Here's How Xbox And Microsoft Win The Next Console Generation

Forbes: "Unlike the previous generation, in which the PS3 and Xbox 360 ended things at roughly a draw, no matter your fanboy camp it is an inescapable fact that in terms of pure sales, Microsoft was indeed trounced by Sony in the Xbox One/PS4 era. Sony is about to hit 100 million PS4s sold. Microsoft stopped announcing official Xbox One figures a few years back, but estimates put it at probably not even half of what PS4 has done over the same time period. So, how does this all change next time around?"

Third or fourth Forbes MS puff piece in just a few weeks? More native ads?

Atom6661926d ago (Edited 1926d ago )

Is this a puff piece? It seems to just be listing off all the things that MS needs to do, which I'd think most people would agree to. It doesn't propose with any certainty that they can accomplish these things like other clickbait has done.

There's a lot of "ifs" that are easier said than done. I hope they do, because the more great games the better imo.

ApocalypseShadow1926d ago (Edited 1926d ago )

Yes it is. Xbox PR Puff Piece Apologist Revisionist History Article #231456784.73241

I know there are more of these articles coming leading to E3. Microsoft can't just do well and be an actual gaming company. Phil talks about just playing games, but now we want to get back to making sales matter or that exclusives matter or that power matters or innovation matters.

The amount of Flip Flops is getting ridiculous. https://farm1.static.flickr...

What's even more funny is that features is being pushed as being more important than games. Not only that, but Microsoft "innovations" are making gamers pay for online, paying for free to play games, always online to sell xbl subscriptions, services to kill physical ownership, trading and lending games. And now putting exclusive games on a service at launch that would kill big AAA game creation and profits without massive micro transactions, dlc and season passes to lock you in. And the article writer wants Sony to join Microsoft in that. Ridiculous.

Microsoft is just trying to come up with a new way of selling DRM2013 to the masses. And we see just like all the other "innovations," Xbox fans just lap it up as supposedly great for the industry. They're not. We end up paying more and owning less.

But just wait when Microsoft claims they are the leader in VR and have been doing it for years without making any games and talking down about it from executives. Then we'll see it stack on top of the other flip flops.

@shadow

No, it's really not a "puff" piece. I'm not sure you know what that means. It's just talking about what the author thinks MS needs to do in order to succeed. Fair points are made too.

Talk about revisionist history though. MS pushing Sony to improve PSN (yes that costs $) was a good thing. I'll take the quality of the paid online on PS4 over what we got last gen. Now I wish PS would push dedicated servers and deliver on some of the additional PSNow features they mentioned in 2013. Hopefully with the paid PSN, those investments still come.

Would I like it to be free? Sure. Do I think they could reasonably create a platform on par with XBL without charging? No. If they could, and are only charging now for greed, then that's BS, is it not? Free online was only ever going to be temporary unless you're just a blind fanboy. But we did get PS+ out of that fight, so it's another point for "competition is good" in my book.

People like the GP model of day one releases. Why not? It's ballsy and risky, but it is an important step forward imo.

Sony doesn't do that, but they still have no problems selling MTs, season passes, or turning my favorite racing franchise into a $60, online, GaaS title. Is that MS's fault too?

Where's your moral outrage on them? Hopefully MS doesn't copy Sony on that one.

I know there will be more MS articles in the next six months too. There will probably be even more AFTER E3 as well. Crazy, I know....

The more they do things right, the more positive the coverage will be too. It might be a long year for you.

crazyCoconuts1925d ago

Journalists / writers typically choose their words carefully, especially on the headlines. This headline doesn't say how they COULD win the next console generation. It tells you how they will win. It's either engineered as click bait or to manipulate you into thinking it will happen. Either is not cool from a "journalist", and Forbes has posted 3-4 of these types of articles in a week or two. It's just good to keep an eye on the media...

The Wood1925d ago

Can any level headed Xbox fan still say with honesty that the timing and frequency of these types of articles isn't a lil suspect.

I'm still awaiting the slew of ''This is how Sony will dominate again' puff pieces

NarutoFox1925d ago

These opinion piece article's be putting a smile on my face 😁

UltraNova1925d ago

Is it me or Forbes knows better than MS on how to make the perfect console?

