PS2 was an exception, not the rule, and then people bought it because it was the cheapest DVD player which could play games. PS3 tried to repeat the magic, but Blu-Ray had competition with HD-DVD, and the games and price of the consoles were driving the sales anyway. Streaming (VR, too, but not with console) came with PS4/X1 so PS5/X2 have no other than possible switch type portability or streaming to other devices flawlessly to add. Nobody cares for VR yet, or Ultra HD movies, so PS5/X2 will have pure service side of stuff (GaaS/PS+) accompanying them. An SSD would make a huge difference, though, but won't be a selling point for the average consumer.

Actually, in part, you are correct.
They planted the seeds long ago, and fanboyism kind of evolved in gaming media. As in there is no money switching hands to write an actual article for a lot of them.
But Microsoft is a “trillion” dollar company due to marketing and advertising partnerships. Dirty media attacks(that they have been sued for, so not hypothetical) and having ownerships and partnerships with a a lot of media outlets helps control the narrative
The conversation is actually longer than what can be had per commenting..,
But I highly recommend you investigate it yourself. It is an interesting rabbit hole hid behind umbrella structures and back door deals.
Also, Bill Gates is actually studied in marketing and the digital age since he is the god father of it.

When ya have 10 PS4 exclusives per year and one doesn't make the mark or don't care for the genre no big deal.
When you only have 3 XB1 exclusives and one does not make the mark or don't care for the genre that's far more abysmal. So when you get into volumes of people buying systems, exclusives matter. Sure multi-plat sell more that has never been argued, but exclusives are a major decider right after price, and where your friends play. Plus this year has blown up on PSVR with Beat Saber, AstroBot, Firewall Zero Hour, Moss, Tetris Effect, and the soon to come DREAMS with VR support. PSVR is starting to become a successful peripheral.
No doubt MS has made some major turns to right the ship for next gen, but Sony is not sitting still either with new Studios forming, PS5 BC with PS4 games, CP being added, PSnow to include downloads as well as streaming with PS1, 2, 3 games, PSVR2 around the corner probably a year after the PS5 2020 release. It's GAME ON!
I don't see Sony adding anything like GamePass, but GamePass is a great service to Xbox fans. Still to early to see if this dilutes quality further with developers, but time will tell.

LarZen, I'd personally take Astro Bot over everything you just mentioned on that list. That one VR game over the totality of your list. Dare I say a low res PSVR experience comes with a bigger "wow" factor than the performance boost on the same flat screen experience that can be had jumping from the base One to a One X.

AstroBot is fantastic. And easily the best VR experience since Resident Evil 7. But it's one game. Just like the exclusives are fantastic and something everyone should play. It's still just a few games every 2-3 years. If you dont play that many games or dont own a big 4K HDR TV then I get it.

But if you play allot of games. Have a real good TV and sound setup. And basically wants the best looking games without buying a PC. Then the Xbox One X is delivering. And is why even with solid sales numbers and some fantastic exclusives it's a valid question as to what console is "king" in 2018.

EDIT: And let's not forget that just 10-30% buy these exclusive games for PS4. The majority of PS4 owners dont buy or care about them. That dont mean those games are bad. We all know they are not. But it just shows that exclusives are not what the majority of PS4 owners play and buy.

What's the source of that estimate? That seems too broad a range to be reliably citing any known sales data. But it also seems you may be misinterpreting something you heard somewhere about the ratio of exclusives people buy and conflating that with the number of people who buy exclusives. I.e. Exclusives are only 10-30% of the average gamer's game purchases ≠ only 10-30% of gamers buy exclusives on average.

While we're in the area, let me add that though we don't call all exclusives "system sellers" unless they sell a certain amount, all exclusives provide a game only available on that console that compel fans of the game to buy the console it's on. PS4 not only had the "system seller" exclusives, but a wide variety of other exclusives that will each pull in their share and add up as a whole.

That's my point. Just that one PSVR game beats everything on your list for me. There's only so much you can currently get out of that flat screen image, and the jump from Xbox to Xbox One is nothing like the jump from flat screen to VR. Astro Bot uses that to innovate on new ways to play. A 3rd person VR platformer? I couldn't conceive of what would be compelling about a 3rd person VR platformer. VR in 3rd person? Doesn't that defeat the person? Little did I know that could make for not only a good game, but a genre innovating one. Just that one game.
