Bethesda's $80 Special Edition Rum Bottles Are Made Of Plastic

Bethesda is up for another round of backlash from fans after the first batch of Special Edition Nuka Dark rum bottles shipped recently. It turns out that fans paid 80 dollars for a simple glass bottle shelled in cheap plastic cover.

2pacalypsenow2347d ago

Man Bethesda, what happened to you.

ziggurcat2347d ago

To be fair this isn't really specific to Bethesda. It's "collector's" edition stuff in general - it's often not even worth the material it's made out of, and serves nothing more than to waste your money.

The last thing I got like this was the enameled pin from the digital GOW pre-order. Not only did it come over 3 months *after* they said it was shipped, but it looked like the package had been run over by the truck 4 times, the address was wrong, and the actual pins on the back were bent in 3 different directions.

mafiabrett2346d ago

Fallout New Vegas had an amazing collectors edition. Real custom made poker chips, custom made set of playing cards, a pretty nice mini novel, the platinum chip wasn't real platinum but that's okay or else the price would of been really high. The box it came in was even pretty badass, it was kinda like a hard leather/cardboard box feel with worn out look. They did overall a very good job with New Vegas collectors

-Foxtrot2346d ago (Edited 2346d ago )

Still misleading

People might have thought it would have been worth it if the glass bottle was shaped like a Nuka cola

People usually pay extra for the limited edition Kraken rum ceramic bottles

It just looks like any rum bottle now with a Fallout reference slapped on the box

What’s the point

ziggurcat2346d ago

@foxtrot

There is no point to buying this stuff. That's the point. People are free to spend their money how they want, but they would be better off (and less disappointed at things) not spending it on this stuff.

Elwenil2346d ago

So because your item was lost/damaged in shipping, all collector items are worthless? While I do have to agree that the majority of gaming related collector items are cheaply made chinese junk, there are some things that are worth having to certain people. The FF7 figurine set I have that has been out of production for many years is now worth about 5 times what I paid for it. But honestly, it's not up to anyone to say any of this stuff is or is not "worth it" as that is completely in the eye of the beholder. What is the issue is that Bethesda seems to have not learned their lesson from the last bit of "bait and switch" they were accused of.

The interesting part of this for me is that these were supposed to ship in November, but were held back due to them not being up to "Fallout standards". I really would love to see what they were like before they made changes, lol.

PapaBop2346d ago (Edited 2346d ago )

That's why most "collectors editions" aren't even worth a second glance. The ones I've bought though I've been very happy with and I end up feeling like I own a collector's item. Still, this is Bethesda and at this point, I have zero sympathy to anyone gullible enough buying into their crap. $60 retail game worth about $15, wtf were people thinking their $80 bottle of rum would be worth? Not to mention their "collector's edition" of Fallout 76.

2018, the year two of my favourite companies Blizzard and Bethesda died, RIP.

kreate2346d ago

@zig

What ever happened to u from other companies doesn't justify Bethesda doing the same.

But I get ur message that these are universally crap products.

Their fan base that doesn't hold them to any standards.

Profchaos2346d ago (Edited 2346d ago )

Not true the fan base hasn't brought f76 which is why it's now being sold for $17 on certain key stores for legit copies.

I'm a semi casual fan I loved the regular fallout games and platinumed them but ditched 76 as soon as it was announced as a multiplayer as your choices can't have a significant impact once you add others into the mix either co op or online randoms

TheEroica2345d ago

I'm their fan base... I didn't buy 76. No collectors nonsense... Just the games.

Stop generalizing millions of people just to make your point.

Exvalos2346d ago

Greed, and years of fans letting get a free pass

pleasuretokill2346d ago

When I heard they were using that tired-a$$ engine they've been using forever for Fallout 4, that was pretty much the nail in the coffin for me. ES6 is going to use that same terrible, outdated pile of garbage. Once a company gets that big, they are slaves to their stock investors and do everything to make profit and nothing else matters. Cheap out, use the lowest quality materials, make unfinished, cash grab games. They no longer need to prove themselves. They know that they have millions of loyal sheep that will buy anything with a Fallout or Elder Scrolls title.

Time to move on to the next company (which is currently CD Project Red, imo... until they get so big that they follow the Bethesda/EA/Acti-Blizz way of things)

dumahim2345d ago

"they are slaves to their stock investors"

It's a private company.

frostypants2346d ago

To be fair, how gullible are the people who keep falling for this crap? Cheap marketing chachkies are...well, cheap.

sprinterboy2346d ago

Exactly, 80% of collectible/special edition gaming stuff is shite. A few gems out there of course but a majority of it is cheap plastic shite.

