Switch vs 3DS and Wii U – VGChartz Gap Charts – November 2018 Update

November 2018 is the 21st month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 1.47 million units when compared to the combined sales of the 3DS and Wii U during the same timeframe. In the last 12 months the gap has grown in favor of the 3DS and Wii U by 1.46 million units. The 3DS and Wii U is currently ahead of the Switch by 3.56 million units.

The 3DS launched in February 2011 (however, 3DS sales have been aligned to March 2011, since it only launched at the end of February in Japan), the Wii U launched in November 2012, and the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. The Switch has sold 24.91 million units, while the 3DS and Wii U have sold 28.47 million units during the same timeframe.

They did it to compare direct generations as @FallenAngel said, and because people on their website asked for it.

When the Switch launched it was selling on par with both platforms, but slowed down during the few month supply issues. By holiday 2016 the Wii U was dead as it was discontinued, so Wii U contribution ends next year. Overall Wii U + 3DS sold 92m (3DS still slowly chugging along), this chart will show if the Switch can surpass those two platforms.

You can bet Nintendo has their own actual sales comparison between these platforms as well. It shows that if Switch surpasses those, then there might not be a future for Nintendo in home consoles, and we'll only have gaming tablets from them going forward, which is a niche they can do well in.
