If You Still Think Sea of Thieves Has No Content, You're Not Paying Attention

Since it launched on March 20th, Sea of Thieves has received a galleon's worth of criticism and complaints of missing content. Whatever you thought of it so many months ago, to say it lacks content today is simply wrong.

No Mans Sky, Sea of Theives and Fallout 76 walk into a bar...

InTheZoneAC1972d ago

NMS performs fatalities on both. 76 and SoT are competing for flops of the year.

Purrfection1972d ago

Sea of Thieves main attributes are it's social environment, something that is severely lacking here.

adamwparker1972d ago

They all accidentally trip over Metal Gear Survive passed out on the dirty floor.

Darknova20771972d ago

3 beers please. Sorry we don't serve beer in this bar.

mandingo1972d ago

NMS doesn’t.... I’ll stop there

frostypants1972d ago (Edited 1972d ago )

Fallout 76 is many orders of magnitude worse than those other two. NMS is pretty legit these days and SoT is getting there. And I don't think Fallout 76 is salvageable.

@Adamwparker haha that comment made my day

FallenAngel19841972d ago

It should’ve released when it had a lot of content

rainslacker1972d ago

I think it was more the lack of interesting content that most people talked about at launch. It's looked to have some pretty decent updates since release though

darthv721972d ago

It has always been touted as an ever evolving game so it had to release at some point. Those who come into it now are getting more bang for the buck so in essence... they are getting more content.

That would be like saying GTS should have released with everything it has now and who knows... maybe Sony will press a new disc and call it GTS: Definitive Edition just like Rare could make a SoT: Swashbuckling Edition. If killer instinct can get a re-release with all season content as the Definitive Edition then so can this game.

I am disappointed in Capcom though with SFV: Arcade edition because the disc content is the exact same as the initial release. You would think if they were to print new labeled discs and box art then they could update the disc content with everything up to that point. Nope... same ole same ole.

(Sorry, that last part is off topic)

Dreamcatcher451972d ago

Gts should come with more content, same as SoT.

BehindTheRows1972d ago

Most of it was off-topic. The deflection to GT:S was as pointless as it was a tactic. SoT lacks content. Screaming "Sony Too™" doesn't change that.

OT: Good to hear that it has progressed well, but as others noted, the content should have been there from the beginning. Should be a lessoned learned, so in the case of a sequel, they'll know what not to repeat.

Sirk7x1972d ago (Edited 1972d ago )

Over the last few years, it's been shown (looking at you, Street Fighter V), that releasing a bare bones game and then making it good after release does little to help the stigma it already created for itself. I'd question my business plan if I had to rely on game sales and MT to be able to finish the product. That, or releasing just to hit dealines just seems very anti-consumer and insulting. Initial reviews and public opinion heavily influence sales.

NeoGamer2321972d ago

Sad but true!

This has been a story this generation... Star Wars Battlefront, Sea of Thieves, Drive Club, Halo MCC, among others... All should've been delayed to either get more complete content or fix broken online issues prior to release.

It is sad that gamers accept these issues and forgive the companies so easily for not living up to their obligations to ship a quality product.

Sirk7x1972d ago

It sucks. MCC is fantastic now, but the player base is smaller than it could be because of its former problems.

NeoGamer2321971d ago

@Sirk7x
But that is why companies need to get this right for release. They taint their franchises then it takes two or three iterations to recover. Core fans will usually hang on for the changes, but the majority of gamers won't wait for it to improve.

parris1972d ago

It still wouldn't be released if that was the case.

You only have one chance to make a first impression

rainslacker1972d ago

Last I checked it still gets criticism for launching the way it did, and people not paying attention to.the content released for it unless they still play it all this time.

-Foxtrot1972d ago

Same rules apply

I don’t give a shit how better it is now, anything can improve over a long duration, what matters is not delivering at launch with all the bigged up PR and exaggerated bullshit they spewed out

one2thr1972d ago

To be a fair NMS was being made by 6 people at the time Hello Games studio was flooded during production.

