PSN generated more revenue than both Microsoft's gaming division & Nintendo as a whole

In 2018, PlayStation Network produced higher revenue than Microsoft's whole gaming division & Nintendo as a whole. It's absolutely insane just how big PSN has become for Sony.

So for the calendar year 2018 (using the current conversion rates), Microsoft’s gaming division made $11.5 billion, Nintendo made $9.17 billion, & PSN made $12.5 billion.

OMG! That's crazy! I guess next gen we can expect Sony to capitalize on that, I just hope it doesn't lead to a digital only next gen.

PS4 and PSN are a monster. I can only imagine how the service will grow when PS5 launches. Hopefully Sony continues to push the service forward.

Exciting times ahead.

darthv722322d ago

Sony has had the best overall YoY increase and it looks like the other two had successful YoY growth as well. Good job all around. It really shows that to make money you got to spend money.

_SilverHawk_2322d ago (Edited 2322d ago )

Well Sony ps4 is a lot better than those other console because they are lacking in ways the PlayStation isn't.

The switch barely has games as well as the Xbox one. The switch lacks third party games but has more exclusive Nintendo games and Xbox lacks exclusive games but has a lot of third party games. 80 percent of switch games are old games and there'll be a lot more coming to the system. A lot of the fans want more old games than actual new games

The ps4 has a lot of exclusive games and third party games. Majority of games on the switch are old games remade for the system. I wonder what Nintendo will do when switch 2 is out by the time metroid 4 is done because remaking old games are keeping switch relevant so will they be remaking the remade games on switch for the switch 2. I know switch 2 won't be powerful to play games meant for ps5

SuperSonic912322d ago

PS4 is the second largest gaming platform in the universe in terms of revenue.

Second only to the Chinese mega tech giant Tencent Holdings.
Stats: https://venturebeat.com/201...
This is why China is very careful and strict with PS4 making it big in China.

PS4 is so successful Jack Tretton, Kaz Hiarai, and Andrew House was given permission to retire. They are all set to sit and relax after moving the PS4 rock.

PS4 is the Undisputed King of Console Gaming.

bluefox7552322d ago

As long as they don't forget what brought them this success, we should be alright.

notachance2322d ago

I'm actually more interested in how MS gaming division had bigger revenue than Nintendo, considering how great Nintendo sales in 2018 is, both on software and hardware division.

Guess those gamepass and XBL really helped a lot.

TheColbertinator2322d ago

Yes. MS really nails down online revenue sources from MTs, subscriptions and big promotion at retail.

SuperSonic912322d ago

That is because Nintendo fans comes to class discussion without doing their homework first. They take the sensational reports by Mat Pischela at face value.
So when the dust settles they are like "Nani!?" What happened? I thought we won.
LoL
Nintodds should never underestimate MS when Nintendo is but a toe nail compared to MS.
They must stop living this miserable fanboy life.

RauLeCreuset2322d ago

Xbox Live and 3rd party sales. Switch may be on the verge of overtaking Xbox, but Xbox still has more systems sold, at the moment. Xbox also has better 3rd party support to make money from.

nucky642322d ago

sony isn't that misinformed to go digital-only.

Father__Merrin2322d ago

Livingthedream2322d ago

Most of the developed world with fast and reliable internet is. PC is already there, consoles have been taking strides in that direction, and will only be a matter of time before it's the norm.

indysurfn2321d ago (Edited 2321d ago )

@livingthedream Consoles have two things going for them that PC never had. You could buy a PC game and it not work with your setup. To stop refunds from the few big retailers that had a return policy, digital only was the savior of the PC publisher. Consoles rarely have this problem. And the few times they did Amazon, and others lead the charge to a refund for digital (remember all platforms say no return for digital).

The other is MOST CONSOLE people want, and demand to be able to trade in their games to help them buy another one. They know that buying a digital game will take away their ownership rights which is stated, and they will not be able to sell it. EVER. I know I avoid digital for AAA games because guess what? 10 years from now I will want to be able to play trails of cold steel. And unless you've been hiding under a rock servers stop 2-6 years on average after games are released.

Try to go back and play Socom online n your ps2. Now imagine if it was a digital online only game. It will say 'unable to reach server'.

EA shut one down after ONE year.

rainslacker2322d ago

Considering they also made tons of money off physical sales, I doubt we'll see a digital only next gen from Sony.

