Bethesda Looking into ‘Fallout 76’ Crossplay: “It’s Not Just Flicking a Switch”

Crossplay won't be coming to 'Fallout 76' at launch due to the complexity of it, but Bethesda is looking at it "as an option post-launch."

They call Sony for not having it, were never going to add it, used Sony as an excuse now they are saying the exact same line Sony recently said about why they didn’t implement it sooner.

That is f***** hilarious

Spurg10d ago

Sony were late to the party so crossplay wasn't an option for Fallout 76. Bethesda have already stated that they are will do it in due time but if Sony had yeilded much sooner then it would have been a feature at launch.

Nyxus10d ago

That's not what they said last month:

"Fallout 76 does not support crossplay, for a number of reasons. I have no idea if it ever will."

MasterCornholio10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

It could have been a feature at launch for the other platforms. So no Sony didn’t stop them from giving the PC and X1 versions of the game crossplay.

Truth is it was never going to be a feature at launch. And like Pete Hines said it may never will be a feature I’m the future.

DigitalRaptor9d ago

Sony doesn't mandate third-party publishers to not build cross-play into platforms like Xbox and PC though.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

There was nothing stopping them from doing it anway with PC, Xbox and add it later for PS4 if sony gave in...stop making excuses for bethesda.

Bethesda also refutes your own post.

From Pete Hines' Twitter. The same thread which your quote also came from:

"if we had never considered it we would have just said "we're not doing it, we're not considering it" and that would have been the end of it."

"we're 7 weeks from launch...."

and regarding why not just do it with just PC and Xbox since some people here are so fixated with that question:

"because it was a thing that, if we do it, we're doing for all platforms or not at all. and since "all" wasn't an option based on what we knew, we focused on other things."

Make of it what you will. But at least do some research. It was literally in the same thread y'all were pulling that tweet from lmao.

Edit: Maybe it's because I don't give a shit? Am I supposed to feel bad for a console maker that was too stubborn to admit a policy change was in the works and instead dished out mediocre PR that just made their case worse while also locking out people's 3rd party accounts (including mine)?

Case is, they never said it was never gonna happen, and people went willy nilly with that narrative. I'm simply just pointing out how more of it was addressed and people chose to ignore it.

Nyxus9d ago

@ Doge: if you can't see the difference in tone before and after Sony allowed cross-play, I don't know what else I can say.

Why didn't BGS push forward with cross-play for XBox and PC then? It is apparent that BGS was being the good little boy for MS and doing their bidding. Although it may be true that it takes some time to implement and maybe can't be enabled for launch day. Still, BGS has done themselves no favors. If anything they have engendered ill will from many. BGS looked like a child having a temper tantrum. They should have just said they were hopeful and encourage Sony to enable cross-platform play.

Hines was all about how Sony was the reason there was no cross play. Said specifically they were the only hold up. After Sony looked to be implementing it, Hines simply said that it wasn't coming to FO76, didn't know if it would, and instead of having a specific reason, cited "a number of reasons".

Notice the difference between Sony specifically and then some vague unspecified reasons?

Just because he decided to clarify after a bunch of backlash doesn't change the fact that he singled out Sony, only to not be able to do that anymore.

Couple that with his frequent assertions on just how important cross play is, and now he's saying that it isn't as simple as it seems, he just comes across as an oppurtunist doing whatever he can to get his name and the game out there in the press. He was hoping it would help give him a good perception among those who like to flaunt how pro-consumer they are, and Sony pulled the rug out from under him.

Sony is a hardware manufacturer. Ultimately they have to approve it to begin with. Bethesda can't just force cross play if Sony isn't willing to allow it.

As a result they couldn't exactly plan crossplay into a game that has never supported it.

I mean really?

-Foxtrot10d ago

They'd have had no bother leaving Sony out and just do crossplay for the PC and Xbox One but no no somehow big bad Sony stopped them from doing that to a rival console...makes literally no sense.

Neonridr9d ago

@Foxtrot - I mean no Fallout game has ever had crossplay to begin with, so no surprise it was something that wasn't on their radar. I don't disagree with what you say there, but maybe Bethesda figured it wasn't worth it unless they could do it with whoever they wanted.

