Ni no Kuni II is a more satisfying JRPG sequel

There were so many reasons why things were so much more inviting this time around. The Ni no Kuni II story, which is super anime by the way, pulls people in by kicking things off with a nuclear bomb going off over America Land USA and the gun-toting President Roland being caught up in the aftershock. He wakes up (much younger) in a fanciful other world just as a half-human, half-cat boy king is being usurped. He takes the lad under his wing and acts as an advisor as King Evan find a new kingdom, acquires citizens and even saves the world.

Both are meh. RPGs aren’t ready to be action rpgs.

pietro12122310d ago

Wrong on so many levels. I can't speak for part 2, but the first Ni No Kuni was great. Also there are a lot of great action RPGs out in the market.

KillZallthebeast2310d ago

It's mike he doesn't mean it he's just poor

mikeslemonade2309d ago

The way describe the battle system for a tales game or ni no game is it’s a noisy cluster fuck. It’s just random spells and explosions.

pietro12122309d ago

@mikeslemonade
The way who describes these battle systems?
Btw there are so many rpgs that use real time battle systems (both jrpgs and wrpgs) not just the Tales games and Ni No Kuni 2.
Have you played any of the games you mentioned? They're quite simple to play like most action rpgs. I tried the Ni No Kuni 2 demo it's not hard to grasp or comprehend. Sounds like you just suck at playing those said games.

mikeslemonade2308d ago

That’s the problem they’re too easy. So much that they had to patch hard mode in, months later. You commoners are so easily pleased.

I thought the game was good but had nothing on the first game...it was missing something

InKnight7s2310d ago

Agree it would be far better if this game was released as new IP it would make sense and far better than a 100 years sequel. I mean this is the same mistake of Dark Cloud 2 which is so weird.

-Foxtrot2310d ago

Probably would have been the best, the familiar capture system was great in the first game and could have been expanded on here.

My issue with the 100 year thing is I understood what they were trying to do, kind of like a "Final Fantasy" scenario where each game is brand new but this time keeping it within the same world

I mean I didn't understand how in 100 years the continents changed so much, they said something about a world event happening but never go into it. If you are going to change the map that much then please, by all means, go into it.

Not to mention they hardly referenced Oliver and friends, you had the temple trials where the puzzles told the story of Oliver but that was it. He saved the entire world twice over actually you'd think his legacy would have been greater.

I think one of the issues was their wasn't much voice acting this time, you had the odd sound effect of the character as you read a text box while in the first game everything almost was fully voiced.

I would have rather had Oliver grown up in the sequel with Mr Drippy making a return

MoshA2310d ago

Haha Bandai Namco and new ip don't go together. Remember that they only published Dark Souls because it was a sequel to Sony's Demon's Souls. Ni No Kuni was just a remake of some DS game. Greediest company.

goldwyncq2310d ago

@ Foxtrot

It doesn't take place a hundred years after the first -- at least more than 2000 years have passed since the events of the first game, which can be inferred from the backstory of the main villain, who's from the same kingdom as the White Witch in the first game.

The event that changed the landscape of the world is also tied with the final boss, though it wasn't stated directly. The story is actually brilliant from a writing standpoint -- a lot of details are subtle and hidden but once discovered, they make the narrative much richer and interesting.

I agree with the lack of voice acting though. That's one of the areas where the game could have done much better.

-Foxtrot2310d ago (Edited 2310d ago )

@goldwyncq

Some say 100 in the game others say "a dew hundred years have passed" I've never really saw it saying 1000 or 2000

Even still in that length of time and what the horned one did how does the map go from this

https://vignette.wikia.noco...

to this

https://assets.rpgsite.net/...

They were better off creating a new region and saying the place from the first game is one small place in an even bigger world. Fair enough continents moving but even Kingdoms like Ding Dong Dell seemed to have moved which doesn't make sense since the great sewage system underground is in the exact same place as the first game.

"which can be inferred from the backstory of the main villain, who's from the same kingdom as the White Witch in the first game"

Doloran wasn't from the Kingdom of Nazcaä like the White Witch his Kingdom was called Allegoria

goldwyncq2310d ago

@ Foxtrot

Doloran was stated to be alive around 2000 years ago when Allegoria was destroyed. Allegoria was also located in the continent of Nazcaä, which the game shows in the world map during the final chapter. Since Nazcaä was sunk below the ocean when the Horned One started its rampage 2000 years ago, then we could infer that at least that amount of time has passed for the world map to have changed so drastically.