Bronxs152322d ago

the crazy part is the article could have also read "PSN generated more revenue than both Microsoft's gaming division & Nintendo as a whole, but microsoft generated more revenue than sony and nintendo combined" and still be accurate.

jznrpg2322d ago

This is about gaming not windows office subscriptions

DarXyde2322d ago

Highly doubtful.

Sony knows that's not a popular decision.

Muzikguy2322d ago

WOW! What I take from this is how MS really isn't that far behind considering how many "less" consoles are sold. Interesting

I think all talks of Microsoft comming back, can be laid to bed now.

Sony put out the games. As they have for ps2. 3 & 4. And the gamers spoke. They voted with their feet and for all the Fan Boy talk on either side, there really wasn't a war at all. Its demolished everything in its path and doesn't even show signs of slowing down even this late into the generation.

JackBNimble2322d ago

That doesn't mean MS isn't or can't be successful as Well.

bluefox7552322d ago

Sure, it's a big market. They can stay in last place indefinitely while still making a profit, and it seems like they are perfectly content with this.

twiggytree122322d ago

He never said they weren’t successful.

BehindTheRows2322d ago

He never said they couldn't.

rainslacker2322d ago

True. But MS likes to compete directly with Sony, often saying how they're better, so the comparisons are obviously going to go with whoever is doing better. If Spencer didn't interject Xbox into the success that Sony has, then maybe people wouldn't be quite as adament about saying how MS isn't doing as well.

Microsoft are not coming back this Gen but next gen anything can happen. Sony has hopefully learned from its mistakes from the past and won’t let success get to them. PS2 is arguably the best console around but because of that the launch of the PS3 was weak. I’m hoping that Sony Keep the momentum up from the latter half of the PS3 gen all the way to the PS5. Microsoft have fallen so far this Gen that the only way they can go is up. Honestly I’m hoping for more healthy competition it’s never a bad thing to have more great games regardless of what system they’re for.

jznrpg2322d ago (Edited 2322d ago )

MS crapped on too many people too many times. Sure some people don’t mind being crapped on but the majority remember the smell and they don’t like it so they will stay away from MS and their ....

RauLeCreuset2321d ago

Here's the problem with that. Anything can happen, but let's look at some real obstacles to that particular scenario happening. The go to reference to justify this line of reasoning is the PS2, as you have done. The PS3 suffered from launching a year later than Xbox, at a higher price, being difficult to develop for, and having a number of former 3rd party exclusives go multiplat while Xbox Live was a compelling reason for current 360 owners to stay Xbox and for their friends to join them. Those particulars have been overshadowed by this popular, revisionist narrative, which recasts Sony as having been arrogant, to engage in tenuous fearmongering that PS success is a portent of PS failure the following gen.

How likely is it the PS3 scenario repeats itself? Sony isn't likely to launch later, but Xbox beating them to the punch this time wouldn't have the same impact due to Xbox having just put out new hardware not long ago with the X, and other reasons I'll segue into. All indications are the PS5, like the PS4, will be developer friendly. I expect the price to be comparable to the competition. (Not only was PS3 priced higher, but likely suffered from less time on the market prior to the recession than Xbox.)

It's hard to look back on PS3 and think they had an exclusives problem (especially since it didn't take them until the next gen or longer to fix), but those 3rd party exclusives that went multiplat were a blow early on. The PS3 answered the loss of those 3rd party exclusives by pumping out 1st party exclusives. 1st party exclusives aren't at risk of going multiplat, so there's no danger of that next gen.

Ironically, it's going to be online services that are going to work against Xbox next gen. We are no longer dealing with gens in which everything is reset and up for grabs at the start of a new one. Gamers are now invested in online networks. Anyone thinking of jumping ship now has their friends list, digital purchases, PS+ or IGC games, etc. to consider. Not enough focus is placed on how badly MS messed up this gen in losing so many to PS4. It's not as easy to lose so many people invested in your product as those who jumped from 360 to PS4, and it's not going to be easy to get them back now that they're invested in PSN.

So, yeah. Anything can happen. I just don't see it happening.

Sunny_D2321d ago

He probably didn’t count it cause at the time PS1 had mostly 3rd party exclusives since they had just come out.

KillBill2322d ago

How so? PlayStation has a user base twice that of Microsoft and only brought in $12.5 billion to Micro\soft's 11.5 billion. Looks to me like what Microsoft is doing is earning them a ton of money with half the user base. So obviously they are doing something right to have their user base so invested compared to PlayStation.

