Well deserved, fantastic game and the best JRPG this year.

Tapani34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

It was good, but I thought Nier was better. I bought the Japanese version last year, so I put them in the same year. This year's best JRPG for me... I dunno... haven't played anything good released this year from the JRPG side. Probably my wife's favourite will win: Dragon Quest Builders 2 :)

That being said, I loved the characters in DQXI and would buy the next game on release as well. I just would have hoped to have a little bit more meaningful exploration and a more expansive world-map like in Souls games (semi-open world)

bouzebbal34d ago

Great, haven't bought it yet I need to find time to play games 😭😭😭

TomatoDragon34d ago

Well Nier was released last year, and it’s really more an action game then rpg. Great game, but not really comparable to a traditional jrpg like DW.

Tapani34d ago

Originally DQXI was released in July in 2017. I think Nier could be very well compared to a traditional JRPG. Just as much as Tales series are traditional JRPGs, so are Nier and Drakengard games.

Suzyp33d ago

Both are different games, hard to say one is better than the other. They are both great games.

NapalmSanctuary33d ago

@Tapani "I think Nier could be very well compared to a traditional JRPG. Just as much as Tales series are traditional JRPGs, so are Nier and Drakengard games."

No offense, dude, but that is just silly. Nier, Drakenguard, and Tales series are action RPGs. Its a completely different sub genre than traditional turn based and ATB JRPGs. Its impossible to get a traditional JRPG fix from action RPGs, whether they are made in Japan or not.

About nearly. 1.9 million for 3DS in Japan, 1.5m for PS4 in Japan.
About. 3.4 million in Japan. Meaning about over 600K in the west.
Meaning about 60-80% from PS4 and 20-40% from steam in the west.

Terrible sales in the west.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro34d ago

The game has only been out 2 months in the west, and it continues to sell. 1 million copies will be surpassed soon enough. That's great.

Think before you write.

DJK1NG_Gaming34d ago

And? It sold 3 million in the same time frame in Japan.
Not only that. There are more PS4 users out there in the west WAY WAY more than Japan.
It was marketed well too. But still couldn't reach 1 million.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro34d ago

@DJK1NG_Gaming

Dragon Quest is super super popular in Japan. That's why it sold so much in Japan in such a short time. It will easily sell over 1 million copies here, and I'd say that's really good.

It's said that in Japan, Dragon Quest games are only allowed to be released during weekends so that they don't disturb Japan's workers. It's super super popular there.

SegaGamer34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

@DJK1NG_Gaming

It's not terrible sales at all. In the west, this is a niche title, in Japan, it is huge.

DJK1NG_Gaming34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

@Felix_Argyle_Catbro
By that logic. Monster Hunter World shouldn't have sold more in the west than it did in Japan.
Yakuza shouldn't have sold around the same or more than it did in Japan.
I can list more.

NapalmSanctuary33d ago

@DJK1NG_Gaming DQ11 had shit for marketing in the west and it came out a week before Spiderman PS4. 600k sales is phenomenal under those circumstances.

tanukiesuit33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

DJ is just mad the Switch version isn’t out yet, and that the game is even offered on PS4 (it’s like blasphemy to him). He complains about how other people want Sony to have a “monopoly” for JRPGs, but will HAPPILY boast about exclusive Nintendo JRPGs. What a damn hypocrite.

They are still getting DQ11 on Switch, so he needs to settle the hell down.

rainslacker33d ago

Game kind of had a quiet release in the west. Also came out right around the same time as Spider-Man, which probably didn't help.

But I think with all the positive word of mouth, it'll have some legs in the west.

Not horrible. Ni no Kuni 2 which has a decent name outside Japan Didn't sell a million outside Japan and it has the same PS4 and Steam release. It's actually pretty good. Especially with the time it came out. With Spiderman, Tomb Raider Etc. I bought it over both, but most won't outside Japan
Note: I'm sure with digital sales on PS4 and Steam it definitely is probably more closer to 1.2-1.5 mill. But I mean in a 2 month period. It was like 900k I believe and that's with Japan as well since it was a WW release

DJK1NG_Gaming34d ago

Ni No Kuni only did well in Japan on DS in 2010.
It was never popular to begin with.

Lime12334d ago

On Switch will sell much better.

Lime12334d ago

"About nearly. 1.9 million for 3DS in Japan, 1.5m for PS4 in Japan. "

Wow. Only 20% higher sales on 3DS despite 5X bigger install base than PS4 at the time.

UCForce34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

You just being overreacting. This is good new for Square Enix. I’m sure they are making more Dragon Quest games to the west.

DJK1NG_Gaming34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Overreacting?
How? all I said terrible sales in the west. a little over 600K and 3.4 million from Japan that is not overreacting.
That facts. Yall just can't accept it.
It yall who overreacting and getting defensive.

rainslacker33d ago

Terrible sales is a matter of perspective. 600K for a popular, yet less well known JRPG in the west is pretty respectable.

You have to put things in perspective to decide on if they're good or bad. The perspective here would be that that's around $35+ million in revenue, which is pretty good to make sure that the game continues to get support in the west, and likely we'll see more titles in the future.

Zeldafan6434d ago

A lot of people are probably waiting for the Switch version.

BlaqMagiq134d ago

You do realize Dragon Quest is RIDICULOUSLY popular over in Japan? It's almost practically worshiped over there. These are expected numbers for the West. You are a fool if you expected the West to have ANYWHERE close to those numbers in Japan.

DJK1NG_Gaming32d ago

First read the comment and second I played Dragon Quest 4-9 and know its popularity.
I only commented on western sales on it being over 600k. That terrible for the simple fact of PS4 and Steam userbase in the west.
Of vourse majority came from the PS4.
I never said anything about it sell near Japan numbers. But it had the potential to but people only cared for Spider Man.

UCForce33d ago

Again, we know JRPG isn’t going to sell a lot in west. But 4 million units sold is impressive and it does. It did marketing well. You called us being defensive and overreacting. Well, you should reconsider your thought.

DJK1NG_Gaming32d ago

Im speaking on the western sales not the entire 4 million. All I commented on was the western sales.

DerekTweed33d ago

Dragon Quest XI was released in Japan in July 2017

DJK1NG_Gaming32d ago

90% of the sales came ftom that month

BlaqMagiq132d ago

Umm that's not terrible at all. You're missing the point. Dragon Quest is niche in the West. NICHE. You're basically comparing West numbers to Japan numbers and calling it terrible.

Install base in the West has nothing to with it. With that logic every game has terrible sales in the West.

And why are you comparing it to Spider Man? Something that's MAINSTREAM? Of course that game was gonna destroy DQ in sales. It SHOULD. I don't think you understand the difference between niche and mainstream.

DJK1NG_Gaming32d ago

No I was not comparing.
I was giving a breakdown on the sales number we have.
No where in my original comment I said "compared to"
