I believe that's the number most of us predicted.

darthv722332d ago

that's better than some thought. It just seems to... plug along. It will probably sit somewhere between the NES and SNES numbers when it's all said and done. Very respectable, all things considered.

TGGJustin2332d ago

I mean is it? The gaming market was nowhere near the size it is now back when the NES and SNES sold that much.

UniqueGuy912332d ago (Edited 2332d ago )

In what world this number is respectable? Switch is about to overtake XB1 most likely by later this year and it was only in the market for just over 2 years.

Going by the NPD numbers, XB1 sold around 25 million in US and PS4 at 28 Million so far. That leaves only 16 million XB1 in the rest of the world compared to 64 million PS4's.

_SilverHawk_2332d ago

Next generation I expect the next Xbox system to sell about 20 million or less due to play anywhere.

Razzer2332d ago

"that's better than some thought."

Well, considering it was less than that just a couple of months ago, it seems "some" were right. I wouldn't call it respectable. it is lagging behind last gen numbers significantly.

Sophisticated_Chap2332d ago (Edited 2332d ago )

@TGGJustin

While the gaming industry was smaller, there was also far less competition. When you look at the NES, there wasn't anything competing on its level. Even the Sega Master System barely managed to compete. NES generated a ton of excitement when it came out, where all the kids were talking about it. Video games were still a relatively new experience at the time, and everyone wanted to try it out.

Compare that to Xbox One today, and you have heavy competition, not only from Sony and Nintendo, but also from the PC gaming sector. You also have more casual gamers using smart phones, which wasn't a factor in the 80s or even the 90s.

On top of all of that, people are still gaming on their Xbox 360s. I have played many backwards compatible games, where the people I'm playing with, never bothered to upgrade to an Xbox One, whether it's because they are content, or whether they don't have the money, that's anyone's guess. This is really the first generation to be affected by the fact that the previous generation of games are still relevant, and people are still playing these games online, which was not really much of a factor in the previous generations.

So I agree with DarthV72, with all things considered, its not bad. Analysts are predicting even fewer console sales across the board next gen. This is partially due to modern games being updated all the time with new content, and with many people being satisfied with their 1080p TV screens.

There will certainly be more people who stick with the current gen Xbox for many years, than there were with the Xbox 360. Not to mention, the Xbox 360 is integrated into Xbox Live across the board, with Xbox 360 friends showing up in your friends list and with the ability to party up with people on both Xbox One and Xbox 360. So the 360 is still very relevant, particularly if you are a casual gamer. This will be the same thing with Xbox One, and especially with Xbox One X, since it already plays games in 4K.

DarXyde2332d ago (Edited 2332d ago )

That's lower than I thought. I honestly thought it was closer to 50 million.

Those aren't "bad" numbers since, yes, that floats around NES/SNES numbers, but given the size of the market today is much larger, that's really not great either. Granted, it's tracking a few million behind Xbox 360 which sold pretty well this time, but I'm sure Microsoft must not be happy that their market share has shrunken.

Come to think of it, PS3 and 360 did well, but when you think about how long the generation was, PS4 is doing considerably better than PS3 and Xbox One is doing a few million worse than Xbox 360 at this point.

nix2332d ago

The sales number could be less... We just thought - it can't be that bad considering how well it did last gen. Maybe when they start selling well next gen they'll probably start announcing numbers. Until then we're stuck with "number of bullets shot".

NarutoFox2332d ago (Edited 2332d ago )

I guess that's decent. The Switch will be over 45 million by the end of the year

"Next generation I expect the next Xbox system to sell about 20 million or less due to play anywhere"

This, i have seen this and actually few friends of mine are into racing and football so i did suggest them Forza and asked them to get the xbox one but they said Nope since they have a PC ... few of them have a PS4 to play exclusives only... So yes! Play anywhere did actually put a break on XBOX sales where people here Disagrees or not... But that's a fact..

MS on the other hand did benefit from this because of software sales, hence they are doubling down on 1st party studios and now we hear MS wants to be NETFLIX of Gaming, catering to a much larger audience and not xbox and win 10 users only.

If Sony had Play anywhere it would have been the the same too..

letsa_go2331d ago

@Ceaser9857361 I agree, I sold my xbox one as soon as they announced PlayAnywhere since I already had a capable gaming pc. Seemed redundant to me to keep the xbox one. Now that xbox 360 emulation is starting to work well on PC, that gets rid of my other reason for wanting an xbox one.

alb18992331d ago

Taking in consideration that MS market is concentrate on 4 or 5 countries I don't find it bad at all and remember all confusion from the beginning of this generation.
But they are in a better position to compete in more markets next generation without any doubt.

