Colin Moriarty - 'EA Has Completely Botched Its Handling Of Star Wars IP'

It's hard not to agree with that statement. EA and the Star Wars IP has been anything but a success for both EA and Star Wars owner, Disney.

Spurg2287d ago

I can't comprehend what Disney saw in EA to make a deal with them. EA have all but tarnish the name of Star wars amongst gamers with needless microtransactions, not expanded the Star Wars story or lore and not created a single game that has made the Star wars name proud.

Araragifeels 2287d ago

EA never wanted the Star Wars license to begin with but Dice wanted to make a Star Wars game. At the time, Dice was a safe bet and Disney didn't see the issue until Star Wars Battlefront 2 which was too late.

Redlife2g2287d ago

Source please. I highly doubt that was the only reason why they wanted the license

UltraNova2286d ago

I seriously doubt EA of all publishers did not want the rights to film industry's biggest IP....

Atom6662287d ago

Between Bioware's continued work on Old Republic and EA's teams like DICE, it probably made a lot of sense on paper. Fast forward a few years, and look where we are. I agree with your points.

Like Colin has mentioned though, does Disney care enough at this point to do anything about it? Can they get out of the deal for less $ than it will cost them to stick it out?

DivoJones2287d ago

EA probably laid out their elaborate plans to extract every dollar from the license. Battlefront games that time out perfectly to movie releases, rife with loot boxes to boost the bottom line. Single-player game being developed under the supervision of Amy Hennig, Star Wars 1313, and the game they tried to spin those assets into. If they didn't add an 'escape clause' to the contract they made with EA, they deserve to miss out on the massive amounts of money they could have made.

uth112287d ago

Disney wanted nothing to do with game development.
one of their first moves was to axe Lucasarts. They just wanted to collect royalties on the license while other companies did the work

Dabigsiebowski2287d ago

@spurg Look at how Disney is handling Star Wars in general. This is not a surprise until they actually learn what it is they have on their hands. They don't see Star wars as the art that many people used to see it as. It's all about making cute animals and fart jokes to appease to the new age masses. It's about printing money and story and everything else are second hand.

Profchaos2287d ago

They transformed star wars from an event years in the making to a series of movies that release sometimes 6 months apart making it loose it's magic by oversaturation and poor content

Sophisticated_Chap2287d ago

You don't need to comprehend anything to understand that Disney is just as bad. They are milking all if their franchises, just like Activision does with Call of Duty. George Lucas selling Star Wars to Disney was the worst thing he ever did.

RememberThe3572287d ago

Excuse me, don't you dare undermine the massive destruction he laid down with episodes 1-3. That took work!

MajorLazer2286d ago

Disney are scum too. Just glad they haven't fucked up the MCU (yet)

kevnb2287d ago (Edited 2287d ago )

They saw money, nothing else really matters in their decision.

Sashamaz2287d ago

Disney is even worse than EA, they have destroyed star wars

Michiel19892287d ago

@spurg I cant comprehend it from a personal level either but when I look at it from a business perspective it makes a bit more sense. Disney had no studio making star wars games for them anymore, they were marketshopping for one and voila EA showed up. They know EA from games like madden, battlefield and Fifa which are probably one of the biggest game names for non-gamers. They look at the stock of EA and saw it was going up at a steady pace. Purely from a business standpoint that seems like a good deal for them. Also at the time they made the deal EA wasnt hated as much as currently.

and also lets not act like Disney is the way it was 25 years back. They have also become very greedy over the years and are not that likeable of a company anymore. Yeah they still some good movies, but they are also milking some other IP's at the same time.

-Foxtrot2287d ago

Even worse when they've said Battlefront II's single player story is CANON to the Star Wars Universe despite it being awfully written.

Yet they got rid of so many popular stories when Disney took over in the expanded Universe.

badz1492287d ago

it's raining today and it's totally not blue outside! you're FAKE NEWS!

Smokehouse2287d ago

Where the hell has he been? Seemed like one of the few gaming media types that had any sense.

eferreira2287d ago

He has like 3 different podcasts. They’re great too.

NecrumOddBoy2287d ago (Edited 2287d ago )

Colin's Last Stand is his new company and YouTube channel. He also has podcasts on Castbox:
Sacred Symbols - Playstation Podcast
Fireside Chats - Eclectic Interviews
Knockback - Retro Podcast

Colin is awesome. When those scumbags that Kinda Funny turned on him, I unsubscribed and followed Colin to his new channel. His Fireside chats are like Joe Rogan without all the fight/MMA interviews. He has a plethora of interesting guest. Sacred Symbols is an awesome weekly Playstation podcast that we lost when PS I Love You stopped. Also Knockback is a retro podcast he does with his brother Dagan (lead animator at Sesame) all ranging from games to childhood memories, to music, sports, cartoons, film and more. Just absolutely a walk back in time and if you know Colin everything is about learning from a historical perspective.

I highly recommend looking into CLS.

Smokehouse2287d ago

I have never heard of castbox I will check it out later. Lol@the many different opinions about this dude. I wasn’t trying to be divisive, I just liked his input on some things.

