The NPD Group has released its monthly report for video game industry hardware and software sales. In September, and to the surprise of absolutely nobody, Sony's PS4 exclusive Spider-Man dominates the charts.
Spider-Man crushed it, but there's an even bigger takeaway for me. wtf at Destiny 2 somehow making an appearance? I guess that basically answers the question as to how effective PS Plus can be in getting people's interest back for a game. Especially in tandem with a new expansion. Very clever!
Congrats to IG and Sony. SM is a really well made game. congrats to the other new entries on the list as well. TR, FH4 and ACO. All seem to be off to a good start.
"Marvel’s Spider-Man achieved launch month sales 37 percent higher than the combined launch month sales of all other Spider-Man games released since The NPD Group began tracking in 1995." Damn!
Great results for a great game! I'm salivating at seeing Spiderman 2 powered by that custom Navi in the PS5 and a way better CPU
I know one could joke about those other games, but that is still a cumulatively a huge number. I knew this game was going to be popular, but damn, it's really killing it. I'd be really interested in the first milestone sales announcement from Sony.
Yeah thats bat shit crazy... and all thanks to Playstation and Insomniac 👏🤓
"and is the seventh largest launch ever achieved by any game on any PlayStation platform." *Any* game. That is amazing.
Spider-Man on top as expected, but the real surprise is that Forza Horizon only managed to come in at 7'th place.
Forza Horizon released in October not September. These results are from the "Ultimate Edition" that released early. So yeah it is a surprise that it's even charting.
Yes it is! Surprised that it did so well for only 3 days on the market!
"The NPD Group’s latest report on U.S. game sales covers the period from September 2 to October 6." Forza had a full retail launch represented here, sorry to break your heart.
Ok...so that's 7th place with ONE weeks worth on the market...my apologies haha.
@timo Yes the first week when most sales happen haha..
@Prettygoodgamer Yes, but again, not a month's worth, which is what other games on the list had the privilege of being counted for. Understand that the standard version of FH4 wasn't even on shelves for a full week yet haha. Its the highest selling games for the MONTH...when 5 days start to equal a month, then you have a point...FH4 was on sale for one week total and only 5 days for the standard version...the fact that it made number 7 on that list is amazing.
You're reaching so hard it's kind of depressing.
I don't know where you saw that. The article says this "The following statistics highlight the commercial performance of video game hardware and software purchased either at retail or via an online sale over a four-week period Sept. 1 – Sept. 30."
"Forza was only out for 4 days. Spider-Man came out Sept 7 almost a month." lol....you really think that even matters? Forza could have launched in January and Spider-man would have beat its sales in 4 days.
Nope, first day until last day of September as it states in the article. That is pretty impressive for an £80 edition of a game for a console that everyone on here sees as dead ;).
@Immorals No, this article is wrong. https://www.resetera.com/th... Read the thread here you can see it's discussed. NPD is the week of the first Sunday to the week of the last Saturday it's not just the 1'st to the 31'st. That's why Assassins Creed was on the list even though it released on October 5'th.
Forza is pretty neiche racers in general sell less now than they did in previous gens
Great sales numbers for spider-man, i don’t think anyone is surprised by it being number 1 last month. “Forza Horizon 4 achieved the highest launch month dollar sales in Forza franchise history and is the biggest launch for a racing game on any Xbox platform in history. Forza Horizon 4 was the seventh best-selling game of September.” Wow, I’m shocked it was the 7th best selling game in september, when it launched 3 days before the month was over with only the double the price Ultimate edition, and with people knowing it was releasing on gamepass 5 days later. Good Job playground games “The Xbox One X System 1TB Black is the best-selling Xbox One hardware item of the year in both dollars and units sold” also a crazy stat. Xbox gamers willing to pay a premium for a better console
Spiderman isn't even the ps4's best exclusive yet it's breaking records sales wise. Forza horizon 4 is xbox's best exclusive it has, yes a racer. Congratulations.
That is absolutely crazy that Forza pulled that off with only 3 days on the market and only a $100 SKU available!!!
Spider-Man sold 3.3 million units in three days not counting copies that came with the the Spider-Man Pro Bundle.
hey @paris Fact Check the 3 million does count the bundled games. https://amp.usatoday.com/am... 😉
@UCForce “While Sony includes the sales of its $399.99 Spider-Man PlayStation 4 Pro bundle as part of its count of 3.3 million total copies of the game, it did not break out how many of the limited edition consoles were sold. The bundle's more expensive price could push the $198 million figure even higher. ” Come on man. I thought you were better than that. Instead you show no respect and a lack of confidence in the writers that state what i said as truth, instead of twisting and showing a lack of humanity, you could at least acknowledge you were wrong and wanting to show these journalist disrespect to the utmost degree and call their writings lies 😉😉
Not so crazy considering its the first decent xbone exclusive in quite a while now, it was inevitable tbh. The fact that this is the 3rd horizon game this gen speaks volumes lol.
@ kribwalker "The 3.3 million figure does not factor in sales of Sony’s limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro bundle that includes an “Amazing Red” console and DualShock 4 controller in addition to a copy of the game for $399.99." https://gematsu.com/2018/09... Marvel’s Spider-Man for PlayStation 4 sold 3.3 million units worldwide in its first three days of release (from September 7 to 9), and has topped the record previously set by God of War earlier this year as the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive title, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced. One million copies of the game were pre-ordered, which is another record for Sony. The 3.3 million figure does not factor in sales of Sony’s limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro bundle that includes an “Amazing Red” console and DualShock 4 controller in addition to a copy of the game for $399.99.
