Development on Metroid Prime 4 is being completely rebooted

CH:

Nintendo may not be the first name on your lips when you think of classic shooters, but the Big N does happen to have a trio of terrific blasters under their belt from a bygone era: The Metroid Prime trilogy. The return of Samus Aran way back in 2002 was the stuff of legend. Metroid Prime was gorgeous, fast-paced and beautifully optimised for console.

Fast forward to almost two decades after that game was released, and Metroid Prime 4 seems to be oddly dormant despite having been announced by Nintendo back at E3. So what gives? Well, it looks like Nintendo just isn’t happy with progress on the project, and they’ve decided to go back to the drawing board.

They basically gave it to the developer who we all thought was going to be working on it and should have been from the start

Neonridr2339d ago

yes, which I am happy about in the end. I would rather them do it right, rather than release something that isn't up to their standards.

TiredandRetired2339d ago

Yep. I'd rather wait than have another Metroid: Other M or Federation Force. This has got to live up to the Prime series. None of that forced story. I prefer that mysterious air that previous Metroids always had, not convoluted dialogue heavy plots. The old stories were told by the environment itself and what you discover as you go along. That's what I've always loved.

The 10th Rider2339d ago

Rumor seems to point to them having another project in development. They were probably busy when MP4 started development.

metabolicfrolic2339d ago

It would have hurt worse to have waited this long for a new Prime and have it be total ass.

EddieNX 2339d ago

It does hurt but if it's for the best then I'll wait. Retro Studios taking over the development is definitely something to celebrate!!

cleft52339d ago

Sad that it got delayed, but I am thrilled that they are bring Retro Studios on board now. Overall, this is a great move on their part and now it will be exciting to see how the game turns out.

Doge2339d ago

The transparency is appreciated. It sucks that we're gonna have to wait longer. But if it means aiming for a better standard than what the original build was, and Retro being back on board. Then I'm all for it.

Still though. Oof.

Baza2339d ago (Edited 2339d ago )

For some reason I thought Retro Studios was already at the helm of this game.. probably because that would only make sense! Retro Studios did 3 incredible MP games before why bring in an unproven development team for one of your most important franchises?? Looks like another 4 years of waiting.

The 10th Rider2339d ago

Apperently they have been working on a different project, so it was probably poor timing.

Not really sure how I feel about this announcement. On one hand I'm really disappointed it's at least 2, and likely 3 or 4 years out, but on the other hand having Retro on board gives me a whole lot more confidence in the series' return.

paintedgamer19842339d ago

Minimum 4 years. I honestly dont see it launching now until after the switches successor.

Sono4212339d ago

I mean, sure it sucks, but damn this transparency is a breath of fresh air. Why can't all companies be like this? Including Nintendo. If they were this transparent about their crap online it wouldn't bother me as much.

With updates like this it's at least an acknowledgement of failure so they are looking to correct it, in the terms of their online they won't even admit it's terrible and not worth even the low price they have, but they will never admit it, and neither will the fanboys.

TGGJustin2339d ago

And people thought we were actually going to get this game that we saw nothing of this year lol.

-Foxtrot2339d ago

Even funnier since people said Nintendo won E3 2017 mainly because of Metroid 4 and Pokemon Switch

Pokemon Switch being a dumbed down remake (the real one is coming this year...2 years later)

Metroid 4 restarting from scratch

eagle212339d ago

And they will be awesome games. When was The Last Of Us Part II announced?...like 2016? ;p

Vegamyster2339d ago

It's no different than E3 2015 when the FF7 Remake & Shenmue 3 were announced, people considered Sony the winner for those two announcements but FF7 is still years off and Shenmue 3 comes out this year, 4 years later. Turns out people get excited for big announcements, every fan base does it.

neutralgamer19922339d ago

Eagle

How about PSX few years back and game is coming out in 2019

TK-552339d ago

Well yeah they did win e3 2017.

Similar to how Sony won 2009 with TLG and Agent announcements.

2339d ago
SuperSonic912339d ago

@ veggie

At least they shown proof of game development assets not just a logo any kid can make.

