept is farfetched. ill say it again. it has.to be 2d like shadow complex or that axiom verge or that guacamelle.

NapalmSanctuary1902d ago

The only Zelda (besides BoTW), & Super Marios I have really played were the first ones when I was a kid and I didn't get far in the original Zelda cause I didn't understand the gameplay at the time, so I really couldn't definitively say but aren't the different areas in Mario 64 other places entirely? In Metroid, Super Metroid, Castlevania: SoTN, Classic RE, Batman Arkham Asylum, System Shock, Bloodborne etc. The entirety of the map (with the exception of the small opening location in Super Metroid) is a single geographical location or a series of adjacent, physically connected locations where full access is gained by exploration, finding something, gaining abilities and/or puzzle solving... not a set of disconnected geographical areas that you have to warp to. That's THE MAIN THING that gives a game that metroidvania feel. Even gating the definition by method of unlocking paths feels a bit too restrictive cause ultimately its the level design that truly distinguishes metroidvania from everything else, then and now. More specifically, the kind of level design that relies on familiarity through repetition to achieve progression.

So RE 2 is the combination of two games that are nothing like resident evil in gameplay, style, setting or content? What a joke.

LightofDarkness1904d ago (Edited 1904d ago )

Metroidvania quite simply means "in a style that closely resembles classic Metroid and Castlevania games."

Being a 2D platformer is chief among those traits. So no.

There are some similarities, but these are much higher level abstractions that most other games share. Adventure games and survival horror games all feature gated hub worlds with item-based progression systems.

NapalmSanctuary1904d ago

Metroidvania refers to a specific level/game progression style. The term has been used for a long time to describe games like classic RE, System Shock, Alone in The Dark etc . The devs even said they are maintaining its "metroidvania style of gameplay".

FTLmaster1904d ago

I dunno. Is Silent Hill a Metroidvania? No. No it's not.

Vanfernal1904d ago

No. It's survival horror. It coined the term for the genre. It's the embodiment of what the genre entails. It's the quintessential example of what survival horror is. You can draw as many parallels as you like, but that doesn't make it accurate. That's like saying RE2 is 3rd person, you have an over the shoulder view, you run and shoot weapons... RE2 is a 3rd person shooter!!!

NapalmSanctuary1904d ago (Edited 1904d ago )

"No. It's survival horror."

The two are not mutually exclusive. Metroidvania level/game progression is actually a hallmark of early survival horror.

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

Dudeson35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.

REmake vs. Resident Evil 2: Which Remake Template is Better?

REmake kept the original style adding new flavour and graphics, Resident Evil 2 is a complete modernisation. Which remake style is superior?

TheBrainZ66d ago

The GameCube remake was stunning for its time but the new modernisation efforts are breathing some much-needed life into the older games.

kevco3366d ago

I loved the GC remake back in 2000-whatever. But I tried replaying it recently and just couldn't deal with the door loading sequences.

Have I been spoilt by modern games? Probably.

Neonridr66d ago

tank controls just don't work in this day and age.

Babadook765d ago

I think Tomb Raider still works but RE I'm not sure.

Neonridr65d ago

@Babadook7 - imagine an updated Resident Evil or Tomb Raider with tank controls? you can't walk and turn at the same time. It would be ridiculous to play.

__y2jb66d ago

Both are fantastic but the old style controls and the half way house attempt to modernize them in remake both feel extremely dated now. Taking away your preference for the various settings and characters, the recent remakes are objectively better games.

rippermcrip66d ago

I think anyone voting for REmake is simply doing it out of nostalgia. No way a new young gamer is going to pick that over the new ones. I couldn't even get my son to play the game for more than an hour.

KyRo66d ago

Nope. REmake has a totally different vibe, feel and tension that the newer remakes can't replicate due to the camera angle. Yes the original fixed camera was used for technical reason but at the same time, they created a feeling of dread not knowing what was around the corner. You simply don't get that with a third person camera as great as the third person RE games are.

FYouDad66d ago

Depends what sort of experience you're looking for. If you enjoy the old fixed camera OG style then REmake is to me the pinnacle of the form. Incredible atmosphere, visual style and a fantastic revision of Resident Evil 1 with additions that feel completely seamless. Resident Evil 2 Remake in an excellent update (especially running with the IMO vastly superior original RE2 soundtrack) with the benefits of modern design but I still prefer the original game.. it didn't "overwrite" that experience in my mind the way REmake felt like it became the definitive RE1 experience.