I dunno. Time will tell I guess.

rainslacker8d ago

I think people understand that. Which is why many other games aren't getting this kind of attention for not having it at launch.

The reason this is such a funny topic now is because of Bethesda's Pete Hines own comments about cross-play...namely his disdain towards Sony over it, and then his original comment after Sony went into Beta about how it may never happen, instead of being positive that it would come one day....which would have pretty much removed any and all criticism about it going forward.

Ausbo9d ago

The game went through full development with the assumption being crossplay was blocked. You can’t expect them to implement it immediately.

These things require bethesda having talks with Microsoft and Sony to get it done.

-Foxtrot9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

"The game went through full development with the assumption being crossplay was blocked"

Let me fix this for you

"The game went through full development with the assumption being crossplay ON A SONY PLATFORM was blocked"

They still had the Xbox and PC...there's no reason for a company banging on about it, wanting crossplay so much that they needed Sony's apporval to do crossplay for the Xbox and PC. Oh wait...they wouldn't have, they'd have done it but clearly crossplay was never on their radar despite how much they made out months ago it was.

One minute

"Well we would have done it but Sony isn't being as helpful"

"Well...urm...we we're never going to add it, it wasn't on our radar at all"

Going by what Bethesda has been saying the past year, Xbox and PC crossplay should have came at launch with PS4 crossplay coming later since Sony just announced it.

rainslacker8d ago

LOL. not just flicking a switch. Hell, I argued that for a couple years with some people, and they vehemently disagreed with me.

Implementing it is easy enough, and turning it on and off is easy enough. I never argued that it wasn't.

But yeah, it's not just flicking a switch, because Sony has to open it up for everyone, and not just fortnite. But Bethesda just needs to shut up about this. They are spinning back and forth without even knowing where to stop now on this issue.

Just say you're going to implement it as soon as possible, and leave it at that. People don't need or often understand any kind of explanation. Stop trying to make it into something political.

Bethesda are starting to sound like Microsoft with all the DRM and restrictions from the Xbox One reveal lol.

All these companies using the “It’s not just flicking a switch” line now

Eonjay9d ago

Yet Epic said they changed one line of code and it accidentally worked lol.

I always find the Rocket League devs quite hilarious. They stated numerous times that it would be as easy as pushing a button to get crossplay on all platforms, so they encouraged everyone to moan at Sony. Then, once it's done, they now come out and say it's not that easy and it will take a long time to get it to work.

Outside_ofthe_Box9d ago

"Then, once it's done, they now come out and say it's not that easy and it will take a long time to get it to work"

Link? Because that would be way worse than what bethesda has done if true

GamePitt8d ago

this is what they said a few weeks back when asked about it just after Sony allowed Fortnite:

"We are looking into it. Not as easy to implement that some might think."

Yet in June last year it was supposedly "just a press of a button away from being turned on":

The full quote was:

"He added, “It’s literally something we could do with a push of a button, metaphorically. In reality, it’s a web page with a checkbox on it. All we have to do is check that box and it would be up and running in less than an hour all over the world. That’s all we need to do.”"

So yeah, the rocket league guys were one of the first people who sided with MS to get their fanbase to push Sony to allow it with false information and exaggerated expectations. Yet nobody seems to have picked up on this...

rainslacker8d ago

He was coming at it from the standpoint of having an implementation ready. Apparently Bethesda doesn't have such a thing, despite the fact that I can't think of any big reason why it should be hard to write a function which allows it.

Obviously, testing would take some time....and of course, there is no say yet on when Sony will roll this out for every dev since it's in beta with only one game right now.

Outside_ofthe_Box8d ago

Damn wow. From pushing a button to not so easy to implement.

they could have had cross-play ready and just left PlayStation out seeing how much press it was getting for Fortnite. speaks of incompetence on Bethesda's part...

but, it's hard to tell if he's telling the truth, seeing the misinformation they spread about mods on PlayStation...

EmperorDalek9d ago

So long as it does get added to the game, that's fine. It makes sense that they wouldn't have been preparing cross-play if they didn't think it could happen. But after being one of the big supporters of the feature... Bethesda really needs to make it happen.
