Switch vs PS4 vs Xbox One Global Lifetime Sales – September 2018

During the month of September 2018, the PlayStation 4 outsold the Switch by 324,076 units for the month and the Xbox One by 698,347 units. The Switch outsold the Xbox One by 374,271 units.

When you compare monthly sales to a year ago, all three consoles are down. The Nintendo Switch is down 122,638 units, the PlayStation 4 is down 358,457 units and the Xbox One is down 56,955 units

Taking a look at the marketshare, the PlayStation 4 managed to achieve 50 percent. The Switch accounted for 34 percent of the consoles sold, and the Xbox One 16 percent.

And yet another month rolls in where PS4 outsells xbox 3:1. It's been like this nearly every month for 3 years. And Switch has more than doubled xbox sales every month for over a year. Even I thought the X would have more of an impact that it did.

Games and price sell consoles, not specs alone.

Gamers will always pick a cheaper console with lots of exclusives over a much more expensive console with better graphics but very little exclusives to offer.

PS4 and Switch beat the X1X comfortably in that regards.

The Xbox one is a failure and the Xbox one x is a bigger failure. I remember a lot of fanboys saying that Xbox one x will constantly outsell ps4 worldwide and Xbox one sales will catch up to the ps4s overall sales worldwide. Delusional

Edit: I wouldn't call it a failure, but MS have failed its fans, yet they don't seem to accept it.

The PS3 launch was much worse than the X1, the price alone. However Sony turned it around, not with BC or point scoring, or beefed up hardware. But with price and games.

Nintendo messed up with the wiiu (over priced and lacked a steady supply of games both 1st and 3rd) they learned quickly, the price is at a sweet spot that makes it tempting as a 2nd console , and it has a great library of games.

Agreed Writer. Not a failure in the sense that it is making MS a lot of $$ but a failure to really provide the same amount of compelling games that made 360 much more of a success. And using BC to basically bring those same experiences forward doesn't count.

The system itself is sound but the management of the platform is not.

39M after 5 years is kinda low for Xbox One. I'm honestly not convinced that's right. I would expect 43M-45M.

Regardless, Switch is doing great. I expect a pretty good comeuppance for Nintendo when Smash Ultimate drops. Definitely the Christmas gift that'll keep giving.

And this is only a year after Xbox shot its load with the X. I suspect it will be a while before they'll have anything but price reduction to get people excited. On the PS side there are still some major exclusives coming, and maybe even a PS5 announcement next year. By the time XB2 or whatever comes out, these numbers could be a lot worse

The Switch may not have the grunt of the X1X or even the original PS4.

But it has games that are different enough from what you get on the other 2 to justify itself imo.

I wasn't sold on the idea, but took a punt at the start of the year, it probably gets 1/3 of the gaming time my PS4 does, yet I don't regret getting one.