That old way of thinking does not work anymore. Not in today's society.

BlackTar1871972d ago

yes it does and if you're using these games as your points Point then you just proved it does.

Nyxus1972d ago

Nah, GaaS is just a bad format.

Baza1972d ago

Yup, too little too late. This game is quickly being forgotten. Especially with all the new releases. They should just start working Sea of Theieves 2 and come out with a much bigger splash.

aconnellan1972d ago

What, because they had a bad launch? How would it be better for them to ditch everyone and work on a sequel than to continue working on the current version that many people bought and invested in?

bigmalky1972d ago (Edited 1972d ago )

Should have thought about that for day one. The issue with these type of games, is that they release with bare bones, and expect people to still be interested a few months later.

If you don't deliver enough on the first day to play with, people will get bored fast, and think twice before jumping in again.

InKnight7s1972d ago

Agree look at Overwatch, its an online only game wihout story but it did delivered a lot of content and gameplay so people supported it till this day.

kevnb1972d ago (Edited 1972d ago )

Theres a huge amount of gamers who don't really care about story and will skip any cut scene longer than 30 seconds. These gamers expect great gameplay and enough content to keep them invested though.

Kitt921972d ago

Disagree strongly onthat one overwatch while being a great game day one had like 2 game modes and after a few weeks I got bored with it

Immorals1972d ago

Overwatch launched shallow of content, and still is really shallow of content

Tedakin1972d ago

OW has no progression and cosmetics are the only reward... just like in SOT.

Potnoodle9991972d ago

Exactly, should’ve delayed the game 8 months and released now shouldn’t they. Then there would have been zero criticism. Lazy and incompetent development, trying to pull one over on the fanbase

kevnb1972d ago

You are confusing development with publishing, developers just make the games... publishers release them. Microsoft decided the game was done enough at the time, but since its on game pass i might just try it again anyway.

mark_parch1972d ago

it might have more content now but imo it's all extremely boring and repetitive. I've jumped in a few times since launch and the world still seems empty to me with one of the worst progression systems I've seen in a game. I've glad some people are enjoying it though.

traumadisaster1972d ago

What progression system? You mean buying cosmetics?

slate911972d ago

Yeah, me and my friends hopped back in after a couple of months away for the first expansion, and the lack of a progression system really showed itself.

The polish and foundation of the game is great. But there is no point in doing anything in SoT because you are just doing missions for cosmetics. It doesn't make any sense to me.

1972d ago
bluefox7551972d ago

@shaggy There's ways to do that with a progression system. Final Fantasy 14 scales down higher level characters when they go to lower level dungeons, so people can play with their low level friends. Taking out progression entirely seems to be a far worse approach I'd say.

Teflon021972d ago

I was about to say what Bluefox said.
I've gotten back into FFXIV recently and I'm pretty sure, if you're overleveled for Fates, you can sync levels to play them. Same with dungeons and missions with friends. It syncs your level down to about 6 levels over the expected max. It's not hard to deal with. Low leveled isn't a issue as you have to be a specific level or higher to do certain missions. Makes everything balanced. Also cool, because say if you have a new friend playing. You can just switch to a class you don't have leveled and gain experience with it while helping them catch up

#50 on Xbox most played list. Mind you this is an online only title. Being number 50 isn't exactly steller especially with it being on Gamepass as well.

Tired of these MS fluff pieces. Sot does not come close to what hd2 does.

You should probably read the article then, I wasn’t comparing the actual games

Cacabunga4d ago

How can it be PS sea of thieves when SOT is on PS5? Were you just in a hurry to write something??

MrNinosan4d ago

Make a less click baiting headline next time, and people might read bwfore judging.

z2g4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

people don't understand nuance or abstract thought. they just hear two games and decide they like one better than the other so the one they don't like can't be anything close to the one they like. I get that you are speaking in a larger context, not a direct comparison. it could be a huge community building game that has a long burn that could also extend to other platforms and or be cross platform. it could be like sea of thieves in that regard etc. never mind the knuckle draggers on this site. its impossible to have a reasonable, objective conversation here.

