Digital Foundry stated that the PS4 Pro Version when defaulted to 1080p is the best version to play.

Neonridr1937d ago

yes because it offers a slightly more stable framerate than the One X version which is running at 1440p. Guess it depends on if you want a few more frames or better resolution.

darthv721936d ago

sounds like the X is best if you want both higher res clarity as well as close to target frame rate. If you want to sacrifice one for the other then the Pro is the way to go.

Eonjay1936d ago

No this is a case where because of vanity, the Pro has the best running version. If they gave the Xbox the ability to run 1080p, it would be the smoothest. In the PC world you can do this. And, the stable mode is a complete farce.

xRacer74x1936d ago

I went with the X. To me 1440p is still a big leap from 1080p. It has a few hiccups at 1440p but still way better than going back to what seems like an ancient 1080p.

OpenGL1935d ago

If you want to talk about ancient look no further than the regular Xbox One... 720p

Neonridr1935d ago

@OpenGL - sure, I guess. But that's not what the main topic of discussion is here.

Babadook71935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

Pro wins the most frame rate competitions with the X. (I get downvoted each time I say it, and I say it a lot, cause it happens a lot) X does win more 'overall' head to heads obviously. But to some gamers frame rate stability is the first priority.

Teflon021935d ago

Few more. Pro at 10980p was basically a locked 60 while xbox one x is like 40 to 50. It's a big difference

Neonridr1935d ago

@Babadook - The only reason the Pro is more stable is usually down to the game being rendered at a lower resolution. Devs are obviously trying to push the highest resolution possible with the One X.

@Teflon02- it's not locked.. read the report. it says it stays closer to 60. That being said, if the One X had the ability to do 1080p only it would be 100% locked in. The One X is pushing a million and a half more pixels each frame.. don't forget that.

rainslacker1935d ago

Graphics of this game don't benefit much from higher resolutions IMO. Anime or cell shaded in general tends to look better when the graphics aren't as sharp, and 1080 should be good enough to remove most of the jaggies.

About the only thing you might get more out of with Xbox is better lighting, which in itself doesn't always compliment cell shaded art styles. Just looking at the thumbnail. the softer blend in Sora's face looks unnatural for anime, which tends to have more single colors to harder transitions. but in terms of lighting, it does appear that the X1X produced a better look due to lighting.

EddieNX 1937d ago

Nah the X is the best version. A few unnoticeable dips here and there doesn't change the fact it's much higher resolution.

Eonjay1936d ago

1440P isn't earth shattering. And it does not make up for the solid 60 that you get on Pro at 1080p. Thats how I am playing it. It looks fine on my 4K TV. The Pro at 1296p is pretty smooth but going to 1080p is so much better. I don't miss the res boost at all. The X is a similar situation. I will take 60FPS over 1440p

Neonridr1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

@Eonjay - but you don't get a solid 60 on the Pro even at 1080p. DF just said that at 1080p the Pro stays closer to the 60 mark, but it isn't solid 60, don't fool yourself. Of course it looks fine to you, that's what you have to tell yourself. You don't have the option to see the game at 1440p on the Pro, so naturally you will say it isn't anything special.

1440p displays over 1.6 million more pixels than 1080p which is an additional 77% of the pixel count found in a 1080p display. You can tell yourself that you can't see a difference, but I assure you there is a difference.

Jin_Sakai1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

@Neonridr

“1440p displays over 1.6 million more pixels than 1080p“

Do pixels make the gameplay any better? No they don’t. A nearly locked 60fps does though. Xbox One X hovers around 50 to 60fps.

Neonridr1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

@Jin_Sakai - agree with what you are saying, but a framerate that fluctuates between 50-60 isn't going to be extremely jarring or anything. Not to the same degree that say 25-30 would be.

and no, more pixels don't make a game better. But it certainly makes it prettier. I would understand if the Pro was offering a locked 60 but it isn't. It still has dips. Far fewer than the One X does, but the One X is also pushing that many more pixels per frame too..

SierraGuy1935d ago

I like the most fluid experience.

My eyes notice those "few dips here and there" and so does my controller.

rainslacker1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

My conclusion.

Xbox fan boys are going to claim up and down that X1X is the best version of the game, and is the only way to play it.

Sony fan boys are going to say the PS4 version is better, or at least perfectly fine because of whatever metric may favor them according to DF....which you'll notice isn't gamingbolt, because no Sony fan respects gamingbolt, especially for comparisons, or for things that Hellpoint dev says.

Me, I don't care. Game looks great at 1080 on the PS4P. And to me, shaper images from higher resolutions don't work well in cell-shaded style artwork, which are naturally softer anyhow. Jaggies are what ruins cell shading, and at 1080, jaggies aren't going to be much more pronounced, if at all, compared to 1440. I play a lot of Japanese anime games, and the ones that push higher resolutions with that style, tend to look off.

Babadook71935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

You will notice the missing 10 frames a second far sooner than you will notice the 40% sharper image. DF is right that the Pro 60 FPS mode wins this hands down.

