Fallout 76 File Size and Day-One Patch Is 96.6GB

With Bethesda’s latest RPG just days away from launch, the Fallout 76 file size and day-one patch have been revealed.

The patch is 55 GB (still a joke for a patch as it's bigger than the game install):

First up, the initial install size is 45.04GB. On top of that, you’ll then be prompted to download the day-on update, which is even bigger at 54.641GB

Funny enough, this patch is probably the pre-bug-fix patch, and it'll still be rife with problems.

Considering some said the beta was just as big, this sounds more like the situation like Activision claimed for the Spyro remasters. That it couldn't fit on one disc. The game is probably that big, and they just filled up a BR disc, and pushed the rest to a download. It's a MP game, so I assume people will have internet, but thats still a lot of data to download, and could take a while for some people.

Yes, The future involves buying a disc that acts merely as a glorified download code. The game is only ever really available for download.

One would presume though that if one were to buy a MP game, then they'd have access to the internet, so its not like they can't get the content. But still, that's a rather sizable patch.

Yeah, I got called a liar because some monkey on here didn't believe it but I have no reason to lie. The game seemed to play fine and I didn't seem to have anything "extra" from the beta, it just took up a ton of space and took me about 2.5 days to download on my crappy Internet. But now that the game is revealed to be that size for everyone else, I am kind of wondering why some got the larger install and some didn't. Maybe an experiment with the beta with compressed files? Hard to say.

I'll likely wait a good year before considering a purchase.

more people that never it gave it a chance..I am a massive fallout fan and guess what this is more of a fallout game than people actually think...and guess what you can solo the game and it has multiple story lines...and loads of NPC;s it just doesnt have human npcs because at this time period is when the only non mutated humans are people leaving Vault 76...perhaps in the future when it works with the story line we will see other vault dwellers become NPC's but right now it has lots of Robot Npc's that have lots of charm and SUper Mutant NPC's ...I love it and I have played every single Fallout game.

that was the launcher when the first beta happened on PC. It was 100 percent fixed on the next beta day and it just made you reinstall the game anyway.

My guess is the full game is that size regardless, and they just didn't want to pay to manufacture two discs like R* did with RDR2.

This isn't so much a patch, as it is the bulk of the game's content itself. I wouldn't even be surprised if there is an additional patch on top of this.

Either that, or this is just a disc with a unlock code on it. Similar to a Steam Key you can type in....although not likely restricted to one use.

Bet the size is the same reason many open world games, especially older ones, have large patches. The game is probably divided into segments and you’re basically downloading groups of data that get unpacked during install.

The more convoluted, or rather complicated, the game system the more a single thing that needs patched will affect other things so if one piece needs fixed you’d download that “group”, plus any Pack with connected data. And then anything connected with that as well, and so on and so on unto the original problem is fixed. More things need fixed, the more you have to do that is only somewhat related.

A lot of RPGs are downloaded, installed, or patched like this, or have options for it if your connection is less than perfect as you can download the game in pieces and then unpack them all when complete (saves you from say 99% download and one bad error making you restart completely).

Not too surprised if Bethesda still has this system since Fallout 4 and 76 simply use the updated old engine from when they bought out the one the one they used for even older games. Creation being based on Gamebryo or whatever it was originally?

Too many games still have patches with comparable sizes nowadays, but bet a lot has to do with the way it’s Packed and then installed.

I'm so glad I'm not getting this. Between players getting punished with a temporary stat drop for being murderous, MTs galore, and now the news that this game is going to take up an inordinate amount of HDD space between this massive patch and the install size that isn't even included in that 96.6GB, I think I'll pass. It's not looking like one of the better Fallout games, that's for sure. Also, now that Bethesda has announced they're in support of an all-streaming future, I'm iffy about supporting this company, among others, at the best of times. A MT-fest today, a subscription model tomorrow and an even worse tactic for controlling the flow of entertainment down the line? Here's to a future of gamers like myself not supporting companies like that.

Edit: after reading the article, the headline is misleading. The 96.6GB does include the install size. That's still an inordinate amount of space to dedicate to one game though, even if you've augmented your memory with an external HDD. I also don't take back anything else I said.

Wish the ESRB would slap a giant label on the box saying that the game isn't on the disc, and a gigantic day one patch will be necessary to play. Since its just a sticker, it can be placed after the production of the disc.

This sounds more like a CD Key to download the game than an actual patch.

ESRB won't do that though, because they're actually working for the industries interests, and not the consumers.

This patch was not in addition to. This patch overwrites the beta client. I don't see why this is a big deal.
