10 Things I Hate About Red Dead Redemption 2

BY JASON MONROE: It’s been funny seeing people go from “OMFG, I love Red Dead Redemption 2” to “actually, RDR2 sucks because…” to a kind of awkward space in between.

I personally like Red Dead Redemption 2. I’ve stuck 40+ hours into it and I’m enjoying being a cowboy in the wild west. But, it’s not perfect and the more I play it, the more things start to frustrate me about Rockstar’s latest hit.

Here are 10 things that I hate about Red Dead Redemption 2

I'm not going to attempt to savage it - it's incredibly beautiful, the world is incredibly detailed and there's brilliance in there.
But for me although I did enjoy the chair of pace to a slower game, it actually became tedious at times.
I'm selling my copy on hopefully to somebody who will play it more than I.

Only agree on the clunky gameplay, love the rest, the world shallow? It's very much alive in a big way, best game world ever.

Idk the more I’ve played the more the curtain has been raised and I’m noticing the scripting and I’m running into the same “dynamic” events in the open world

That list was meh. Most is the same that plagues a lot of games. The bounty system was bad until i figured out you need to not be seen! And change your outfit. All this talk of slow pace and you want to sit at a camp fire and listen to NPC tell stories? It's not for everyone. And those who it's for love it.

I love the camp conversations. Such a blast to see & listen to all the different things that happen. Rockstar went a few extra miles!

I enjoy jumping off my horse and sitting in a random NPC camp. But most people don't want that. They want to rush right through at a fast pace. I like the slow to fast pace of the game. If you were a huge fan of Shenmue as i am, then this is for you.

God Of War and Spidey did tons of side detailed story in perfect way that almost all of them didn't slow things up at all. Rockstar wanted to do something great but it isn't suitable with slow nature and realstic game, because its already a slow experience and forcing even more slow rhythm that absurd but I guarantee that would be awesome in GTA.

But it has to be slow. It's the west. Rockstar did do something great, twice! This game works being slow and realistic. It's GTA fans that can't understand people over 130 years ago didn't travel at 130MPH or Fly! No other Open World RPG style games are getting as much grief as RDR2. Where were all the articles about the Witcher, Skyrim and ESO being tedious and boring? Unless i'm mistaken Geralt got around on a horse not a Lambo.

@steven83r RDR2 is probably as far from an RPG as you can get. It's just an open world action Adventure game with simulation elements.

I liked gta but not a massive fan but I hate the pace in rdr2 if that's what it was like in the West back then no-wonder they all got caught or shot, man, wish I could go back to them times I'd be the fastest gun in the West.

Dude the wanted system is broke I’ve finished missions or have been looting bodies out in the open world and end up wanted with not a soul in miles seeing me

If you have ever played STALKER you will always see other open world games as inferior. The AI in that game really does make it seem like the stalkers are having genuine conversations.

The black bars also in most cutscenes. The few cutscenes without black bars look way better and more natural

I think RS actually went back and added the black bars to cut scenes, at a fairly large expense. I guess just different strokes for different folks

That's insane i would've thought the black bars were to cut costs. Not a fan of it at all and isn't seamless like the few scenes without black bars

It's basically "different strokes for different folks. "To each their own" Personally for me so far I'm not feeling it,blown away or highly intrigued.The controls are not a problem so far to me.No problem with the town size.I won't say I hate RDR2 I will say it's somewhat average at the moment.Imo RDR2 is not a masterpiece.

It's definitely to each their own but the game is a masterpiece in its own right. For an open world game set in the past they did a great job. Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be great but not in same league/category as RDR2 as it's looking to be more fast paced and something more players will welcome with it's future setting and high tech guns and features.

Everyone has their opinion of what they consider a masterpiece.Imo a masterpiece videogame would have me intrigued with everything about the game from the very beginning to the very end,something so far I don't get from RDR2.I couldn't get into TW3 as well hoping I'll get into CP 2077,I like Sci-Fi.

