Editorial: It’s Time for Rare to Return to its Former Glory

Jacob St-Amour from Link-Cable Writes: "It has been more than 20 years now that Microsoft went out and purchased Rareware from Nintendo, but since then, they have stumbled to capitalize what were at the time some of the biggest names in gaming and have quickly become forgotten names only regulated to fans of retro titles. Sure, we have seen the return of Rare with a compilation title, a new game with Sea of Thieves as well as a few new announcements, but it really hasn’t been enough, especially not for Microsoft’s standards, but there is still a way for the gaming giant to bring back Rare in a big way and make it a household name once more, returning it to its former glory."

The 90’s were a long time ago.

I don’t even think much of the original staffs are still around, Pretty sure all the big guys have moved on

Wishing for rare to be what it used to be is never going to happen to be honest. The only thing they can strive to be is better than what they currently are. I really do hope that one day they make something real special again

Yup most left already. Went and made yooka laylee. That studio is finished.

For rare to be back on top MS need to invest on a AAA team and let them do what they want and not what they been told

DEEHULK8850d ago

Chris and Tim Stamper left Rare in 06 and they were the guys that lead Rare in the glory days of DKC and Banjo Kazooie.

@Hentai isn't sea of thieves a game they wanted to do? It's actually a good game especially now with all the updates, it's not for everyone but I revisit it every so often.

20 years ago almost thirty now.

You know, it's weird. They still have some creative ideas/concepts, that hasn't been too much of an issue. Their problem has been the quality of content. If they can improve the quality of their releases they'd be in much better shape.

Rare was given a chance to prove themselves and return to form. However, Rare spent 4 years developing a bare-boned mediocre Sea of Thieves. Had Sea of Thieves not sold well Rare may have very likely been in jeopardy.

mcstorm50d ago

Tbh I think sea of thieves is a good game and shows they still have the skills to make a good game.
OK it was a little bare at the beginning but so have other games in the past. GTS, DC to think of 2 this gen but just like them two games bits were added for free and started to take shape into a very good game.

Still has lots of people playing it to.

As for rare becoming the old rare I don't think they will but what microsoft and Rare could do is make some old ips come back they are doing it with battle toads and rare have plenty of other IPs that came be used to help widen the Xbox gore as well as some of the original xbox ips to as there were some good ones in there to.

Sciurus_vulgaris50d ago

The amount of content Sea of Thieves had at launch was inexcusable. For Rare to get back to the glory days or become a credible developer again the studio needs to follow focused development plans.

mcstorm49d ago

I get that but the support the game is getting cant be missed out to. Just like PD with GTS.

I don't think rare are what they were but SoT is getting back to the quality Rare had.

“It has been more than 20 years now that Microsoft went out and purchased Rareware from Nintendo.”

Microsoft purchased Rare in September 2002.
2018-2002 is 16 years.
Author can’t do simple math.
The Xbox brand isn’t even over 20 years old yet.

When this article was posted, the 21st century wasn’t even 20 years old yet

JACOB_LC50d ago

@PhoenixUp - Thanks for pointing that out. I'll be honest, I am a bit embarrassed for making such a blunder. I've made the proper corrections on the site if that is worth anything. :)

PhoenixUp50d ago

Lol no problem, nice job fixing the issue

You could also hope that Sonic Team would be able to return to their former glory, but alas just like Rare they continue to be a shadow of their former self.

Not even Playtonic, which is made up of a lot of ex-Rare devs, are capable of replicating and exceeding the quality Rareware used to produce.

At this point it’s best to just acknowledge that Rare’s best days are behind them, as Rare Replay clearly demarcated, rather than get your expectations high just to be disappointed later.
