Red Dead Redemption 2 | Game Review | Slant Magazine

The original Red Dead Redemption is a fascinating, instructive point in the evolution of video game publisher Rockstar Games. As Grand Theft Auto‘s lampoon of American culture began to share space with more serious narrative aspirations and a desire for realism as great as—perhaps greater than—a desire for video game mayhem, here was a relatively straight-faced western. The story of John Marston was still visibly a Rockstar Games joint in both its concern with American decay and its detours into juvenile caricature, but it reiterated the company’s desire, demonstrated prominently in Grand Theft Auto IV, to be known as storytellers as much as provocateurs.

clicks must be generated one way or another LOL but they're definitely not getting one from me

Adexus2406d ago

It's made it onto Metacritic as well which will bring the score down, I wish legit sites only made it onto there.

Rude-ro2406d ago

@Adexus
And please share, with how crooked the gaming media has proven to be.. what defines a legit site?
I mean, shall we revisit the cod reviews and how the majority of commenters were pointing out how the reviews were fluffed per financial influences?
Not saying you, but the gaming media is a joke and can not be taken serious at ALL.
There is not one single AAA major release that gets fluffed in their reviews and or torn down for clicks.
To put weight in either is the definition of ignorance due to the long history of proven financial influences in the gaming media.

fiveby92406d ago

Perhaps Metacritic should do similar to what Olympic judges do in some sports. The top score and lowest score is thrown out. Not sure how many sites are aggregated for Metacritic but maybe the top 5 and bottom 5? Maybe their algorithm for calculating already does this.

kneon2406d ago

@fiveby9

I've suggested the same thing in the past. Just ignore the top and bottom 10% and you'll get rid of most of the trolls and fanboys.

rainslacker2405d ago (Edited 2405d ago )

@Adexus

While I in no way consider slant magazine worth a damn, how does one determine what is considered legit? Meta already weights scores based on a sites "respectability", and even that I find unappealing. None of us here like Kotaku, but Kotaku used to have a lot of weight to the score, because it was considered respectable, and legit.

I think it's GiantBomb(although not positive) which has a standard reviewing system where they rate things on a scale that is transparent. A average game is a 5 or 6. Whereas everywhere else that would be a 7-8. That drives down the overall meta, but they are consistent within their own system, and generally have good reviews. Again...I may have the site wrong, but they are considered legit enough by most due to their consistency, and not trying to say that a game is bad because of a low score.

@fiveby

That would be the best way to do it, and remove any weight from any individual site. At least give the option to sort that way, and be transparent on how much weight an individual site gets.

The method you suggest is called the mean average, and it typically how statistical averages are calculated when needed for gaining what the norm is.

TyrellCorp2406d ago

Yup, nothing to see here. It seems Slant always does this.

affrogamer2406d ago

Metacritic should really check the trend of certain reviewers and stop publishing them

It's Slant Magazine. Move along people.

Obelisk922406d ago

How can these guys still be taken seriously?

Relientk772406d ago

Slant Magazine as usual has give out lower scores than everybody else. It's pathetic and attention seeking.

Christopher2406d ago

It depends. EDGE also gives out normally below average reviews in general. If it's a common review scale for them, then it wouldn't be attention seeking, but a different scale that they utilize.

Not saying that's what is happening here, but it's at least something to consider?

deckardreplicant2405d ago

I can see that...Some websites just have very low review scale.

Obelisk922402d ago

EDGE is way less nonsense than Slant.

This site is unbearable.

No Way2405d ago

So many people bash these sites and ask how they can be taken serious.. yet, they can only be taken serious when they fit your agenda? Take it with a grain of salt - not everyone likes what you do.

People complain of "crooked" and "attention-seeking" articles and websites, but then bitch cause CoD got a 10. Make up your minds, people.

AngainorG7X2406d ago (Edited 2406d ago )

Theres ALWAYS have to be one. Game is sitting at 99 on Metacritic. Cry

Brave_Losers_Unite2406d ago

So you decided to add a random cry at the end?