AspiringProGenji2287d ago

He has a youtube channel. Colin’s Last Stand, a podcast, and Side quest (gaming content). Subscribe. I enjoy his show

TorpeAlex2287d ago

He left the Kinda Funny podcast that he and Greg Miller started when they left IGN, and said some questionable (mainly just unnecessarily inciting) stuff* that mostly leaves him in the corner of the internet that the "screw SJWs and political correctness" crowd is cool with hanging around in. N4G ironically has a decent amount of this crowd as well. Watch as the dislikes grow on my comment.

*He made a "Finally, some peace and quiet" joke regarding the Day Without Women movement, said that he'd love seeing Trump supporters have a bigger presence in games journalism, and named his new podcast "Colin's Last Stand" which seems like a questionable move if you've been accused of racism.

RobinGaming2287d ago (Edited 2287d ago )

People can see right through comments like yours. A joke is a joke, he didn't want "Trump supporters" to have a bigger presence but conservatives (which is fair as 99% of the dev community media is undeniably liberal, which sure doesn't reflect the general population or gaming community), and god knows how easy it is to be called a racist nowadays so those claims don't mean anything without substance.

TorpeAlex2287d ago

@RobinGaming, no he literally said Trump supporters.

https://twitter.com/notaxat...

His delusion is that the lack of diversity in media is intentional and not a direct effect of reader preference. If the majority of one's target demographic was unhappy with the content you were publishing then they would go elsewhere and your platform would evaporate. The fact is that there are more left-leaning youth than any other age bracket and if you think otherwise you're only fooling yourself. http://www.people-press.org...

XVision842287d ago

Colin rightfully wants gaming media to have more diversity of thought. If you listen to any of his content you know that he's always open to discussion and hears people out. I've been listening to him for years and all the accusations he's gotten (like being racist) are laughable because he so often advocates the opposite.

Also, @RobinGaming love your channel dude. You make great videos :)

AirJohnston2287d ago

His sentiment was that he wants diversity in games journalism. I thought that’s what people want?

Atom6662287d ago

Didn't he actually say Trump supporters as well as Socialists? Meaning just more diverse backgrounds generally? His point being that there is a lack of political diversity in the main stream games media, which I fully agree with. Not everyone needs to cater to those left leaning youths you mention.

Your attempt to downplay both the point he was trying to make and his actual comments is a good example of the problems he has been vocal about.

It's ok that people disagree, and differing perspectives are important for content creators and viewers/listeners alike. He poked the hive and the angry little bees all came out to try to sting him for it. They apparently failed when they saw that enough people weren't there to support the "I'm always right and your differing opinion offends me" crowd. Good on him.

Dirtnapstor2287d ago

If you do not solely adhere to the leftists mantra, you will be demonized and exaggeratedly labeled everything derogatory under the sun.

@Robingaming: love your channel, keep up the good work!

gamer78042287d ago (Edited 2287d ago )

@TorpeAlex

Okay First:
He made a joke that honestly was made on tv sitcoms for ages and not one of his friends had his back at Kinda Funny. Furthermore even months after Colin left he knew he had to extend one last hand to his friend Greg to see if they could meet and talk things over, knowing that life is short (especially being there for greg through his cancer). Greg declined and Colin has made his peace knowing that he at least tried to offer a hand to salvage a friendship.

And Second:
When was Colin racist?!?!

just wow man... people yah sometimes disagree with comments for the fun of it on here, but trust me when I tell you this, these disagrees are for good reason.

ginganinja2287d ago (Edited 2287d ago )

I find it strange that the 'screw SJWs and political correctness' crowd seem to like him in spite of the fact that it's his video re the Mass effect 3 ending which calls gamers 'entitled'.
Usually, they hate gamers being connected to that word, and yet he was one of the first to use it as shown in this godawful sanctimonious video;

Any sense? The dude is a moron, all the fear mongering over the pro, his nonsense about MS catching up to sony cause reasons. Dude is a cancer.

Smokehouse2287d ago

I haven’t heard either of those examples. Not saying they didn’t happen but “Fear mongering over the pro”? How do you even begin to do that lol? Sounds like fanboys taking shit personal to me, just saying.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod2286d ago

@smokehouse...you are clueless....Google is your friend. On Kinda funny he was saying a lot of mis-information, and he double down on it when proven wrong.

Smokehouse2286d ago (Edited 2286d ago )

Yeah let me google “fear mongering the pro” real quick lmao. I’m clueless because I’m not aware of such trivial fanboy bullshit? Okay pal lmao.

Yui_Suzumiya2286d ago

Yeah I've been a Colin fan for about 10 years, back to the old ign days. Sad what happened between him and Greg.

I think he's more likely referencing Sherlocks nemesis.

The game decided to end its service and operations?

jznrpg14h ago

That’s one way to shift blame

19h ago
Vits13h ago

I mean… it was pretty underwhelming. They basically slapped on that overused “neon remaster” aesthetic that a bunch of older revivals have leaned on, cranked up the speed a bit, and called it a day. No real innovation, no fresh ideas, just a faster, flashier version of something we’ve already seen.