Atom6661925d ago

A new gen is coming. Writers will write about Sony and MS's future. Giving an opinion on what someone thinks a company should do is not "puffery." It's literally what 90% of us do on these forums. I thought some of this guys points were decent. No sensationalism either.

As an FYI...You want to know why we see so many write about MS in particular? Because people who supposedly don't care about the product swarm these articles and give them more attention than they're worth.

We can sit here and talk about how the next PS5 can win next gen too. Same as a year ago everyone was forecasting the Switch. There's nothing wrong with the topic. Argue the points they make if you want, but the constant whining from some is just tiring.

People need to get a little tougher skin and quit crying wolf about every article that isn't just a news release from the PS blog.

The Wood1925d ago (Edited 1925d ago )

'You want to know why we see so many write about MS in particular? Because people who supposedly don't care about the product swarm these articles and give them more attention than they're worth.''

Lol. . . Forbes. . . .

They're getting paid to pad stats and alter opinions. MS have been crap for the main reason we buy consoles. . Games. Why do these 'writers' think Sony are just going to take their foot off the gas and fall off like Microsoft did last gen then followed it up with a worst performance this gen. You think Sony is unaware of the possible improvements happening at MS. MS couldn't best Sony's worst console despite having plenty of the media backing them and a year/year+ head start whilst being cheaper for the whole gen.

MS have to repair the damage they're still causing and can get above sea level before they can even think about 'winning' anything. Games are the main catalyst not services.

S2Killinit1925d ago (Edited 1925d ago )

I think the first thing MS needs to do is stop paying for these articles and PR campaigns and invest the money in making games instead. And i dont mean only at the beginning of generations like they’ve always done, I mean really adopt this policy of being a creator like Sony/Nintendo is. They need to stop cannobolizing on the industry and create games, take chances, take risks. And above all play fair. Stop the smear campaigns. Stop the way their xbox magazine sounds like a political partisan news agency. Stop trying to control the conversation with giving their fans lip service and instead use their energy and resources in meritfull game related ways. What I’ve seen from them this generation was that they put all of their efforts into trying to find the golden goose, to somehow winning or setting themselves up to win in the future by moving ever closer to integrating consoles with PCs. maybe they will succeed and finally dominate the industry in this way but if/when they win in that manner, console gamers will be the losers. I want MS to change. Like really change.

starchild1925d ago

I don't see anything wrong with writing about how Microsoft can do better, or yes, even win next generation. They were the underdog this generation and they've recently made some changes that potentially could shake things up next generation. And of course people can add in other changes they think would allow Microsoft to do better. I find it completely normal that people would want to discuss it. All this talk about Microsoft paying off writers is just silly. No evidence whatsoever and it doesn't even make sense. A lot of these articles aren't even that favorable towards the Xbox, since they are actually drawing attention to what's wrong NOW. If you think Microsoft would pay for that you're not thinking clearly.

crazyCoconuts1925d ago

@starchild, it isn't unheard of for companies to pay for native advertising ( https://www.nytimes.com/201... and Forbes specifically has started doing this, even putting an ad on their cover making it look like regular content. Even if it's not as blatant as native advertising, the bias has existed by big companies pressuring news outlets by controlling ACCESS. If you want to get a game before it's release date so you can get the review out, you have to have a good relationship with the company. To keep the relationship good, you need to keep those comments positive and review scores high. We'll give you an exclusive on the technology of our new console, but that's not for free, I guarantee it. This is all about money and buttering everyone's bread. This obviously applies to more than game journalism. Anyway, best places to get reviews you can trust are places that don't take sponsors.

rainslacker1925d ago (Edited 1925d ago )

Yes, but it's forbes, who often acts like MS is in a good position. Just yesterday, they had an article about how MS is actually leading the pack for next gen because of all they've done to set themselves up for next gen, all while actually saying that it wasn't a big deal this gen that they sucked overall.

Even if MS did all the things listed in this article, which is actually what people on forums have been saying for years anyhow....so not really all that insightful by the author, but hey, that's journalism today....they probably still wouldn't come out on top. There are a lot of things working against MS that go beyond their policies this gen, their lack of software output and over-emphasis on services, and generally a complete lack of seemingly in touch with the consumer on many fronts.

They're fighting against two giants in the industry.. One who is currently at the top of their game with Sony, and the other who is doing remarkably well catering to another large demographic of customers, while also taking up valuable market dollars from the core or somewhat casual potential install base.