RizBiz2346d ago

Implying they were better before? o_O

kevnb2346d ago (Edited 2346d ago )

Zenimax started getting very greedy.

TheEroica2345d ago (Edited 2345d ago )

I'm the down vote...

Bethesda is a great game developer... They didn't make a compelling game in 76... All devs have stinkers.

Gamers absolutely overblow stories in this medium. Relax... Play rdr or smash bro. There are plenty of games out there and developers aren't always going to hit the mark...

Stories like this are just fodder. Even if the bottle was whittled out of diamonds it wouldn't make a difference in your gaming experience.

Bring on elder scrolls 6.

isarai2346d ago (Edited 2346d ago )

Didn't realize we were in the middle of a glass crisis, I've been buying $0.69 cent glass bottles of soda at dollar tree for weeks now. If only i had known i was contributing to this problem!

Sand is really hard to come by!

Profchaos2346d ago

Should really open up a recycling plant it would be worth more than oil

ILostMyMind2345d ago

Climate change is making sand very rare.

Lest we forget the great glass shortage on twenty-eighteen...Even worse than the canvas shortage of old.

bluefox7552346d ago

Probably cost them $5 to make a bottle.

Goldenhawk5212346d ago

Nah it's free. They just recycled bottles they got from the garbage

Profchaos2346d ago (Edited 2346d ago )

They dug the bottles out of the recycling bins after the staff CMAs party and put stickers over the old logos

Your Indie Game Just Sold 2 Million Copies… So Why Are You Still Broke?

Thomas Mahler: "Since it's quite bananas that a lot of players still do not understand the economy behind game development, I thought it'd be best to just break down a real example of a really successful first-time developer who managed to make a deal with a publisher. "

Terry_B23h ago

I wouldnt call a game that costs 10 million to make and had over 30 people from different companies working on it an indie game.

Seriously, no.

StoneTitan1h ago

its an independent studio that is not owned by any big studio or publisher. what else would you call them?

Santouryuu4h ago

I don't get it..
He starts with 10M cost for the game excluding marketing and continues to detract "other"costs...
Why are the costs of storefront, engine etc not included in the 10M?

thorstein3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

CEO makes CEO noises.

If he takes a 1 million dollar bonus every year the game is being made and the game took 5 years to be made, the "cost" isn't 10 million, it should be 5 million.

It's just more magical accounting. This industry is replete with it.

staticall3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

@Santouryuu
Yeah, it's weird. On top of that, he subtracts engine, tax from HIS own money, but this should be put on the publisher (or at least be split, 50%/50% or how they agree), because they're benefitting from the sales as well. On top of that, he makes it look like he didn't get a cent, but he (and his team) was paid the salary the whole way through, with bonuses and stuff. Probably rent for the office was taken care of as well and licenses/devices too.

And also, he acts like his games' average price was $10 (by the way, if the game cost $10 million, who decided to sell it for $20?! Sounds idiotic), which is ridiculous, popular indie games don't do 50% discount right after release and the most of the sales are done a few months after release (according to the publishers). As an example, look at Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Kenshi, they either didn't have 50% discount yet or had it years after the release.

Also, he acts like the game was only sold on Steam, but that's false. And Microsoft, i'm more than sure, didn't take 30% from them (because it's a game published by them on their platform).

The only thing this tells me is that someone is trying to manipulate us and you shouldn't work with Microsoft if you want to remain sane.

StoneTitan1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

because thats what he has to HAVE RIGHT NOW to develop the next game (engine, tax andso on)

Yes xbox of course did not have the 30% tax but then again he is just making a hypothetical, I am pretty sure their game did not sell exactely 20millions ^^

StoneTitan1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Its not the cost of storefront. Your game made 20million but from those 20million the store takes 30%. Steam took 30% from the 20million you made. got it?
If you make 20million in sales Steam takes 6 million.
So you only get 14millions. Then you have to pay back what you owe the publisher, so 10millions in devcost and 2million in marketing.
So you are left with 2millions.
From the 2millions of pure profit 70% goes to the publisher and 30% to the developer (depending on your contract)
So you are left with 600k to pay for your next game, for now.
lots of numbers but very clearly put

Really enjoy the Ori games, but the studio head has always been an insufferable dickhead. Those costs aren't included cause he's miserable and full of shit.

we need a Hitman game that is like the old ones, not too interactive and network based. I want to be able to use every weapon and unlock them for every form of gameplay style. I hate that you get punished in these modern Hitman game for using a rifle rather than your silent pistol.