I mean if you are going to look at the numbers then look at them for what they are really showing.

MajorLazer2322d ago (Edited 2322d ago )

Did you even read? PSN, not PS as a whole made more revenue than MS's entire gaming division and Nintendo as an entire company. Just PSN. Remember, "if you are going to look at the numbers then look at them for what they are really showing."

Deathdeliverer2321d ago

fishaz7802322d ago

Sunny_D2321d ago (Edited 2321d ago )

Is that why sony were able to dominate atleast 2 gens in row? Or even Nintendo back in the 80’s?

Malacath2321d ago (Edited 2321d ago )

Considering PSN made only $1 billion more when it sold around twice as many consoles you can't say MS are not successful.

They are clearly the most successful of the two when it comes to digital sales per each console sold

shiva12321d ago

Really... Did you see the numbers... Psn is with 12.5 having over 90 mil units and xbox is with 11.5 with 40 mil units.... All the 90 mil units grossed an additional 1bn. If xbox had 90 mil units it would have got close to 20 bn for sure

RauLeCreuset2321d ago (Edited 2321d ago )

Some of you are just coming here and posting without properly reading the headline, blurb, post, or numerous comments correcting like minded people who made the same mistake as you. The PlayStation Network's $12.5 billion beat out the ENTIRE Microsoft gaming division's $11.5 billion.

Crazy to see how PSN makes more revenue than Xbox as a whole, yet you don’t see Sony talk on and on about services as Microsoft tends to do these days.

Sony just continues producing quality software as well as garnering the most third party support while consumers also just naturally buy into the services that PSN provides. For that this company earns my eternal respect.

It’s no wonder Nintendo also felt prompted to get a subscription service of their own, but their service and everything it offers still feels underwhelming.

ArchangelMike2322d ago

Exactly, maybe Sony should start publishing how many gaming hours players have logged on PSN, or how many zombie shave been killed in RE2 - I wonder what MS would have to brag about then?

Show - don't tell, has been Sony's strategy and it has been more than successful, I hope they continue in that regard going into next-gen with quality all round.

rainslacker2322d ago (Edited 2322d ago )

Think they did that on those end of year metric things you could create for your play time on PS. I recall how many times Kratos died, and number of miles driven in GT:Sport in mine. I also believe there was a total number of hours played by all players. I think it was randomly generated for that, because others have shown things that had different stats. Would be neat if someone could put them all in one place. Not so neat would be if Sony made a press release about it as if it was a big deal.

Unfortunately, not state on how many enemies were killed in GOW. Sony is too skered to release that number apparently.

With it's light weight version of windows, ergonomic controls, gaming performance, and open system with multiple store launchers, it may be the best handheld on the market. This device is more pro consumer instead of a handheld that just plays Xbox games.

If my cash wasn't so tight this year I would be looking to pick up one at or around launch and I have no issues recommending it to any gamer as long as it is within their price range.

PapaBop2d ago

Pro consumer? Have you seen the rumoured price for it? At that price and using an LCD panel, pro consumer is not the words I'd use to describe it.

DivineHand1252d ago

So for you if it had an OLED screen but stay in a closed walled off software ecosystem, that would be pro consumer?

This is for the people who want an ergonomic handheld with as much power they could possibly get without compromising the battery life. It also gives you the ability to connect to your own display or an external GPU for those with the budget. What I love about it the most is that you have multiple competing store fronts so you can shop around for the best prices for your games.

BeHunted2d ago

Agree to disagree. This would open up a new era of Windows Handheld gaming devices: a cut down version of Windows with no bloatware, with hundreds of gaming clients.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

"cut down version of Windows without bloatware"
No such thing exists. Temper your expectations... Windows launching straight into the Xbox app.

mkis0072d ago

It doesn't play all xbox games though. It plays pc games, meaning if you don't have play anywhere titles, you have to buy them again.

DivineHand1252d ago

Right now that is a small inconvenience as the play anywhere program is not perfect.

You have to consider that it is offering something that no one else is doing for a large number of titles. That small nitpick should not count against this device and we as gamers should support moves like this.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

Would you still consider this pro consumer if you learned this is just MS' way of telling you there won't be any more consoles, just PCs?

DivineHand1251d 20h ago

If it means I won't have to pay any subscription fees for online gaming I would say yes to that.

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv723d ago (Edited 3d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX3d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK3d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog3d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).
