Square Enix To Shift Focus On HQ AAA Games Under Luminous Prod After Extraordinary Loss of $33M

Konami planted pachinko machines around their HQ

Luminous Productions is a new studio designed to be a AAA team headed by Tabata.

So new computers, office space (If it's not in SE's HQ), new employee relocation fee's, software, 6 months salary for likely 50+ people (Minimum for a AAA team) Camera's (Which mind you can run $5,000 up for the body and lenses)

So you have to build 50+ production quality computers minimum, get dev kits which are not cheap. It all adds up fast, I expected this to be a pricey venture, one solid release and they will make more then that in no time, and this was likely not an unforeseen cost for SE.

Retooling Luminous Productions and scrapping their existing projects to redirect focus to AAA games.

They better do a triple A final fantasy 8 remake or something.

If your willing to wait another 10 to 20 years...

FinalFantasyFanatic2425d ago

No thanks, I'd rather ports or remasters of old games, they should move onto the next new FF (which they'll probably screw up if the last decade plus is anything to go by).

bouzebbal2426d ago

i honestly think they should rethink their way to make games.. they spend forever to release a game and by the time it comes out it is outdated technically..
Nomura should stop being in the gaming development.. that guy, as talented as he is, doesn't understand the necessity to work faster on games and his contact with the fans is one of the most terrible in history. 1990s era is over.

Fans want well established Squaresoft IPs.. give us a decent Parasite Eve 3, this series is unbelievably underrated and they can make a great TPS with RPG elements because the story of it is so catching.
To the oldschool JRPG lovers, give them just a remake of Musashi, Threads of Fate, Vagrant Story to start with..
Keep FF and DQ coming every second/third year... and you will see profit.

ApocalypseShadow2426d ago

basically this. they take too long to make games. and their multiplatform focus spreads them too thin creating decent quality games, but lower than what they were known for when exclusive. either the merger with enix, the loss of hironobu sakaguchi, the changing of game engines, the trolling of playstation fans with ffvii for two generations as we're still waiting. the money they could have made on ps4 this gen could have compared greatly with the ps2 days.

they just need new management. and, a sharper focus. wouldn't be losing any money if they got things out on time.

Razmiran2426d ago

I dont think they can do a proper parasite eve 3 due to rights or something

Relientk772426d ago

I want a Brave Fencer Musashi remaster or proper sequel (not the PS2 one)

FinalFantasyFanatic2425d ago

Their time frames just kept blowing out, they need to manage their time better and temper their ambitions (stop making new engines and tools all the time).

This story sounds really odd. Wasn’t Luminous working on something AAA related anyway in the FFXV DLC?

thatguyhayat2426d ago

This was unexpected. Hopefully they stay away from mobiles now

Because Nintendo makes great games.

Well it doesn’t surprise me. As much money as they make and how they value their employees. It’s a great company in that regard.

Well, when your games remain full price many years after release.

And you make profit off of outdated hardware.

I would be shocked if they couldn't afford to retain their staff.

lodossrage11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

I didn't want to say anything but drivxr is right.

Nintendo always sells at a profit because they purposely use tech that's always 5 or more years behind. And it's also true their games hardly ever get price decreases.

Don't get me wrong, it's great they kept most of their workforce, but making a point to have your tech specs behind everyone else affords that luxury.

Darkegg9h ago

I don’t think it’s their purpose to use old tech. It’s their purpose to make value of software and know their value. Nobody makes games like them that’s for sure. I just don’t appreciate their customer unfriendly policy.

It’s not impossible to take their status. Companies need to have a selection of 8-bit and 16-bit. Now imagine a split screen for 8 player game for SNES Mario kart and selling at $9.99. The problem is that it doesn’t make profit. So many companies won’t invest in “old” technology. Everyone guns for triple AAA modern technology software but honestly we can enjoy modernized 16-bit creative ideas that allows 8-player mayhem. It’s a pipe dream, possible but impossible.

If they ended up kicking people out after all of that stated above, it would be truly shameful.

DivineHand1255h ago

Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Tesla and Meta are all trillion dollar companies yet they are laying people off in large numbers.

I believe the reason Nintendo layoffs off less workers may be a result of their culture. It seems Japanese companies believe in giving their workers long term or life long employment opportunities and will exhaust all options before laying off workers. This is something we don't see much of in the west unfortunately.

LoveSpuds5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

What the hell are you talking about? It has nothing to do with how profitable they are. Its completely cultural, MS and Sony make stacks of cash and still lay folks off. Nintendo chose not to lay off staff for the same reason their execs took pay cuts to increase staff pay instead; because they value their staff and view them as colleagues, and respect them as such.

If Sony weren't so US centric I fancy they'd fare better too, they should get shot of US and European leadership and go back to when Japanese execs were running the show if you ask me!