WelkinCole2331d ago

No it's not anywhere good. It's a year off from next gen and X1 is not even half of what x360 sold overall. Market wise it's a disaster

bouzebbal2331d ago

No competition this gen.. Shame

Remember when everyone said its less than 30 million

Razzer2332d ago

Which very well may have been correct at the time. It is all speculation regardless. Either way, I doubt it was "everyone".

mandingo2332d ago

People on n4g said that to this very day

Razzer2332d ago

People on n4g said it was less than 30 million....today? Post the link then and we can all have a laugh

RosweeSon2331d ago

Well it clearly was haha it’s now just got to 40 million ish. After Christmas period meaning it was only barely 30 million for long time

rob-GP2331d ago

Nobody says under 35 atm. People, myself included, estimated 36-40 due to it being around 31 in Dec 2017. People on here said less than 40 due to numbers of and chips made, but that was based on info a few months back

rainslacker2331d ago

You mean about a year or so ago? yeah, I recall that. I also recall a rather long thread on one article back around December which pegged it at around 38-39.

Now that we've established what people thought, why is it relevant? Especially since this analyst may be just as wrong or right as we all are/were. It's not like the analyst has access to data we don't, and there are those in the community which seem to be surprisingly accurate in extrapolating these numbers based on various facts available, and if they make their case well enough, it tends to become how most people around the internet figure out current sales numbers.

Rude-ro2331d ago

Remember back when this information was released and did not need marked as “rumor”?
There is still no solid information to say exactly how many were sold.

AmUnRa2331d ago

Who where that everyone you speaking off?

dragonyght2331d ago

lol that was about year ago. nobody in sane mind would think it would stay at 30mil

I wouldn't say most. I've seen people claim the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One at a 3 to 1 ratio so many times at this point, but it seems to be closer to 2 to 1.

Sunny_D2331d ago

90 to 40 is not 2 to 1 lol. The article even mentions this.

MoonConquistador2331d ago

@Sunny D - To be fair, 90 to 40 isn't 3 to 1 either. At times it's sold 3 to 1 but for the most part has been closer to 2 to 1 hence why the numbers are somewhere in between

MoonConquistador2331d ago

Only on this site can people disagree with simple math.

Anyone wanna calculate 90/40 and tell me how it's closer to 3 to 1?

RosweeSon2331d ago

People claim allsorts like xb1 tracking the same as 360 lol

rob-GP2331d ago

3:1 is in Europe. Americans sales make it close to about 2.2:1

rainslacker2331d ago (Edited 2331d ago )

Assuming the 41 million is correct, and Sony's recently reported 91.6 million as of 12/31/2018

They'd be at roughly 2.25 : 1 worldwide

However, the 3:1 is typically for worldwide sales, or sometime EU/UK sales.

So, yeah, worldwide, it's closer to 2 : 1 than 3 : 1, but a quarter of a ratio point is pretty significant when dealing with large numbers.

AmUnRa2331d ago (Edited 2331d ago )

So do the numbers Xbox one sold say 41mln. PS4 sold 91mln.
So the gap is 50 mln. Thats sounds more, no it IS more than 2 to 1. Isn't it?

starchild2331d ago

It's CLOSER to 2 to 1 than 3 to 1, which is what I said. It's about 2.25 to 1, but if people are going to be rounding they sure as hell shouldn't be saying 3 to 1.

rainslacker2331d ago

What would us lowly forum goers know? We know there aren't any smart people in our community who can extrapolate numbers based on seemingly random known facts and put them all together to make a meaningful conclusion. /s

What's scary, is that the community can often do this with rather high precision, in a time frame which is well ahead of analysts, who I suppose get paid for their services.

That said, I think this is a bit higher than most predicted.

TGGJustin2332d ago (Edited 2332d ago )

It's actually right around where I expected. This is a machine that has only been selling around 7-8 million a year worldwide. It hasn't been doing anywhere near the PS4 numbers. Idk why there were people a year ago who were saying it was at 40+ million. The US is their biggest market and it has only been selling a few million here a year. It's dead in pretty much all of mainland Europe and Japan. The UK is good for them but that market as a whole isn't huge as game consoles typically only sell 10,000 or less there in a week through most of the year.

YodaCracker2332d ago

This makes the Xbox One the 9th best selling console of all time! It will likely pass the SNES’s 49 million before the next Xbox arrives.

letsa_go2331d ago

I like how we are celebrating 9th place now. lol

kneon2331d ago

@letsa_go

That's the equivalent of getting a ribbon for participation.

headshotfrosty2331d ago

All good. Not bad to be in the top 10 of all time considering the bungled start. It'll probably hit 50+ million after a few years of discounts into the next generation.

Hedstrom2331d ago

When NES released in the 80s the world population was 3,4 billion. 2015 The world population is at about 7,4 billion.

TGGJustin2332d ago

Difference is they don't have a Kinect device this time that is going to cause their sales to soar. Plus they don't have the Europe presence they add last time. They might reach 50 million by the time it's done selling.

2332d ago
TGGJustin2332d ago

@jakiah66 yeah well it isn't much like any $500 piece of hardware. It did increase their sales likely due to people who already owned an Xbox upgrading but it wasn't THAT big an increase. Had they not released it they would be doing much worse.