Vegamyster2339d ago

SuperSonic91

Prime 4 was announced too early just like the other two games, a CGI trailer or basic concept art doesn't change this.

SuperSonic912339d ago (Edited 2339d ago )

And they believed a logo with no gameplay proof at all.
Only Nintendo fans can do that. A logo is a game to them.

It was fraud written all over it.

Anyway this news sucks ass.
This is their chance for a true next gen hd game to join the big league.

TK-552339d ago

"Only Nintendo fans can do that. A logo is a game to them."

E3 2009 Agent was just a logo so your logic is faulty.

Nyxus2339d ago

That's disappointing, but at least they're making sure the final game will be great. Sounds like it'll be a long while before it's out though.

Sciurus_vulgaris2339d ago

As much I have been critical of Nintendo in the past they don’t rush games. Nintendo has some of the best quality standards of any game company.

Lionalliance2339d ago

Star Fox Zero was still mediocre though.

jaymacx2339d ago

That control scheme was awkward. That game would probably be better suited for VR.

wonderfulmonkeyman2339d ago

The game was great fun; the divisive control scheme was what ruined its chances of higher accolades.

The 10th Rider2339d ago

@wonderfulmonkeyman,

It can be fun and mediocre at the same time. Ultomately it was an okay game that reliad too much on SF64 nostalgia and had a control scheme that could be good . . . But was a pain in the butt to learn. It was definitely a mediocre game, but I can see where those who took the time to get the hang of the two screen mechanic could have a blast with it.

JimmyDM902339d ago

I don't know. Kirby Star Allies, Mario Tennis and Mario Party all felt like rushed/incomplete games at release.

Metroid Prime 4 Can Be Played Like A PC Shooter On Switch 2

Metroid Prime 4 supports mouse aiming with the new and revamped Joy-Cons on Switch 2.

gold_drake80d ago

i wonder how well thats gonna work.

darthv7280d ago

mouse aiming should feel very fluid and natural to any PC enthusiast.

UnbreakableAlex80d ago

Because of the new high greedy Nintendo prices, people will play the game on an emulator on the pc or Mac anyway.

gold_drake80d ago

yeh just read about the game prices. ridiculous

80d ago
Jin_Sakai80d ago

I guess no one remembers when some N64 games were $75 and $80 back in 96.

Ps5conehead80d ago

Nintendo is a company to make money. There not a charity.

badz14979d ago

@Jin_Sakai

Keep bringing that up. You are doing a good job. Because N64 was a huge success for Nintendo and they didn't get demolished by the PS1 that gen, right?

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 79d ago
Neonridr80d ago

I mean ultimately it means you have to play with a flat surface. Great for those people who play games at their desks on computer monitors, less so for those of us who like to sit back on the sofa and play.

But nice that the option is there at least.

lukasmain80d ago

The world's most uncomfortable mouse lol

Neonridr80d ago

I've held some pretty uncomfortable mice in my day. I'll have to try it out to see, but I'm sure they've done extensive testing with it. As long as the width is stable enough that it's not gonna tip over everytime you try to move it, then it should be ok. Plus it's a great option for those who prefer mouse style aiming.

--Onilink--80d ago

Also, there is no way there arent already third party options ready for release date where you just pop in the joy con in a more usual mouse shell, but it doesnt necessarily look uncomfortable even without that

Jingsing80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

Yeah, I said the same thing. If the mouse doesn't at least support your hands resting arch position you are in big trouble. I don't see how this would.

Neonridr79d ago

you don't think Nintendo tested this feature? They just decided to slap on an optical sensor and be done with it?

blacktiger80d ago

I been asking this for long time and nintendo is about to make all fps a mouse standard game, I hope

lucasnooker80d ago

It can be played like a real PC shooter when you’ll soon be able to emulate it on an actual PC lol

Jingsing80d ago

As long as they are smart enough to do most of the work first before releasing the emulator and then putting it in a decentralised location and repo.

Ratchet2380d ago

They just copied lenovo go handheld system.

drivxr80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

and Lenovo copied them with detachable controllers?