Nyxus1937d ago

Yep, they did.

"The performance range is in the same 50-60fps window as Xbox One X, but the difference is that the Pro locks to the top end much more consistently. In theory, an Xbox One X version running on a FreeSync display may deliver a smoother, higher resolution presentation overall, but for standard screens, I think it's the PS4 Pro version that runs and plays best."

https://www.eurogamer.net/a...

darthv721936d ago

... when you run it at 1080p.

I'm curious if anyone with an X and only using a 1080p screen would see the same results? All we usually hear about is people using 4k but not everyone uses 4k sets. Hell... I still have a 720p set in one of my rooms. would plugging a pro into a 720p yield even better results by doing that trick they described?

Neonridr1936d ago

so when is 50+ fps @ 1440p unacceptable? I would gladly take a few frames here and there, probably which will go for the most part unnoticed, to get a better screen presentation. If the Xbox One X had received a 1080p option it would have been hard locked at 60fps, with zero dips.

Nyxus1936d ago

@ Neonridr: who said anything about unacceptable? Digital Foundry simply stated that the PS4 Pro version is the best version to play. People can disagree all day long, but that's what they said.

Kribwalker1936d ago

“Curiously, while the standard PS4 and Xbox One have similar outputs here, it seems to be the Microsoft machine that has a small advantage in testing like-for-like scenes. Also surprising is the fact that the PS4 Pro actually runs slower than both of them, and noticeably so. At the top of the pile sits Xbox One X, handing in its native 1440p presentation mostly in 50-60fps territory.“

So if the pro was running as intended it’s frame rate are less then that of the base consoles (at a lower resolution then the Onex as well) but if you want to force the pro to playin 1080p then you get a closer to 60fps.

So if FPS was your go to then the Pro is where to play, but if you want better image quality and almost the same FPS play on the X.

Since it’s not a online multiplayer game i’m gonna go with better image

darthv721936d ago

"Digital Foundry simply stated that the PS4 Pro version is the best version to play." but that is not entirely true. It was only in a certain context that it was true. How many people are going to do what they suggest in order to get there?

for open the package, insert disc and play, the X was the best because it required no tweaks and managed a higher res as well as closer to target frame rate. Square is likely going to have some patches that improve things for all platforms but as of right now the X is the best overall while the Pro is the best if you limit it to 1080p.

Neonridr1936d ago

strangely enough, why is it that that Pro users get a 1080p option but the One X users don't?

Kribwalker1936d ago

@neon
You have to go to the settings on the ps4 itself and change it to 1080p on the system to force the game to play in 1080p mode on the ps4. it’s in the system settings and nothing to do with the game

Neonridr1936d ago

@Krib - ahh fair enough.. I guess this is the mode on the Pro that you turn on in the settings for more stable performance.

TheUndertaker851936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

From the same story. Puts Xbox One X at the “top of the pile”.

Razzer1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

"However, there is a further dimension to the story and actually, as a Kingdom Hearts fan, it's the PS4 Pro version I'll be playing through to completion. "

There you go. Guess the author put the PS4 Pro version on the top of his "pile".

--Onilink--1935d ago

@Neonridr

The X will run at 1080p when not on a 4K screen, however by default the system will still render at the highest possible resolution and so in the end it gets a supersampled 1080p image. Which is good for people wanting to enjoy the best possible 1080p image if they dont have a 4k screen, but then it also means that its still rendering at the maximum capacity and cannot see improvements on framerate.

So other than an option on the game itself to set the resolution to 1080p, its not possible on the X.

Still, FFXV launched with bad performance too on all consoles, im guessing in a month or so all the different modes will be in a much better state.

rainslacker1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

@Darth

"How many people are going to do what they suggest in order to get there?"

It's not a tweak nor is it time consuming to implement. Its easy enough to switch from the PS4 settings menu....although maybe an ingame switch is there. I didn't look. I always do resolution switches through the system menu if I ever do them.

But, the vast majority of gamers don't care about this stuff.

I played it last night, and it was fine. Didn't notice any dips, nor was my game play experience hamped in any way that I felt I need to run out and get an X1X to play this game. The game doesn't look significantly better on the X1X, and in some ways, it doesn't do the cell shading justice. That may be because I prefer the less nuanced shading they did in the older games, and still prefer Disney's old style of art, over their new CGI way of doing things, which makes everything look like crap. That's one thing the old games really got right. It made the Disney worlds look good. Even for the technology at the time which couldn't handle the old style of cell shading all that great, it didn't try to make them look like every other Square FF game when FF isn't trying to be all emo. It captured the magic of Disney. This game, with how it looks on both systems, doesn't do that, regardless of the resolution. But to this end, I feel PS4P is actually a bit closer, because it has a softer look at 1080.

The frame rate is meaningless to me, because so long as it stays above 30, I'm fine.

TheUndertaker851934d ago (Edited 1934d ago )

@Razzer: Except the author, in context and literally in black and white labels the Xbox One X version as “At the top of the pile”.

