EA Believes Battlefield V’s Poor Sales Were Due To Single Player, No, No It Wasn’t

Yesterday Andrew Wilson said that focusing on Single Player and not Battle Royale is what ruined the sales of Battlefield V. Jake gives his opinion on why he thinks this is rubbish.

You can actually blame the single player for playing a part in the BFV failure though. It was the most pathetic excuse of a ww2 era campaign I've ever seen. Literally wrote heroes out of their own stories because they needed to be "inclusive". Really thought that after BF1 they were onto something for their single player experiences with the War Stories framework.

BF3 was literally straight up attempting to follow Black Ops footsteps and BF4 was just generic and uninspired. War Stories gameplay and level design isn't much better but they tried something interesting with the narrative and it was good for the most part. But of course they just couldn't help themselves and just flat out made up things to suit the current political climate.

At this point the BF single player portion is a huge waste of time.

they might actually be right, here. despite games like GoW, Spider-man, Horizon, BotW, Mario, TW3 etc, proving otherwise, the main difference between them and BF are those games have good to excellent campaigns while BF's campaigns haven't been good since BFBC2.

I think DICE lost their mojo in storytelling since the end of BFBC2. Maybe they are too busy tweaking the Frostbite engine and applying ray-tracing or whatever, they forgot to read a book or watch movies or something to inspire them to write a good story. but they aren't missing out on the news, apparently. that's what they are full SJW and LGBTQXYZ mode now. that's the only explanation

The single player in bf5 was based off of true story. They didn't try to force woman in there, they were telling that woman's story.
The real problem with bf5 isn't bf5, it's individuals like you that only know history through the trash they teach in school and from movies. What really happened in WW2 and where a lot of battles were fought and who fought in them is really surprising.
For instance other than pearl harbor was the us attached or included? Yes on a chain of islands in Alaska. Torpedo alley, of the Eastern sea board of the us. So woman and blacks fought in WW2 in other ways than history portrays. Instead of bashing early for having it in the game, maybe you and many, many others should learn the real history of the world. Or you could just play the game because it's a good game and not care about authenticity and realize that it's a video game and meant to be entertaining and engaging, not a history lesson

They released a game desperate to cash in on the Battle Royale fad, but didn't realise that the gap was already filled. Just having the SP game didn't cause it to underperform. Not having a BR mode didn't cause it to under perform.

EA, and DICE, just need to accept responsibility for their screw ups, instead of trying to deflect in a way that just hopes that investors will continue to support their ultimate goal of having nothing but service based, connected games, which they can monetize their customers with.

Was honestly the first BF i never thought twice about not buying. Was really the only MP games i liked, and the only EA series i'd pay for, but you lost me on both of those things EA. What about BF V’s bad marketing and terrible PR? The beta for BF V was pretty weak also. The game launched with a lack of content and some called it buggy. Mass Effect Andromeda would have sold bucketloads if they put more effort into it, and the story. It had potential, and they obviously set it up to be a multi-part game....likely a trilogy.

But, EA doesn't look at it's poor quality, or at least perceived poor quality, as the reason that it sold bad, they look at it as SP games aren't as in demand as they once were. A feeling that was echoed by Spencer, although he was more accurate with how he described it as being complicated.

That's how some of these big publishers think. And EA has thought this since last gen. It's why they aren't making as many big SP games anymore.

They don't think what can be successful, they think what can make them the most money. A modestly or very successful SP game isn't enough for them. The risk is too great, and they feel that MP is a cash cow. Even BFV is going to be a cash cow for them, because it still sold over 7 million copies, and people are playing it. But to them, they treat it as if that's what most people want, when it's not. In the meantime, they put all their eggs into one basket. The problem is, everyone else is using the same basket, and the market becomes oversaturated, and then you get a crash. Same thing that's happening in mobile right now. Sega and Square losing money on mobile isn't a rare occurance right now, and many mobile publishers or devs are seeing things drop off heavily. There is still money to be made, but it's being taken up more and more by fewer games, just like Fortnite is commanding most of the MP shooter market right now.

Honestly I just felt burnt out on the series, and after both Battlefield 4 and 1 had terrible launches I knew I wasn't going to pre-order, then I find out from others the state of the game at launch is even WORSE than I had predicted.
As a side note, I personally had no problem with the inclusion of the cyborg woman and other pushes for female inclusion. That didn't bother me in the slightest. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the game.. It was a solid effort, I just feel the first one pulled me in more with the story, animated cuts scenes and I felt the controls we're more precise and spot on. Also, getting into a fight was way more of a big deal, you mostly wanted to be on your way, the second one well, you can hold a machine gun if you want.

All I'm saying is the first nailed the concept of their reality better, this new age where nothing is safe and secure unless these brave parkour (messengers) not soldier fighters delivered everything physically and they were persecuted for it. It could be that I waited for so long nothing could cut it. I don't know dude, honestly I'm glad someone likes mirror's edge, that franchise clearly had so much potential, and it did not get the attention it deserved.

Unfortunately, for EA, they've spent too many years pissing off the gaming community, that just now saying that they're going to do better isn't going to work so well. If any investor actually hears this, realize that just getting a new guy that you hope can sell the idea of fleecing the customer isn't the right path. It hasn't worked. Well 3 &, to a certain extent, 4 had that wow factor in the visuals of the single player.
Seeing the marketplace demo of bf3 running was akin to seeing half life 2 on reveal for the 1st time. It was light years ahead of anything else.
They've lost that. It's kinda expected that a bf3 campaign will look the same each year now.
Imo, I'd keep the numbered entries to the series as a once in a generation thing. Players should anticipate a first look at a battlefield campaign and be blown away. Possibly even have a whole new engine each game.
Other bf entries during a generation cycle should be spin offs like Hardline.

To be fair to Dice and a little against the author. There is not a lot they can do with the weapons. If they had been overly 'creative' with WWII weapons they would have been criticised for that as well.
It was not the game itself that was the issue, it was the poor PR that was the issue. Lack of content was not a problem for me as they had clearly indicated it would be added free over time. This helps keep things fresh and interesting, admittedly they could speed up the release of new maps.

if battlefield wants to regain its dignity they batter make a WW3 game with new weapons planes tanks missles even nukes...
now thats a game i would call "battlefield"

Screw EA I like single player games loved God of War, Spiderman was great, Red Dead 2 was awesome. EA is to full of them selves to admit they screwed up so they have to blame it on something or someone else.

EA continues to show it doesn't have a clue. Yes BR is successful. That doesn't mean we don't want an excellent single-player experience.

Sales were poor because EA had a bad public image behind their loot crate policies and they pissed gamers off by saying Don't like it don't buy it.