As for Ding Dong Dell's location, if you examine the first game map closely, you can see that that it's nestled near a mountain range, which is the case in the second game as well. It's more likely that the continent had rotated 90 degrees, seemingly putting the kingdom at a different position from where it was before.

Thought i was the only one who prefered the first. II was a great game in its own way, but i missed the Familiar system (sans the broken capture mechanics). Higs just weren't the same imo. Hopefully if they make a 3rd game, they will bring back familiars, with an improved capture mechanic, and still keep the player combat from II.

-Foxtrot2310d ago (Edited 2310d ago )

I would like to see the familiar system return since it could easily be expanded upon but if they do that I hope they bring Oliver back grown up.

*Spoilers*

Only issue with that is with the sequel being 100 years later it means Oliver is dead and buried, unless they ignore this game and say it's an alternative world (a parallel world of the fantasy world if that makes sense) which would happen since we had this

http://ninokuni.wikia.com/w...

The Nintendo DS version featured an alternative version of Oliver where Alicia didn't travel to his world and that version became a lost soul. So they could bring in other worlds and the like, I mean it even features an alternative version of Motorville

However they could also say because Oliver wasn't an everyday normal boy and was in fact one of the many reincarnations of Shadar that the Great Sage Alicia absorbed when the soul appeared, then got pregnant by, that he dosen't age like a normal human being. It's a JRPG they could bring in any excuse to be honest and it would work.

Relientk772310d ago

Familars, that's what it was missing, also the monster raising aspects, the undeniable charm, great characters, and great story that the first game had.

pietro12122310d ago

MoshA
Namco Bandai is a publisher of course they would go after a developer who established a popular I.P i.e From Software. As for the first Ni No Kuni what is your point? The remake was a huge improvement of the original in every way especially considering Studio Ghibli's involvement

I enjoyed the combat of this title

Relientk772310d ago

The first game was absolutely fantastic. Ni no Kuni 2 was just good, enjoyed it, but nowhere near as much as the first game. Definitely missed the familars in the sequel, and monster raising aspects.

Where the Heck is Ni No Kuni 3, Mun?

Matt from We Game Daily writes: "Cross Worlds isn’t going away. It’s making a small fortune, particularly in Asian markets, so there’s no reason for Level-5 to pull the plug. That said, there’s no real reason why a full PC/console sequel can’t be developed alongside efforts to support Cross Worlds."

While Ni no Kuni 3 would be cool, if it was like the first game, where is Dark Cloud 3 and Rogue Galaxy 2?

phoenixwing464d ago

I thought the dev recently went mobile and Japan only. They shut down their American offices. So don't expect anything for consoles

shinoff2183463d ago (Edited 463d ago )

I swear they just announced a few new games.

https://www.nintendolife.co...

phoenixwing463d ago

I stand corrected then. Never heard about these games and also i just remember ni no kuni online being mobile only.

Michiel1989463d ago

they said a loooooong time ago that Level 5 was working on a new installment but there has been no news since afaik. I just hope that they take more inspiration from 1 than 2, especially when it comes to the story.

thorstein463d ago

Ni No Kuni Cross Worlds is the mobile game you're thinking of.

It looks amazing but I don't like to play mobile games.

Yeah the sequel was okay but had nothing on the first game, especially the battle system.

The story just didn't have that charm and even the twist at the end of the game wasn't really anything cool like Wrath of the White Witch.

Also the fact there was like ZERO mention of Oliver or his adventures in the game, no references, nothing was such weird. It's set a hundred or so years after but still, I'd have expected to seen some throw backs. I think we just got like a temple with his statue in it or something.

goldwyncq463d ago

If you want more Oliver, just watch the movie.

nowh47d ago

i mean.. the second games gives us his clothes but thats it, what i dont understand is that if its set 100 years after the first game how the hell does mornstar exist? in the movie it showed that the wand and sword were the same weapon but we see evan was the one who forged it

shinoff2183463d ago

Fking word. I've been hoping for this for quite some time.

melons463d ago

The premium games didn't sell amazingly, right?

shinoff2183463d ago

Not to sure. They should of though. They were pretty good. I like both.

Michiel1989463d ago

yeah, especially outside of japan. They should have released on pc at the same time as the ps3 version or a short time after.

Inverno463d ago

They should've worked with Ghibli to put out a proper movie. Should've also made a Pokemon-esque spin-off rather than make Yokai Watch. If they do make a third game they gotta work with Ghibli!