There is absolutely no reference to PS4 or any variation of PS4 version being put there short of your insinuation.

Ah, Digital foundry are legit again and no longer paid by MS i guess

Nyxus1936d ago

I never said that. But at the same time, it seems like Xbox fans suddenly don't want to believe DF anymore.

TheUndertaker851936d ago

@Nyxus: I think people don’t want to believe a half argument with the other half instantly wrote off. Arguments that Digital Foundry also put out. In the same story.

ZeroX98761936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

I started completing the whole series from the very beginning. Since I can only do that on Sony's console, the platform choice was easy for me.

But performance wise the X should have the edge over the Pro, I mean you pay more, you get more, just make sense.

Imortus_san1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

Go to Settings in the Xbox One X, turn off 4K textures and embrace the 60 frames at 1080p.

Fluttershy771935d ago

Why's that? Isn't the X one X more powerful?

Why are we still doing this? WHO CARES!!!!!!!! The differences are always minimal.

TheOpenWorlder1935d ago

Xbox One X is superior. But yeah

Elda1936d ago

Both have their good & bad.

King_Noctis1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

What’s the bad for the xbox One X?

CrimsonWing691936d ago

unstable frame rate, I'm gathering.

1936d ago
Razzer1935d ago

Or....read the article.

rainslacker1935d ago

Frame rate can go down to 50 instead of 60 with no way to switch to 1080p apparently.

Game looks fine on both systems. I doubt the vast majority of people are going to run out and buy the X1X because it has a slightly better version. Especially since the majority of people who like these games are probably already PS owners, and most likely still have the base hardware for the generation anyways.

Just buy the game for the system you have. It runs and plays fine on all systems. It looks about the same on all systems. The bickering over it is stupid and pointless, and just both sides trying to find a positive thing or two to puff up their console war feathers.

We've waited years for this game. I don't care if X1X plays it better. Amazon already delivered my PS4 version, and I'll be playing it this weekend.:)

I'll take a great game at 1080p over a dips at 4k. Even into the next gen. A solid framerate is something this generation introduced that I never want to be without.

Neonridr1935d ago

way to not read the story. Nothing is 4K here.

Playstation because its is real home.

Yeah...cause that's totally what we're talking about here. Hah

Final Fantasy XVI Has Finally Given Donald Duck A Worthy Opponent

For a long time, it's been widely accepted amongst Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts fans that Donald Duck is the most powerful mage ever to exist, mainly due to his use of the stupidly powerful Zettaflare spell towards the end of Kingdom Hearts 3. This spell is one step up from Teraflare, a spell which was used in Final Fantasy XIV that was so powerful that it completely wiped out the base game, giving the developers a canonical reason to let them bin everything and start again from scratch.

Now you're armed with this information, you can see how it was pretty surprising for Donald Duck of all characters to bust out Zettaflare and establish himself as the most powerful character in Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts lore. However, now that Final Fantasy XVI has arrived and delivered a whole new cast of characters, a new challenger has arrived to provide Donald with some much needed competition.

Final Fantasy's Strongest Canonical Magic User Is... Donald Duck?

Final Fantasy features many strong characters, but an unlikely character from Kingdom Hearts is able to cast the most powerful spell ever seen

gold_drake377d ago

that was pretty amazing, not gonna lie, i might have shed a tear or too, just cause of pure awesomeness.

he was already my favourite disney character and one of my favs from KH and then to see that amazing spell too. aah so good xD

Final Fantasy's strongest magic user is Donald Duck, who never appears in a final fantasy game.

This Kingdom Hearts Boss' Unpredictability Gave Me Sekiro Vibes

Kingdom Hearts is filled with otherworldly boss battles, but only one stands out like a phoenix dancing with ethereal grace across the night sky. Before we embark upon a discussion concerning Kingdom Hearts' exceptional boss battles, it may be prudent to first reflect on the evolution of the criteria for appraising video game bosses. This criterion has undergone a major metamorphosis over the past decade; one that owes much to the profound influence of From Software and its iconic Souls series.

"Yozora is much more than a grueling secret encounter; he is a reflection of what Kingdom Hearts' bosses should be"

No thank you. If every boss in Kingdom Hearts was like Yozora, the series would be unplayable. That's not to say that they shouldn't include such challenges, but making them fundamental to the game would be too much. And don't say that this is what the From Software games are, because Yozora is absolutely harder than most of the bosses in those games. He is waaay faster, has a ludicrous number of abilities (and does them in random order AND can chain most of them together), and punishes you severely if you make a mistake. On top of that, you have to survive this onslaught for a really long time because of how much health he has. It's borderline too much - for me at least. Still, it's a stunning battle.

OMNlPOTENT388d ago

I agree, while I do really enjoy the Yozora fight, I think it's far too difficult to be anything more than an optional boss. However, I do believe that there should be more bosses that are in the same weight and size class as Sora, as the majority of those in KH3 were the best fights. The giant heartless bosses just aren't as enjoyable.