Jingsing80d ago

Nintendo copied Android gaming tablets that had detachable controllers that the big tech sites laughed at until Nintendo did it (Engadget, Verge etc hypocrisy). and didn't do it any better.

Metroid Prime 4 Looks Great, and We’re Still Debating If It’s a Switch 2 Game

The final Nintendo Switch 1 Direct just gave us our best look yet at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond—and it’s stunning. But here’s the big question: Is this actually a Switch 2 game? Join the NVC crew as they break down the new trailer, analyze Samus’ psychic abilities and the jungle planet Viewros, and debate whether this is a cross-gen release or a last-minute upgrade for Nintendo’s next console.Plus, we’ll discuss why Metroid Prime 4’s long development cycle (and lack of a release date) has us suspicious. Is Nintendo holding it back for the Switch 2? Or is this truly the Switch 1’s final masterpiece?

_SilverHawk_84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

Metroid prime 4 looks so dated and bland. I hate it when fanatics can't be objective because it sends the wrong message about what's good so Nintendo continues down the same wrong path. The short gameplay of metroid I've seen is enough to convince me that the game is rubbish and not worth full price. Im hoping Nintendo doesn't continue with low quality and bland looking games for the switch 2 and only relying on games brand name to sell. The switch 2 is a new generation where it's possible to have very powerful handhelds or midrange handhelds that can handle modern games with very good performance. Switch 2 shouldn't have games that resemble switch 1 games or even have performance issues like switch 1. I've seen a lot of games on ps3 that looks a lot better than metroid prime 4 and the ps3 was released 20 years ago.

Levii_9284d ago

Look i get it Switch is ancient, i hate that fact and i'm so sick of the console and can't wait to get rid of it finally for Switch 2 but you can't deny that this game isn't impressive looking running on such an outdated hardware. We'll find out soon if exclusive Switch 2 games will look just like Switch 1 remasters or something better and more, but judging by that short Mario Kart teaser... ehhhh... hmm i don't know.

_SilverHawk_84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

All i would like from the switch 2 is to be able to run modern games like gta 6, assassins creed shadows cyberpunk and others with performance similar to having medium to high settings on a pc at a stable 30 to 45fps locked and having the ability to buy all previous Nes games from the original to the latest switch without renting. I would also like Nintendo to have Nintendo online to be as good as Xbox live and psn with a proper party system and no silly friend codes

ZycoFox84d ago

It doesn't help that they don't use the latest tech, and then drag it out for 8 years when it should be more like 5-6 tops.. especially being a portable device which gets outdated quicker.

83d ago
83d ago
Levii_9284d ago

It's not a Switch 2 game it's a Switch 1 game. It will be a cross gen game like BOTW was. Switch 2 version will have better framerate, resolution and texture filtering.

Plagasx84d ago

My thoughts exactly. It'll be on Switch 1.

originaljohn84d ago

I wasn't really excited by the trailer editing and no solid date given but the gameplay looks great and environments look super atmospheric. Retro doing wonders on the Switch again.

badz14983d ago

"it's stunning"

LOL the bar is really REALLY low for Nintendo. Stunning, sure...for 2010!

With "E3 Season" Now Over, Here Are Some Of The Best Games To Look Forward To

Following the major video game showcase reveals over the last weeks, games like Astro Bot and Doom: The Dark Ages are highly sought-after.

Profchaos366d ago

I went from being unexcited about anything that wasn't GTA vi to having a fully stocked end of the year especially after that direct

LostPotato365d ago

It's not over yet still have the THQ showcase and Games-Com this summer,

TwoPicklesGood365d ago

Xbox has a ton of games lined up. I was hoping more would be coming to PS5 but I think I’m going to finally subscribe to PC Game Pass since no matter what, it will still be a better deal. If MS makes a handheld, I’ll buy a console, if not I’ll play on PC.

phoenixwing365d ago (Edited 365d ago )

You could buy a steamdeck if you actually have a pc library. And If you don't have a steam account I feel sorry for u when you claim to own a gaming pc