Despite their buying new studios and making some good services, and with a new streaming service coming soon, MS has done nothing at all this gen to try and build it's brand outside it's core territories. That isn't going to help them next gen, where they'll still be an afterthought, or worse, not even a consideration.

MS despite the above positive things, has squandered this generation, and made it seem like they are willing to let a consumer base go if it isn't going well for them. They talk a lot, but deliver little. Despite what the Xbox fan boys wants to say, this isn't going to help them going forward, because they're losing trust among the consumers, and even if they have a good game come out, no doubt, when it comes to the actual sale of the console, the things they did wrong this gen are going to be front and center of many discussions.

MS has to prove itself all over again. They did good with the 360 for much of its life. Even the OGXbox was pretty good, but they aren't often given credit for that because most people don't understand why they had to abandon that gen so quickly. The problem for them now though, is that their failures this gen are all self-imposed, and while MS struts around acting like it's doing great, the customer is asking what is wrong with them. That makes people more skeptical going forward, and no doubt, that is going to be a problem for them with returning customers.

This gen proved that people will migrate to other consoles despite being invested in an ecosystem, but MS has nothing to encourage the PS gamer to migrate, so Sony would have to screw up royally, like MS did. Nintendo fans are likely to find more of the kinds of games they like on PS platforms, as they share many similar titles, while MS often doesn't carry them at all, or at least doesn't promote them if they do. X1 users are more likely to migrate because they just don't see what MS can provide for them anymore, whereas there is really no doubt on the Sony side that Sony will provide, because the way the gen has played out, Sony, more than ever, is seen as the company that delivers big games that are must play. MS.....not so much.

On top of that, MS hasn't even proven that it can stick to a long term franchise if it's not one of their staples, and they seem very risk adverse at attempting new IP's. While that may change with the new IP's, the kind of recognition and long term customer good will they gain from that takes a long time to build, and I see some Xbox fans act like a single game will somehow reverse MS perception among the gamer....which isn't very likely.

So this is probably PR (puff) too? It's nothing new allot of sites do things like this for the big 3.
Don't get your knickers in a twist because they gave a OPINION on what ms needs to do next gen to win.
They didn't say they will win.
Some people just hate for no reason.

There’s a reason why nobody trusts game journalists anymore:

neutralgamer19921925d ago

Single player games which is highly reviewed with almost yearly contention of some sort in GOTY lists

Focus on gamers and games and not on services. Services need to be the side disk not the main course

rainslacker1925d ago

Step 1: Release Console
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Profit.

I don't know if MS is going for a win next gen. Think they're more concerned with growing their Live account base for those MAU's, which are what they're using to gauge their success and future potential with investors right now.

Sony is like Michael Jordan in his prime. I think they'll sway most people to stay with PS

Eonjay1925d ago

To make a long story short, BC means auto win for Sony. If they don't have BC it is still an auto win for Sony because of brand loyalty. None of this will stop Microsoft from doing good as long as it does what consumers ask for instead of telling them what they want. 'Deal with it' has been the Xbox Motto for years now in practice charging us for things no one ever asked for to increase their profits. The media coverage creates the illusion that services is what gamers want. It is not. Journalist helped beat Xbox this gen because they were never realistically critical claiming that '2018 was a banner year'. They don't care about gaming. Or gamers. We see that and it pushes us further away from the brand. I would like to see honest coverage of Xbox.

sammarshall1021925d ago

When you mention the media creating this illusion that services is what us gamers want, you really hit the bullseye

I never saw a push for unfinished games to be added content to later by gamers and yes I believe this is where MS wants to take gaming for their pockets. Microsoft's greed is what caused the original Xbox One plan

FallenAngel19841926d ago

The only place Microsoft can stay consistently competitive in is North America. Xbox still has a huge issue competing with PlayStation outside of that territory

spwittbold1925d ago

UK & Spain it seems to be fairly competitive, just sayin.

Ratchet751925d ago (Edited 1925d ago )

🇪🇸?????
Ps4 = 2.2 million
Xbox one = 320000
😂😂😂&# 128514;
If you get beaten 7,6/1 ratio, u clearly do not understand the term competitive imo

kreate1925d ago

MS is not staying competitive in North America in regards to Xbox.

Xbox is in survival mode in America.

