Chris Roberts stated that Squadron 42 has a level of connection, acting and characterization above the likes of even God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us.
This seems odd to say, considering that the mode is a year plus out from just the beta alone. Tells me they have a ton of work to do till then.
I’ll say it’s a dumb statement only just to serve as a PR hype attempt. Why compare to those games and just let it be itself. Not like any of the devs listed for the games mentioned camebout ti make the same statement. No they let the games do the talking
I can see this coming back to bite him if the game ends up tanking. Not that they have to worry about that anyway for a long while. Beta for single player in almost a year and a half l, ha
A year and a half for the beta, that means 2 years to full release in Q4 2020. Which after all the new tech they made to make creating the game easier, isn’t that bad of a time frame. The long Dev cycle is just showing what being without a publisher can allow for. While not very lucrative for most devs because video games are a risk.
"I know there are elements — whether it’s God of War or Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Last of Us, other games have similar elements to this. I feel like we’re at a level that’s above that, a level of connection and acting and characterization. But of course, I’m very biased. "
Doesn't sound very arrogant to be honest
More context :
"I feel like, hopefully, if it all works on an emotional basis, it will be an experience that will be pretty awesome for people. As we’re making it, as I’m seeing this stuff as it happens, I can feel how that’s going to be and how people will be taken by it. I’m excited to get to a point where other people can see and experience that."
He's not really 'arrogantly' stating anything, more like discussing it. "IF it all works..." and so on. These are the kind of things he's saying.
@nyu1: "I feel like we’re at a level that’s above that, a level of connection and acting and characterization."
It doesn't? Especially when nothing solid has yet to be delivered. Or that aside from RDR he's talking about totally different game from his own. And then it doesn't seem like there's going to be many moments of character development in a space sim.
To be fair, it pretty much has a better cast list than any game ever and they've been doing their motion caption work with Andy Serkis' prestigious world-class studio.
Seeing as it's at least 2 years off still and by that time we'll have the next gen consoles, we will have even better than what we currently have (and soon to have). Games of ps4/xbone (and people/xbonex) look a lot better than ps3/360, though those systems had amazing gems in the end. Though for how big a budget this game has and the actors / actresses, it better be amazing.
But the games he's quoting as being inferior were very well-written. A mighty hill for him to climb, considering that he's never delivered a narrative on par with either of those titles.
Lol in your dreams. The Last of Us Part 2 on ps4 base model will look better than anything star citizen offers. Not to mention ps5 version and launch games. Keep dreaming though!
This is PC game I think it will have Ray tracing which is possible on pc for now lou2 doesn't have the scale of this game, i think it will surpass it In many ways when we are talking about tech.
lol so out of place comment , GOW, RDR2, TLOU has earned to be recognized one the best games in gaming history, Star Citizen hasn't earned a damn thing, maybe the only thing so far they have achieved Star Citizen is to be called the greatest gaming scam ever created, seriously not joking here the responsible of this Star Citizen thing is even calling for more millions and millions of dlls in order to release it ?, daamnnnnnnn!.
Seven years. Three less than The Last Guardian and seven less than Duke Nukem Forever, with still more to show during development and offer than those two games. A game designed around being a seamless universe sandbox space to surface MMORPG takes a long time to develop, who knew?
With a budget bigger than any game ever made by a lot and years and years of development it should be top notch but at this point it’s a money pit with demos and beats broken apart with insane micro transactions . Maybe another round of begging before it comes out . A quarter of a billion at least in funding and who knows how much they have made from selling 1000 dollar ships . It will be cool if it works out but a major studio with this money could have made an amazing game without the micro transactions and it would be out already
I'm more concerned they don't mention Star Wars, Star Trek, and other series more relevant to their genre. I somehow doubt they will have characters as iconic as Kratos, let alone the likes of Luke Skywalker and Spock.
@ DVAcme I know you're joking, but it also happens to be my point. Even after the game comes out, how many people are going to look at that picture and think of Steve Colton instead of Luke Skywalker?
With statements like that I'll just wait and see because GOW, TLOU and Red Dead 2 have delivered! With GOW and especially TLOU being some of the best characterizations Ive experienced!
It's one thing to strive for a certain level of quality but it's another to go out and say "hey what we're doing is better than the best" so you'll excuse me if I have a hard time believing just words!
I am a fan of Chris Roberts work. He was certainly above par back in the day with Wing Commander, and they did go above and beyond what was typical for the day. But his ability to write and direct are nowhere near the level of what we saw in those three games. His writing was passable, even for today's standards, but it's nothing special, and his directorial skills mostly consist of overacting and quippy one liners.
No doubt but he lost me at "above" the others because those others especially TLOU is a game that broke through with its characterization, narrative and immersion to the point many who didn't game got a PS3 or 4 for it. God of War is another well crafted, nuanced game and if I were him I'd just let the game come and if people make that assertion so be it.
I just don't take him seriously because after all this time, he hasn't been able to deliver any semblance of a full game. I know the game is huge in scope, but that scope keeps getting bigger, and experience tells me that the more distracted you get from your original product, the more the whole project suffers.
I find the rest of the article more concerning than this joke of a statement that no one should take serious.
I find it odd that after so many years and already having raised 200+ million, he needed an investor for another 50 million and he gave up 10% of his company to do that. He tries to act like 200 million dollars isn't that big of a deal. Sorry, but yes it is for a single game. If you need 500 people to create a game and this long... that is a problem.
And we're still 18+ months out from this game coming out?
Overhyped is not a strong enough word to express how invested the fandom is for this. If this game is anything less than biblical at this point it is a flop
No thanks, i wanna buy more fake ships, i dont know how else to spend my hard earned money, other than buying FAKE ship for the game that my grandchildren will play
Looks good
Easier said than done.
Nothing will come close to this game when it's released squadron 42 is like how the first Crysis was it pushed tech to the next level
Excellent
I'll believe it when I see it