I know the headline is a bit bonkers but it is otherwise a good read apart from that.

InUrFoxHole4d ago

Lol you didn't read it. It's just suggesting that it would be beneficial for gamers if HD2 came to xbox. Like sea of thieves did. Don't get in your feels over it.

Magatsuhi4d ago

Its a click bait article. It benefits only xbox to bring a successful game to their failure of a console.

InUrFoxHole4d ago

Lol you big 😠 😡. Just wait till the showcase!

Yeah, this site just constantly has so many positive Xbox sm articles, I'm tired of them also... 🙄

what a surprise, more basic thinking from basic gamers. the comparison it could be a huge community building game that has a long burn that could also extend to other platforms and or be cross platform. it could be like sea of thieves in that regard etc.... sorry thoughts get more abstract than what your brain can seem to handle

Sea of Thieves on PlayStation 5: the next big Xbox multi-platform game tested

Sea of Thieves stared off life as an Xbox exclusive, growing over time into a genuine hit with a large, committed community. Now, in an effort to increase its audience still futher, it's become a key part of Microsoft's multi-platform push.

Draw distance better / shadows better

Also he calls most ps5 “oddity’s” and uses the term “not sure why this is happening” a lot

Ps5 is just more powerful, those 2teraflop difference and Xbox fanatics saying world most powerful console, is worth zip- zero

Sea of Thieves Welcomes 40 Million Players

Joe 'Three Sheets' Neate (Executive Producer): "As I’m sure you can imagine, when it comes to Sea of Thieves my days are full of numbers. Development costs, active servers, days until the next update… Sometimes, though, a truly extraordinary number stands out – a number like 40 million, which I’m incredibly pleased to say is the number of pirates who’ve now set sail in Sea of Thieves!"

Crows907d ago (Edited 7d ago )

40 million have set sail...that's great. How many are sailing now? Monthly active users....when it actually matters. How many people purchased the game is another important number.

Gamingsince19817d ago

You don't get numbers like that from MS mouth pieces, they just like to say stuff like "this game was looked at 129 million time, the biggest amount of people browsing a game of this genre on xbox gamepass ever in the last 3 weeks compared to before gamepass was out (small print only 2 million bothered playing longer than 20 seconds and only 100 people are playing it concurrently)

It's all smoke and mirrors

nibblo7d ago

There are usually around 10,000 concurrent users on Steam not counting Xbox or PS but really it doesn't matter as long as there are enough people on the servers to play which there always were and will be for a long time now with the PS players coming on board. Same goes for how many people bought it and how many are on GP, we aren't the accountants of these console companies so why would we care?

Hofstaderman7d ago

Reporting on MAU stats is very misleading. Other companies publish units sold, MS cannot or will not due to Game Pass. We all know that their prior startegies have not panned out so now they have to actually sell games on other consoles. In any case, SoT is doing impressive preorders on PS5 and will very likely motivate Satya to release more games other than the four indicated games on their competitor's consoles. Take note Phil is radio silent....

Jingsing6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Yeah Microsoft would tell you the start menu has had 1 billions clicks on Windows 11 to let you know it is beating Windows 10 when the reality is something else. 10,000 concurrent steam users is enough for me to extrapolate there aren't millions playing this on console either. Lets not forget the motivation to bring this to PS5 is already an admission of poor player count. I'd prefer it is Microsoft would just say nothing when it comes to numbers as it makes them look stupid while trying to make everyone else look like an idiot.

40 Mil across Stream, Windows 10, and Xbox. Healthy numbers for sure, but when PC is the biggest platform, I expected more. It’ll be interesting to see how it does on PlayStation. Very well could be double that player count in 6 months with PS too. It’s crazy for developers to skip the most popular platform, not sure why they’d want to, but they must have had their rea$ons.

Christopher6d ago

PC is the market with the most competition for these type of games as well, so it's actually easier to break in on consoles where these games aren't as prominent.