@paris The source of your article, is the article i posted. Which has this disclaimer at the top “Corrections & Clarifications: An earlier version of this story misstated Stephen Turvey's title. The story also includes more explanation of what products were included in its sales figures. ” and then states it includes bundles. obviously your link was not updated 😉 My link “Originally Published 6:00 a.m. PDT Sep. 20, 2018 Updated 1:20 p.m. PDT Sep. 20, 2018” Your story based off of my link by Sal Romano at 09:54 AM EDT, September 20, 2018. Posted before the update of the source 😉
Too bad Xbox sucks
"The NPD Group’s latest report on U.S. game sales covers the period from September 2 to October 6." Forza Horizon launched on October 2, it had full representation of all boxed SKU's.
Yes...for 5 days though haha...thats not a months worth...
@timotim "Yes...for 5 days though haha...thats not a months worth..." it's already October. FH4 is not gonna chart any higher than this month comes next time because CoD BO4 & RDR2 will dominate October and I think Spider-man and the likes of AC Odyssey still have some steam from release while we almost don't hear anything about FH4 anymore since its launch.
Seriously did they change the article because that is not in the article I just read. "The following statistics highlight the commercial performance of video game hardware and software purchased either at retail or via an online sale over a four-week period Sept. 1 – Sept. 30."
@DerekTweed This article is wrong... it's "Twinfinite" do you think they did any research... Assassins Creed Odyssey is on the list it released October 5'th... It's September 2'nd to October 6'th, the first week with a Saturday to the last week with a Sunday.
"The Xbox One X System 1TB Black is the best-selling Xbox One hardware item of the year in both dollars and units sold” Among Xbox its the best because better hardware , that's surprising lmao! and not among other Consoles Lol! Oct. Red dead 2 Will dominate along with COD
You honestly sound upset the X is doing well the pro is only 20% of ps4s sold so better hardware don't always equal best sells.
@chiefJohn117 But every month more Pro's are sold than X's due to the fact that PS4 is selling 3x as many consoles...
Chiefjohn So 20% of 83 00 000 = 16 600 000 if that is the case then, lmao, that is still far more than the total number of xbox one x sales, which in reality is the case, in any case. Percentages. Learn em.
Even AC Ody released in Oct but its 3rd. Congratulations Ubi. AC odyssey is an amazing game .
can’t wait to try that one as well. I can’t decide if i’ll play this one or spider-man first, probably spider-man as i usually get AC games for christmas, but odyssey looks amazing
@Kirbwalker Assassins creed is a much bigger game than Spider-man, like double or triple the length. Both are good games but I like Assassin's Creed Odyssey more.
Oh I was expecting it to be #1 but now I see why it wasn't. Release too late.
I don't know why your down voting @Kribwalker b/c he's 100% correct when he says "Xbox gamers willing to pay a premium for a better console" Of the minority of console gamers who decide to purchase an Xbox One…they are absolutely choosing the Xbox One X over any other sku
the S plays almost everything on the market at their lowest as it's too weak. it's a 900p console in 2018. it's only worth it if you fancy some BC games because it still runs them pretty good compared to the 360 but that's about it or as a 4K bluray player. not even Digital Foundry is willing to sugarcoat its performance with vague terms anymore. they just call it for whatever it is now. CoD BO4 on that thing can reach down to almost 720p. yikes!
Ikr mind blowing stats Too many fanboys on n4g damn do everything have to be a D* measuring contest? Like congrats and move to on. UCForce who TF care if Forza is 1st or not. Damn you got nothing better to do with your life than try to troll and buzz kill? Look at the excuses on why Forza did so well they said the same ish about sea of thieves lol I even said they were gonna reuse that excuse later in the year smh predictable. Come with something new that excuse is played out y'all
I don't get why your so angry, who cares if Spider-Man sold more in 3 days than Forza Horizon probably will the rest of the year. But don't worry Microsoft will tell you more cars crashed through walls in Forza than in Spider-Man and you can brag about that.
Great spot for Dragon Quest XI. Lets hope this motivated Square Enix.
Had SE put a little more thought into its release date, it could have done so much better. It would have been a perfect summer game.
Spiderman deserves it. Such a solid game.
Why are the breakdowns show August when the reports are about September? Typo!
A little weird I thought too. Has to be a typo. Since the Heading title has it correct.
Stevie Wonder even saw this coming miles away! Congrats Sony & Insomniac!!
have mercy for the blind guy, dude.
I have Divinity 2 to finish and then DQ to start. Afterwards though I have Spider-Man next in my Gamefly que.
Good, it definitely deserves it!
Dammit I still haven't bought this such a big backlog. Good to see another home run from Sony
Spider-Man absolutely rocked it. Already beat it and ready to play the DLC with new game plus. Going though Horizon Zero Dawn as part of my backlog first.
Spiderman killed it, Insomniac did a fantastic job there is room for improvement but they delivered a solid game. Congratulations Insomniac, Sony and Marvel.
From Resetera: September NPD PS4: ~425K NSW: ~260K XB1: ~175K This year PS4 beat Xbox One 9/9 months in US. This year Xbox One beat PS4 0/9 months in US. Since Xbox One X launch, Xbox One beat PS4 in US only once, in December 2017.