PhoenixUp1926d ago

There’s nothing Microsoft can do to put them on top in Europe, Asia, and RotW which is essential if they want to claim victory over their competition.

Xbox 360 is the second highest selling console in North America and it still ended up behind PlayStation 3 in worldwide sales. Microsoft’s best couldn’t outperform Sony’s worse despite all the advantages they had, so it’s really a pipe dream to think they’ll ever win a generation going forward.

sammarshall1021925d ago

This. Sony made two of their biggest mistakes last gen: the price of $599 and the lack of content early on

They recovered by doing what they do best, put out great games and that is always most important.

Rude-ro1925d ago

Or maybe it was the all out media attack that fooled everyone to believe there were major issues?
Was it too expensive at launch? Compared to what? In order to get a 360 and the few sttatchments to get it to the standard of a PS3.. the 360 was actually more expensive.
The PS3 also caught up to the 360 by actually doing better sales per month world wide in a shorter period.
But an all out media army from Microsoft helped drive home “issues” that were never there along with third party deals to keep games/content off of the PS3.
Just like how the media treats Microsoft now as if they are doing anything at all with these weekly fluff pieces in order to keep it relevant.

rainslacker1925d ago (Edited 1925d ago )

It's not a pipe dream, but MS has to make changes to how it approaches the market if it wants to gain the market share. Case in point. The 360. It did early on, coupled with other advantages, which helped build the brand. It essentially did what Sony did when it first launched the PS1, which is create and make sure content got on the system. It was affordable, and was hard to ignore because of the software, and for it's time, the services(online) were really pretty new to consoles with what MS had to offer.

This gen, they're only focusing on the services, although they started strong, and looked like they'd continue what they did early in the 360's life. But then it quickly went downhill, and within the span of a few months, it went from optimism, to seeing that MS was actually regressing to a state of having almost no unique content.

Most of this is because their focus went from pushing the console, to pushing Windows. The console became a means to that end. the content is less important, so long as MS controls the sales of the games through XBL or the Windows Store.

MS realized this wasn't going to work long term, and their approach was just giving them a life line for the die hard fan base to talk them up, and the media to have something to create their click bait articles, which is about all they seem to care about anyhow. So, they started buying studios, with what I assume is the hope to deliver the games that people say they need to have to stay relevant.

As it is, I think MS would be fine as being just a service provider. Having that walled garden to make easy money off store sales or licensing fees. They know they can't do this though, and my only real concern would be that all this stuff they're doing now is just elaborate lip service to appease the critics, and stave off any disdain that they've instilled in their current user base, who they will have to keep in order to even be considered relevant for next gen, because they certainly aren't doing much to attract new customers.

No matter how it plays out, it's probably going to be a slow burn for MS. Unless Sony screws up big time at the start of the PS5, MS is going to have to hope to just gain ground, and maybe eventually they'll be where Sony is today. Sony has always had pretty good customer confidence, but this gen, that perception was placed into over drive because of the way Sony produced and released games. That goes a long way in retaining customers, and some of the decisions they've made probably brought them plenty of new customers....like Spider-Man probably brought in a good number of people who are now invested, and since the competition has nothing to go against that, there is no reason for the new customers to look elsewhere.

Outside_ofthe_Box1926d ago

Gonna be hard to get back those that jumped ship. MS is going to need a very very strong launch lineup so that many are tempted to get their console first at the start of the gen.

rainslacker1925d ago (Edited 1925d ago )

Two generations in a row they had strong line ups at launch, and the first couple years.(4-5 in the case of 360), and two generations in a row where they dropped that support off a cliff in pursuit of other things. This gen, instead of Kinect, it's game pass, and BC upgrades.

To put it in perspective, MS said they had a billion dollars invested in game development earlier this gen. They have not delivered a billion dollars worth of games. They've probably spent that in marketing though. Sony has probably invested half that much the past couple years, and delivered a lot more.

Outside_ofthe_Box1925d ago

I actually don't consider XB1's launch lineup all that strong. It was sufficient, but lets put it like this-- If they have a similar lineup for the launch of Scarlet, I don't think it would be enough to convince former Xbox gamers to pick it over PS after experiencing first hand the gen Sony had. With Sony even though the initial launch maybe weak, you at least know that SM, ND, GG, etc. will deliver quality when they do release. With MS, outside of Turn 10 and maybe 343, their studios are hit and miss when it comes to quality.