Kribwalker2332d ago

@Jakiah

It’s a gamechanger for what i see on my TV screen 😉

No other console outputs as much 4k or runs 90% of the games out today better (the 10% being exclusives)

Razzer2331d ago

^^^^^^^^ The definition of moving goal posts.....right there. ^^^^^^^^

rainslacker2331d ago

They probably would have sold more if they found a way to capture the casual market like they did with the Kinect. They went to the other extreme this time, and it's not working as well for them. It really is just another piece of evidence that power doesn't matter.

Kribwalker2331d ago

@Razzer
what goalpost did i move? I never said it would be a game changer and make it sell more than the PS4. But the Image Quality upgrade on the OneX vs the One S (and every other console) is a game changer. So yeah, to me it is a Game changer.

Razzer2331d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

The topic is Xbox One sales. You know that though. That is why you are moving the goal posts.

CoinOrc2330d ago

It's interesting to see, the XB360 was selling better at this point in time, but that was all thanks to that years head start on the market. Interestingly enough the PS3 was selling at a faster rate even though it launched a year later and had a significantly higher price.

It really is hard to ignore the DRM and the $500 price tag of the XBO. Most everyone thought the PS3 damaged Sony's brand but crazy enough even that improved. The PS3 stuck around and managed to outsell the Xbox 360 just slightly in it's 6th or 7th year.

Strength of a brand and a decision to double down on gamers shows that Sony is a pro in this industry.
The PS4 will be Sony's 3 home console to sell over 100 million units. The forth to exceed 80 million units, and the 5th PlayStation hardware to sell in excess of 75 million. Their only real failure is the PS Vita in terms of commercials success. It simply didn't captivate like they thought it would, even tho it was a well made machine.

ArchangelMike2332d ago

I know Nintendo are doing well, but I'm not sure sales of the Switch will surpass the xbox one by the end of the year. It's not as though sales of xbox one are going to stop completely, they will still probably sell another 10 million consoles before the end of the year. I have to say though, Microsoft will really have to work hard next gen to turn the tide.

gravedigger2332d ago

Quote : they will still probably sell another 10 million consoles

MS only managed to sell 10 mil. Xbones in 2014.

TGGJustin2332d ago

Lol the Xbox One only sold 10 million in a year in it's first year. That's never happening again. They'll be lucky to do 5 million worldwide in 2019.

WilliamSheridan2332d ago

Once another price drop hits it'll soar

Livingthedream2332d ago

It will be interesting to see where it ends up, 5 million seems a bit modest I think 7 to 8 is plausible. Either way MS looks committed to bringing the brand much needed games. Assuming they are solid games it can only help their sales.

Razzer2332d ago

"Once another price drop hits it'll soar"

Don't know if Xbox One sales will ever "soar" but it is certainly not priced correctly to meet demand. I doubt MS is willing to take a loss on the hardware at this point. Just ride this gen out and start over next gen.

gravedigger2331d ago (Edited 2331d ago )

@WilliamSherida

Quote: "Once another price drop hits it'll soar"

Yeah, Xbone was on sale since beginning of the 2018 till the end of 2018. in US. And guess what, Xbone ended last in overall units for 2018, especially during Holidays for 199/399 for X. in US. How in the whole world Xbone sales will "soar"? There is absolutely a thing when it comes to devaluing your product when it seems like it is ‘on sale’ all the time.

Gamingsince19812331d ago

"Once another price drop hits it'll soar" the same thing was said about the Xbox one x launch...

No suprise. Several years ago even though MS refused to reveal actual number they still claimed Xbox One outsold 360 in same period. While from 2017 they never said such thing and just focus on active user number combined on Xbox and Windows PC.

starchild2332d ago

Yeah, but that's how all of these companies behave. They're never going to highlight their weaknesses or things that make their product look bad. Last generation when the PS3 sales were lagging Sony didn't report sales either. I'm surprised some people don't remember that.

Razzer2332d ago (Edited 2331d ago )

"Yeah, but that's how all of these companies behave. They're never going to highlight their weaknesses or things that make their product look bad"

And? That's not what is being discussed. First MS said they were only going to talk about MAU numbers and acted like sales numbers did not matters......until they suddenly mattered again.

"Last generation when the PS3 sales were lagging Sony didn't report sales either. I'm surprised some people don't remember that."

That's because it didn't happen.

In 2012, Sony lumped PS3 sales numbers in with PS2 numbers in their annual report. At no point did they say they were no longer releasing sales numbers.

rainslacker2331d ago

Give Greenburg a break. He's been held back for so long, they had to let him out when they had a win. He was starting to get ansy...and they probably had to clean out his humane natural habitat area. I hear it was all sticky from jelly donuts.:)

The guy isn't all that bad personally, but as a PR guy, he is kind of cringe worthy. i think he seems like a pretty nice guy otherwise.

Cat Quest III Is Heading to Apple Devices on August 8

"A big part of being a cat pirate is sailing the seas and traveling from place to place. What better way to do just that than by playing Cat Quest III on the go? Soon, aspiring kitty pirates will be able to enjoy the charming cat-themed action RPG on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. That should be a purrfect option for gamers who don't have the game on Switch or Steam Deck. The iOS version will still support 2-player local co-op, thankfully," says Co-Optimus.