Sunny_D2406d ago

There’s only 26 critic reviews for the Xbox One version compared to 74 reviews on PS4.

AngainorG7X2406d ago

@Sunny

And your point is? Still is the best version in Native 4K.

kneon2406d ago

But of course, it's a Rockstar game, they always get a free pass, and issues are ignored that other developers would get reamed for in their games. RDR had so many bugs in it that it but you never saw that mentioned in the reviews. It was also a western cliché-fest with predictable, stereotyped characters, again over looked. Though this review does call them out for that sort of thing, I don't expect many others will.

2405d ago
xX-oldboy-Xx2405d ago

@Below - no the best version is xbox one x, not xbox one - which is actually the worst version. If you're going to flame people - at least be correct.

It's going to be $80 on the Switch 2.

PRIMORDUS5d ago

Or free if you torrent both of them on PC lol.

fsfsxii5d ago

You could afford video games if you stopped commenting asinine comments here and got a job instead of stealing.

anast5d ago

"You could afford video games if you stopped commenting asinine comments here"

People have cellphones. They can work and squeeze in the 15 seconds to post a comment.

OtterX6d ago

Good sign that the PS5/XBSX version is coming soon at least.

neutralgamer19926d ago

Buy them when they are on sale. We just shouldn't be surprised anymore by prices hikes and or new games costing more. Simply speak with your wallets if you want these companies to pay attention. That's the only language they understand

raWfodog5d ago

The vast majority of the games that I buy are never at retail, always on sale. And usually it'll have to be a good sale too. At least 40% off. All this talk of increasing game prices rolls off my back.

neutralgamer19925d ago

same i like to pay $25-30 at most and even than closer to $25

Wh1teLightning6d ago

I don’t live in the UK and this makes no sense whatsoever. These games have been out for years shouldn’t they be going down?!? That’s not how you attract new players.

The_Blue5d ago

They don’t care about us. It’s the newer generation they are after.

QuantumMechanic5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I think this is a very apt statement. Game publishers appear increasingly to view their IP like books, music, and cinema---evergreen content that can be reprinted throughout its lifespan (until it enters the public domain). It's actually very reasonable.

CrimsonWing696d ago

So this is how it works now? Old games get a price increase? This sh*t is completely getting out of hand now.

If Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't have Red Dead Online on Switch 2, keep it

Red Dead Redemption 2 could be excellent on Nintendo Switch 2, but it's pointless without bringing Red Dead Online along for the ride.

Not just RDR Online, but also cross save progress. I'm not starting over w my nearly 200 hours of the online. I will however consider picking it up again if I can have a purely portable version of it.

OtterX7d ago

Lol, people really don't want me to continue my enjoyment of the online I see. 🤷‍♂️

I find it relaxing, living off the land, hunting/fishing. I'd legit play it again portable if I had it available in continuation of my progress. Not asking for others to enjoy it too.

tagzskie5d ago

legit question, is steam deck not supporting rdr online? because portable gaming is years old in pc community

OtterX5d ago

@tagzskie I don't own a Steam Deck. I have a Switch 2 ordered. Easy answer.

What a hot take!!! Cut off your nose to spite your face much?

Can we get a 60 fps patch on ps5 already or is it too much to ask?

Milk...get your milk...and so much more. Really when you release the same games in three editions over 15 years it's amazing how much money, and the amount of sales you earn. It's amazing how no one can compete.

Mr_cheese10d ago

To be fair, no many companies could release the same game over and over. They've earned that whether we agree or not

DarXyde10d ago

I mean Resident Evil 4 has had longer legs and still hasn't done anything like this.

Profchaos10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

GTA v isn't the only game that's released three consoles generations running but nothing has sold those numbers including GTA San Andreas which is now 4 console generations deep.

anast10d ago

Looks like a 2040 release for GTA6

gold_drake10d ago

thats insane right?
absolutely insane

rlow110d ago

No surprising considering that it’s been on every major platform and store.

I decided to look up the longest and most sold games list. To my surprise Tetris has takes the top spot.
