One month into the 'Smash Ultimate' release, I'm back to playing 'Smash 4'

Within the 'Smash Ultimate' release month, I've enjoyed my time playing the latest Nintendo brawler, but it has left a lot to be desired.

I love me some ultimate, but so far I like smash 4 more because its way more combo heavy, I know its early on and chars are not figured out, but the increased knockback wont allow for as much combos as in smash 4.

Me, too, since it completely obliterated my favourite character (Zelda/Sheik). Now Ultimate is out with "every character," except my favourite. F*cking bullsh*t.

I think it was because he was split between doing the Wii U version and also the 3DS version...plus he's not been very well over the years so I don't know why he decided to take more work on.

Imagine what Smash 4 could have been if he just dedicated himself to the one version

So much of the work seemed needless too. IMO they could have completely left out custom moves, Mii fighters, and stage builder and I wouldn't have thought any less of the game. I like having a stage builder but the one in Brawl was much easier to use.

Honestly the online is the biggest offender for me. Even when they've improved preferred rules matchmaking, I'm still getting paired with people who set their preferences as battlefield stages.
I really, really dislike battlefield variants. Platforms just don't work well in the game, you can't dodge off them and they screw over certain up specials (Incineroar, Dedede) and some other moves (Diddy's banana). I can't even put it as a negative preference.

My other gripe is how bad GSP is implemented. I did a 3 player free for all stock match and there was one person who avoided the fighting, did no KO's and did the least amount of damage. Only because they lost their stocks after me, they came in second and got a boost to their GSP... where despite being tied to KO's with first place I came in third and took a heavy loss to mine.
This isn't even including how some matches genuinely feel like Powerpoint slides when I'm paying for an online service now.

Ultimate is my go to local multiplayer Smash game. But I agree that online is just in an unacceptable state right now, and I would much rather be playing 4 if I was playing online often.

Smash 4 is good. I like ultimate, but some things are annoying. I hate the pre set rules too. The unlockables I like, though it’s starting to get tiresome.
Still when Brawl came out I went right back to Melee.
Sometimes we like the previous version more.

The context of this article is completely regarding online play. In which case, the author is right. Smash Ultimate's online play is vastly inferior to Smash 4's.

Not only is the connection incredibly unstable for a large portion of players, the game introduces so many variables on what kind of match you want, that you very rarely actually get exactly what you want. It was better in Smash 4 when it was divided into "For Fun" and "For Glory". It's no fun for a competitive player to want to play a 1 vs 1 without items or stage hazards, only to wait and finally be matched in a 4 player battle with items, or the other way around.

So, from an online-play perspective, I agree with him. I hope Nintendo addresses these issues in future patches, because Smash Ultimate is the absolute best Smash game ever made in my opinion regarding everything else. Just not online play. If you have friends to play with locally, though... it's a blast.

I’m loving the new smash, trying out all characters running through classic mode, and chopping away at World of Light. Can i say though, that I’m overly disappointed at the lack of modes? The characters are so unique and have such range that i miss the “dumb” little modes they had. Break the Targets, Home Run contest, All star mode, different types of multiman melee, special orders, just to name a few, are NON EXISTENT! Please don’t get me wrong, i love all the music, stages, and characters. But I’m 85% completed with world of light and i have about 12 characters left to go through classic, but then what? I used to love going through different modes with my favorites, but now it’s not there. There would also be a reason to beat all the “main modes” as it gave you different trophy variations of that character, gosh i miss trophies. I hope they at least update it like they have with splatoon 2, Mario tennis Aces and others.

Meanwhile I'm playing melee over here using an emulator online against my friends with so little latency it feels like I'm playing offline random hiccups in connection aside.
They even messed up the smash ultimate GameCube controllers with the majority of them having bad neutral stick positions.
Nintendo is no longer the company known for having tight and responsive controls with very little latency.
All these characters don't mean jack when the game doesn't feel good to play.
