Author Writes: Games don't always live up to the expectations players have of them, but a few rare ones do. Here are 10 overhyped games that actually lived up to the hype.
Don’t forget about Horizon: Zero Dawn & Monster Hunter: World
Yup, those games did delivered their expectations to consumers.
notice any patterns????
Singleplayer, story driven.
While MHW does have a story and can be played single player, I wouldnt call it a single player story driven game
Yeah. The pattern is that they were half or full exclusives, only released on one or two platforms at a time. The developers focused on optimization and gameplay over profit. Same with Dragon Quest 11, Dead Cells and every highly rated game on top of opencritic. Only exception is Celeste which is an indie and has a simple art style. Indie games can't be cash grabs or no one will buy them.
@MoshA Dead Cells is indie too.
I know those games delivered, but was it hyped up as much as the games on the list. Honestly, i didnt even hear about Horizon Zero Dawn until it was released.
You're one of the only ones then, horizon was a massively hyped game and it definitely delivered
Horizon was hyped MASSIVELY as Guerilla's first big non-Killzone IP. It was as big for Guerilla as The Last Of Us had been for Naughty Dog after Uncharted or Spider-Man was for Insomniac. Hell, Horizon was so big that even when people were comparing it to Zelda: Breath of The Wikd, it was STILL being hailed as a landmark game.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Red Dead Redemption 2 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Super Mario Odyssey God of War Marvel's Spider-Man Persona 5 Bloodborne Resident Evil VII Uncharted 4 Don't give them your clicks.
This was a legit list. No trolling, no bias,
Three multiplatform games, the rest are all exclusive. Well, two exclusive third party games also. Seems someone's missing from the party though. Should we do a head count and see who is present or is that not necessary? Nah, it isn't, we already know who.
Thanks for the list, no horizon is disappointing
All single player and story driven games!🙌
I love single-player, story-driven games. TLOU is a great example.
Looking at that list, goddamn, guys, shenanigans from bastards like EA, Ubisoft and Activision aside, this has been a great goddamn generation of games.
I agree, we got so many bloody good games.
That list looks like its worth reading their reasons. Thanks though.
I got the witcher 3 cheap but couldn't get into it and gave up on it. Might need to give it another chance with the way people talk about it.
Same thing that happened to me, just couldn't get into it. Will try to give it another chance at some point.
It's a bit of a slow burn in the beginning, try the side quests, they were the best part IMO.
Same here. Can't see why it's good...
Witcher 3 is a game I dismissed when I first purchased it, because I didn't think I could get into it. I gave it a second chance and kept playing, and boy was I wrong. I thought to myself "Okay, NOW I understand!" I encourage you to keep at it. Maybe it'll click. Best RPG I've ever played.
Persona 5 was just one of the best games made. I know it was good, but didn't expect it to blow my mind.
Have you played the others? They're great quality titles in general. Persona 4 Golden set a pretty high bar in my mind and somehow, Atlus found a way to completely eclipse it with 5. The only thing I would say is that a big decider of which is the best for a lot of people is the story: for the sake of providing an example, 5 was a great modern title that looked at rebellion, 4 was a great murder mystery, and 3 was a much darker game. I'll say this much: the games are infinitely cooler if you're intimately familiar with Jungian theory, social cognition, and cognitive psychology. That all aside, I expected people to protest Breath of the Wild. I personally love that game, but a decent amount of people on this site seem to have different opinions.
I played Persona 4 and Persona 3 as well. Persona 4 is still one of my favorite game of all time.
spiderman is above average at best
