Seriously now, I'm a married dude with a kid and very, very little time. I could see how this install could be upsetting for someone that gets home from work and maybe doesn't really have that much time available before going to bed, in which case yes, an 1.5 hour wait can be disappointing because for that person it would basically mean he won't really get to enjoy the game until the next day.

But even when I finally do pick it up, I'll have no problem starting the download and then run out and take care of some errands and some yard work. It appears that the patch was already downloaded and installed before the launch time. Mine was at 1.02 and there was nothing to download when I started the game.

You don't need the patch to start playing do you? Most games can play without the day one patch...otherwise, they shouldn't even be released. I usually just play games while patches download, then install them the next time I start the game.

Digital, I've gone discless this whole gen and it's great. Just start the download, put the console inrest mode and go run an errand and you'll be ready to go.

I think the only game I've installed all gen that has been excessive was GT:Sport, and I got it well after release, and had to wait for quite a few updates to download. It helps that you can start most of them before they complete the install.

For efficient Xbox One disc installs, you need to take the console offline before you begin installing. That will prevent the system from trying to update the game as it installs. It takes less time to install the disc (offline), then go back online to let it update.

Yeah, if it isn't the disc version, then the question is meaningless--because downloads depend on user internet speed. For me, it would take the better part of a day to download 100 GB.

Edit: According to the article, install time is in addition to download time. Wow! This doesn't happen on the Xbox, so I have no experience with something that inefficient. (For digital, the download should be the install--it's just the game image already updated, and the system should be able to deal with it immediately upon a complete transfer to the hard drive. Very little internal work should be left after that.)

Not sure how it is on the X1X, but all gen, the X1 has been criticized as having really long install times, whereas the PS4 has been pretty snappy in comparison. There's a workaround on the X1 if you take the system off line, but the speed is also usually slower with games that don't have updates.

It would appear this game is installing the entirety of the game before one can play it, which would take a while, and downloading it would still be slower for that much data, because internet speeds aren't as fast as from the disc most of the time. Also, there is more to a game install than just copying files for these systems. There are other things involving CRC checksums and data pointers being hard coded into ini files for quicker access, along with decompression of assets, which will be there for both physical and digital.

Whoa people relax! The game itself only takes 6:45 to install. The rest of the of the time is dedicated to making sure those sweet sweet horse nuts are fully functional, not to mention photogenic. You'll be glad they did.

The way the PlayStation handles downloads and installs is asinine. I play on all modern platforms, and it’s only the PlayStation with this issue.

as far as i know, when you install a game you can start playing once it reaches a certain percentage while the rest of the game continues to install. is that not the case for this game?

Usually the split they show is where you can start playing. But in this case, it appears to be where you have to switch discs for the install. So, it appears you do have to install the whole game. Maybe the download version has it where you can start without the whole game.

Man....So much of my childhood, and career, spent staring at progress bars. Its really cool when they don't move for a long time....and you get that anticipation that something is wrong, and then the sheer excitement of when they suddenly jump by a good 5-10%, or the utter frustration of after an hour you realize that your progress has stalled and you just wasted an hour, so you start over, and it happens again, so you position your mouse in a spot to see if it changes in the slightest after a while, then you realize you just wasted another hour.\