You do know you can love a game and still admit it’s flaws right? I love rdr 2 but the controls are def clunky and combat would be pretty bad if it wasn’t for dead eye being it’s saving grace

Story doesn't hold a candle to RDR 1? Are you kidding? The story was an aimless snoozefest in RDR I had to force myself to finish it. The storytelling in 2 is like night and day in comparison I never thought I'd actually praise a rockstar campaign but this one is excellent. Even as a side character Marsden has way more substance than the first.

The main thing I don't like about it is how samey all the combat feels. There's no real abilities to speak of and enemies seem to just spawn in like a shooting gallery. Games used to get torn apart for this kind of thing in the past but in most Red Dead reviews I see no mention of it.

Well the one description people mention about the controls is that it plays like a game from 2008 or an older game in general. So maybe the controls were acceptable back then but in 2018 people expect better?

Right right,so it's less of the controls being difficult and more they havn't been updated enough. Gotcha. The way I was reading it was a confusion with the actual control scheme.

Yeah that was before games like MGS5 and HZD came out, the game is clunky no way around it, it plays like the Witcher 3 and that game came out 3 years ago. I have been able move past the sluggish controls but man you can't deny that sometimes the character moves like he's walking on quick sand.

Ps2 clunky cause you don't stop on a dime after a full Sprint? Wtf? Ps2 was the opposite lol go play GTA San and look how you unrealistic and awkwardly looked stoping instantly. Taking 2-3 extra step ruin the fun? Wtf. Hell GTA V was the same way how is this a negative or annoyance? I don't get it.

Shallow world? His opinion is instantly invalid. Easily the most alive world in gaming history.

I have few complaints, glitches/bugs, forced weapons select from the horse and uhh...... Damn it's hard to think of much else....ummm.... That's about it the game is great

I love the fact that all NPC’s have a personality to them. Even though it can get repetitive as you go through different towns. You have to love this game for what it is and not dislike it for what it’s not. I felt the original dragged on in the middle and this game has a dull period as well. I personally play through most of the main missions and side quest later as opposed to GTA V, where I kind of do it all depending where I am in the game. Stick to the main story, worry about the other stuff later and the experience is enjoyable. The attention to detail in this game is unprecedented.

What do you mean all NPC’s have a personality? Your fellow gang members most certainly do but the run of the mill NPC’s in towns and the open world def don’t. They are either friendly,not friendly or indifferent that’s it and most say the exact same canned lines when you interact with them

It’s a start though. Better then the random person holding a drink that you punch in the back of the head in GTA. Feels like there’s more consequence to your actions in Red dead 2. I did state that it does get repetitive

For a game that has had great reviews and is a lot of fun to play, there sure are a lot of a haters trying to find fault with it. It ain't perfect, but it's beautiful in its own ways.

The clunky controls are my biggest issue. Seems like they haven't learned much from the clunky controls in RRR1. GTA5 seemed to improve on the clunkiness of GTA4 and RRR1, but they took a step back with RRR2. This is a big reason as to why GoW is probably going to be my GOTY over RRR2

Things that bother me:

1. Controls - those are simple bad for me
2. Pace, the game is simple too slow for me and combining that with the messy controls yeah no good
3. There is something about the camera that does something to my head because I feel like the character is about to turn right but no that's his default stance it confuses me, God Of War and Horizon Zero Dawn are the perfect examples of how to use that camera angle and for me it was bad implemented in this game.

Other than that i'm good...

Basically his list. (minus his justifications for each)

1. The controls are clunky.

2. You can’t run with a gang outside of missions, despite this being hyped up in the build-up to release.

3. The UI is lame.

4. The terrible lip-syncing outside of cutscenes is immersion breaking.

5. Where are all of the friendly camps out in the wild?

6. The bounty system.

7. The story is fine I guess but doesn’t hold a candle to Red Dead Redemption 1.

8. The game world, while pretty, is actually very shallow.

9. Bugs and glitches.

10. It’s obvious that Red Dead Redemption 2 has been built to cater for Red Dead Online.

One thing I hate - and I've only done two total missions so far - is why in the hell is the game telling you that (on PS4) R2 is used to fire your weapon, but then in the second mission tells you that R2 is to aim?
